World War Two / Re: military pic, Australian/NZ? looks WW2?, person unknown :-(
« on: Tuesday 10 October 17 14:37 BST (UK)  »
Thank you Sarah, I was a bit at a loss where to put it.  :)

Thank you Frank, that is a great help (and nice clean up too, Peter :-D )
I haven't had any pics like this in my own research, (only WW1) so that is very helpful.
I was trying to look very carefully at the uniform, but does seem to be lacking any insignia, so that makes it harder.  You have just confirmed my fears on that one.

But if it is UK and probably Royal Artillery, then at least that's a start and I know it was found in S Staffordshire, so if he was in that area (or Midlands generally) that might help with a possible regiment.  If he was from elsewhere, then no hope really.

But this was a long shot, so thank you again.
So, if anyone is familiar with the area and Royal Artillery and can shed any light on this, I would be most grateful.

Cheers

Cindy

I've got one of those 'oh I know who does FH and I wonder if they can help' questions that I like getting from friends, but I felt my heart sink on this one.

Basically it's your typical 'that's a nice frame' purchase from a charity shop.  It had a 1980's faded picture of a woman.  (very like a Kylie type picture, big permed hair)

Ok, so far, so what..... Well when my friend took this photo out a much older picture was revealed.
Now I guess the original person who gave it away had either forgotten, or never knew about this second picture.  It would be nice to try and at least find out the regiment and then for me to post it to the appropriate message board so that maybe someone might find it, if they are interested.

It's such a shame when this happens.

If I'm not in the right place, please let me know.  Any ideas about the correct country this chap was in the military and the approx. year, would be fantastic.

Thank you

(PS not attached a photo to Rootschat for years, so I hope this works!)

Hi,   I don't know if they are connected, but there were many Grays around the East Midlands/Lincolnshire/Cambridgeshire.  Have a look at the thread on Thomas Gray

http://www.rootschat.com/forum/index.php/topic,221158.0.html

if you haven't spotted the thread already... (my ancestors settled round Boston, Lincs)

I'm not actively researching at the moment, but if you can get back another generation/find them in the census you might find this helps you.  If you haven't got access to any subscription site, try 1881 census on the Family Search site and check to see if your local library has Ancestry for free (they don't often advertise the fact).  But get their marriage certificate first.  I hth, but if you already know all this stuff, please ignore!

Good luck

Had forgotten all about this post!

Thanks,  :)  How did you manage that?
If I remember rightly squinting, comparing letters,  turning it upside down, all the usual tricks, just gave me a headache!  ;)  at least I got 102 right!

Unless they've improved the quality of the scan greatly since I got the download some years ago.

You must be very dedicated to go back to answer this, cheers!

Thanks Cath,

That is useful,   :)I'll remember that for next time.  Pity they don't let you keep previous sheets you've viewed like other sites do (once you log out).

Thank you Nick

Have spent a productive hour at the library looking at the enumerator books,  :)

I haven't really been doing any research for the last year or so, which is why I didn't realise.

looks like I'll be down the library again tomorrow, but this time with my notes!  will make it more even more productive I hope!

I found Bensons field and indeed there are at least 2 more families I recognise.  So I'll be getting the full sheets on Findmypast now  ;D

Thank you, yes although 'next residence' is useful, it's not much use if you're on pay per view and they 'helpfully' delete your previous paid for sheets each time you log out.  So I'd have to pay again just to start from my ancestors sheet.   :(

And even if you are subscribed if you can't find them on the person search, the address search is the way I'd find groups of travellers in other census.  (on Ancestry, etc), I was just wondering if thre was a way of doing that with the 1911.

Thanks Nick, I haven't been on ancestry for some time.  I didn't know about the 1911 enumerator books, time I booked a session at the library I think.... unless anyone else has found a way?

Cheers

Travelling People / 1911 address search tips
« on: Thursday 06 January 11 01:16 GMT (UK)  »
Hello all and a Happy New year.

sorry if this is a bit basic, but have been using the 'bit cheaper' 1911 census search on findmypast (up to Jan 9th)  and have picked up the odd ancestor I missed on my last trip to NA.

Thing is, I like looking on the other census's at the 'others' around my ancestors.  Sometimes it's just the one caravan, but often its a group of vans at a public house, or even better, a whole field.  I love the way that often there's other family members in other vans and with the occupations a real feel of a fair etc.

1911, is not so easy as you see only one family per sheet.  So been doing address searches to at least try and pick up other travellers round my ancestors.  But am failing miserably.  'Caravan' doesn't work, nor other variants.  I thought 'Benson's field' might come up with something, but no good.

I found one lot through Newmarket Rd, Cambridge, and the schedule number, but it wasn't obvious what other ones might be neighbouring travellers on that road.

So, any tips on finding travellers on the the address search on the 1911?
much appreciated,
Cindy
