Travelling People / Re: HARRIS, SHERRATT, East Anglia
« on: Thursday 16 April 09 16:55 BST (UK)  »
Sharon, that's great news  :)
I was helped out by some members of the RTFHS at their stand at a SOG fair some years ago, I will probably join now I've finally got round to attempting my mum's side of the family.

Ron,

Sorry I didn't make myself clear, there's no problem with Sylvia/Sylvester Sherratt (nee Harris)'s birth cert (St Ives, Cambs 1904)

Its interesting to hear that Synfie is 'Cynthia' on the index, as I was christened 'Cynthia' and my mum called me Cindy saying its the 'official shortening' of Cynthia and that it was 'originally Synfie' as she remembered older relatives called that.

The Sylvester/Sylvia/Sylve I was looking for is Sylvia's mum, Sylvia Harris, nee Thorpe.  as in:
1881
10 Tommy Field, Oldham, Lancashire
James Thorpe. head,  30, b Kings Lynn, Cambridge,
Eliza Thorpe, 26, as above
Children: James,  6 yrs, King Lynn, Cambridge, Eliza, 4, b Halifax, York, Silvester, 3, Bradford, York, Mark, 2, Bradford, Cambridge,(?), Edmund,  7 months    Huddersfield, York,

I think someone said they had a possible for Edmund, (back in this thread, somewhere!) but I can't see any for Sylvia, or any of the other children.

Any ideas or parish record entries?  I don't seem to be getting anywhere.

Thanks
Cindy

Hi again!

I've been in contact with a cousin, who has done alot of work on the Sherratt line and she has them now back to Simeon Sherratt who married Ann - early 1800's.  She has contacted me this morning to say that indeed there is Simeon's family on the Sherratt site, but without the info about John, (due to him having gone off to become a traveller I assume), which she said she hadn't spotted there previously.

She has now e-mailed re: Simeon, so you'll be hearing from her shortly.

Thanks again Whogan    :)

Hi everyone,

I just thought I'd check on the post I started, phew!  I'm still wading through it, all very confusing.

I was wondering if any of the people who have alot on the Thorpes/Gray/Harris etc have written it all down for publication in places like the Romany and Traveller fhs (presuming they are still going?)  as I'm sure many of us would find this very valuable.

Also, I'm finding it hard to locate a birth certificate for my G. Grandmother Sylvia Harris/Thorpe.  (daughter of James and Eliza Thorpe) Apparantly family members tried to get a copy when she needed to claim her pension and they were told that there was no record.    I can't find one on Freebmd and there is very little obvious evidence of her or her siblings.    So I assume James and Eliza Thorpe didn't get them registered?

So, everyone getting the info from the IGI?  I have tried but can't seem to locate the info.
Or is it from Parish records from other sources?

I thought fellow researchers might be interested in the 1911 entries that I've transcribed for Harris and Thorpe
But having read the copyright stuff I wasn't sure if I'm allowed to post my own transcription, like you can with other census's.  Can anyone enlighten me?

thanks for that, I think I have already contacted that site and there was no connection (at least back to 1880's), but maybe it may be of use to other Sherratt researchers.

Thank you Falkryn and Wildgoose

I thought there must be some obvious explanation.

I'll have a look at posting the section in question tomorrow, (and thanks Wildgoose, re: pm,  will do  :)   )

Scotland / Poor quality Marriage entry help needed!
« on: Monday 04 August 08 19:01 BST (UK)  »
Hello all,

I downloaded a marriage cert some years ago from Scotlands people and it was very difficult to make out, not only quality wise, but the registrar seemed to have squashed a whole essay into the gaps!

Over the years with much squinting I have made out most of it, but am still struggling with the Bride's information section.  Thanks to a contact from a fellow researcher on Genes R  it is even more important that I work it out (due to some discrepancies in her surname).

I'm presuming I can't post the image here?  And as I haven't been on the SP website recently I don't know what its like with regards to sending people images.

Can anyone let me know if theres anyway of letting those of you with more experience have a look at it?

If not, this is what I have so far:

(Signed) Mary Middleton,
(next line I can't make out)
It seems to say 'witness' then a name, Andrew ?  Why on earth would there be 'witness' in this section I've never seen that before??
Third line seems to say 'witness' again, then 'cotton'  then something I can't make out.  Very odd
Then finally 'spinster'

The box above of the groom is much more as usual:

Signed  John Hunt,
Lathsplitter (apprentice)
Batchelor.

The marriage took place 9th August 1878 in Hutcheonston (Glasgow) Lanark

Is there some standard stuff that might be in that box that would explain the 'witness bit?  Or am I getting this completely wrong.

Aaarggh!

Any ideas would be gratefully received.

Lancashire / Re: Taylor, Henry from Whiston, bit of a challenge! Help needed
« on: Friday 25 July 08 11:48 BST (UK)  »
Thanks Emms!
and Hi Mia!

I've also made contact with another 'Taylor' line researcher, thanks to someone who put me in contact via this board.  Funny how I've not found anyone else researching this line for years and then 2 come along within a couple of weeks!  lol!

Mia, although its been frustrating, at least if you too have been struggling too it shows that I haven't just been missing something obvious.
I got the birth cert recently and I think this may be it, but it also (as ever) brings up new questions.

Henry Molyneux was born to Rachel in January 1853, unfortunately not only is there no father listed, but there is no clue under 'informant' as it is just Rachel herself.   Henry was born in Prescot at a pub called the 'Bird in Hand'. (also known at the Bird I'th Hand'.

From the St Helens Connect web site (which is brilliant if your ancestors were born near or in ST Helens in Lancashire) I have been told that people did rent rooms out at pubs and there is also a picture of how it looked back then.  Very different to if you look at it on Google maps etc now.

Rachel was a 'servant' in an earlier census, so its possible that she was working at the pub then.  Of course she may just have been renting or even staying there.

This of course leads to the dilemma of knowing what to do now, I would still like to follow the 'taylor' line, especially as Henry names himself Taylor for ever after.  Was William really his dad?  If Henry went on to call his oldest son 'William' maybe he was?? Or at least Henry was bought up by him and called him dad.  Was Rachel's grandfather a 'Licensed Victualler' and did this mean he had some link to the pub?  More research to do....  :)

Its ok, i'm just thinking out loud, lol!  I don't need answers to the above, I'll look into it.

But I do have just a quick question anyone, how do you know if Henry was really a 'Taylor' would he have changed his name officially so that he could use this name on his marriage cert?   Or did he just think he was a 'Taylor' as his mum was married to William Taylor and no-one checked/his mum never told him?  I thought if you changed your name it would be noted later on the birth cert or am I wrong on this?

Mia, please e-mail/pm me and we can compare notes.  My husband's G Grandfather is George Taylor, one of William Henry Taylor's younger brothers.  George remained in St Helens, (until WW1)  but one of his grandchildren moved out to Australia where one branch of the family still live!  The rest of them remained in England.

Thanks to Marilyn and Carol for their comments, I'll bear them in mind.  (still searching btw).

Sandy, yup, you've spotted my post on the traveller board,   :)  its given me a huge amount to digest about the Harris family and associated (Thorpe Gray etc) but it seems no-one has anything on Sherratt.

But if anyone is linked to 'traveller' Harris's etc, do have a look.
(Walter Sherratt married Sylvester Harris)

Ah well, I'll keep trying...

Hi Emms,

Thanks for your reply.

Well I've tried the Knowsley Reg office (they also deal with Prescot and Whiston)  and hurrah!  They have a Henry Molyneux with Rachel as a mother born 1853.

I have my fingers crossed that this time my £7 will be spent on the right one!!

I'm still going to contact Liverpool Reg office and get on of the siblings as well.

 :)
