Stirlingshire / Robert Penman / Jean Muirhead
« on: Tuesday 03 February 09 17:44 GMT (UK)  »

Robert Penman and Jean Muirhead married in the parish of Airth in 1767. All seven children were born over the next 14 years - and baptised at Airth. The last? - Michael - was baptised in 1781.

I'm looking for a record of the burial / monumental inscription or/to Robert.

Can anyone help at all, please?

Stirlingshire / Logie - which county?
« on: Saturday 31 January 09 12:39 GMT (UK)  »
My gggg  grandparents were married in Logie, Perthshire in 1777 (per OPR ) - William Hogg and Margaret Anderson.  Their son John was baptised in Larbert, Stirlingshire one year later.  His two younger brothers were baptised in Larbert as well.

Is this Logie parish the one just north of Stirling?  From reading Genuki some parishes including Logie belonged administratively to one county but were actually surrounded by a totally different one.

Stirlingshire / Logie - Which county?
« on: Saturday 31 January 09 12:27 GMT (UK)  »
My relatives were married at Logie, Perthshire in 1777 - William Hogg and Margaret Anderson.  Their first child John was baptised one year later in the parish of Larbert, Stirlingshire - as were his two younger brothers.

The basic question is, please, how far is Logie, Perthshire from Larbert, Stirlingshire?
I think  :D this is to do with some parishes at some time belonging to one county but in fact being within the boundaries of another.  (This per Genuki).

If I am right  :)  then Logie parish is just to the north of Stirling and Larbert is about 12 miles away to the south.

But is there not a Logie in Fife?

« on: Saturday 20 December 08 13:23 GMT (UK)  »
Good afternoon all.

The Dumfries & Galloway Standard of the 1850s has these references to  William Chalmers, Miller:-
14th April 1852  Page 4 Col G
6th April 1853    Page 4 Col G
16th July 1856  Page 4  Col G
1st July 1857    Page 4  Col G

Is it possible to summarise / detail the contents, please?  Is Page 4 Column G the Births, Marriages and Deaths column?

Clackmannanshire / William Penman - Clackmannan
« on: Tuesday 11 November 08 19:13 GMT (UK)  »
My direct relative William Penman was son of Michael Penman and Mary Bauchop (various spellings :)).  An IGI extracted baptism shows him to have been baptised  in Clackmannan in 1820 and in the 1851 Census he was 31. He went on to marry Janet Syme/Sim in 1852 - and as they say the rest is history  :)

When researching a little while ago I realised that William had had an elder brother called William - who I presumed had died and thus my William was given the same name.

However earlier today I discovered that the older William - baptised six years earlier in 1814 - was still alive when my William was baptised.

Has anybody come across this?  I've been at this game for some time but it is a first for me.   The only thing that occurs to me is that the older one was expected to die in 1820 - but didn't, of course.

The older one marred an Elizabeth Bernard in 1844. I believe that they had two children Michael and Jean Hunter before 1851.   Again IGI provides extracted entries.   I believe I have found the children in 1851 with their grandparents at Vennel - is that correct? - in Clackmannan.   But I cannot find their parents.

In any MI inscriptions for the area could someone check if they died beween 1847 when Jean was born and say 1851, please?

Roxburghshire / Thomas Laidlaw
« on: Thursday 02 October 08 21:45 BST (UK)  »
Thomas Laidlaw died in 1823 (5th September) - according to his testament.
He was of Nether Cassock, parish of Eskdalemuir.  However I have quite a bit of material about Eskdalemuir, Ewes, Westerkirk, Langholm and Hutton but cannot find a memorial for him.

I know that his only son was Robert and that he Robert was at Nether Cassock in 1841.  He was with his wife Jean (ms Beattie) and two of his children (probably) Mary and John.  Robert was born 1798/99 and Jean in 1804/1805.

I am more interested at the moment in indentifying more about Thomas's family and wondered if, for example, he had been buried in the parish of Hawick.  I do know there was a Laidlaw family at Falnash, then in Hawick parish.

The first person at Nether Cassock in 1841 was a Mrs.  T  Laidlaw, aged 65 and Independent and born in Dumfriesshire.

Can anybody help, please?

Are the Great Budworth  BTs on the Family Search Pilot site, please - and if so what are the years from/to?.   I'd like to advise accurately someone I'm helping.
Sadly, I cannot access this site, because according to the site owners, the 'new' version has not been tested for a Linux operating system.

Midlothian / John and Charlotte Caird
« on: Monday 02 June 08 21:22 BST (UK)  »
This is a subsidiary question following a topic with the heading Dr. Caird - Surgeon which I began on the Scotland - General board,

John Caird. Surgeon  died at 27, Montague St., Edinburgh on 9th October 1861. His wife Charlotte predeceased him dying on the 29th March 1860 at the same address.  I have looked at the Scotsman looking for an obituary for either or both of them but without luck - I was a little surprised in his case.  Are there any other Edinburgh newspapers worth checking?

Also; Charlotte was buried in Grange Cemetery.  Are the memorials in this cemetery recorded and if so where should I look please?
