Isle of Man / Charlotte Averne / Averane / Avarne
« on: Friday 30 May 08 15:26 BST (UK)  »
From the IGI, there is an extracted marriage for a John Caird and a Charlotte Avarane on 3rd December 1803 in the parish of Onchan.

This is my first posting on the IOM board and I know very little about the Island.

My next knowledge of her is in Edinburgh in 1841 when she and John Caird, a surgeon,  are living there. Charlotte was aged 55 in 1841 (65 in 1851) giving a calculated birth year of 1785/86.

Is anybody else related to Charlotte and/or John and perhaps could fill in the gap between 1803 and 1841, please?

This is a follow up to a topic I started on the Scotland board with the title
Dr. Caird - Surgeon.

Lancashire / R B Beattie, Burnley
« on: Sunday 25 May 08 16:29 BST (UK)  »
R B Beattie was an Electric Light and Power Contractor at 1A St. James Street, Burnley and also Hall Street, Burnley.   Time about 1917.

If possible I would like to know please if he was there before that date and if so when.  I could't find Burnley on the Historical Directories website.   No need to look before 1900 I'm pretty sure.  He was born in the 1870s.

Any help will be much appreciated

Scotland / Dr. Caird - Surgeon
« on: Saturday 03 May 08 18:00 BST (UK)  »
May I ask for some advice and, if appropriate, a look-up please?

Dr Caird - I do not know his first name - was born up to 12 years either side of his sister who was born in 1765.  Is there a medical directory(ies) or lists of graduates which may give his name, please?  I believe he would have graduated in Scotland.  Presumably I'm looking for graduation between 1773 and 1797.

Is anything available on the net?

I live in Cheshire

Northumberland / Obtaining a Will
« on: Friday 25 April 08 11:35 BST (UK)  »
Hello all

I have been given the following details from a Will Index.

1867-11-30      559     ROBSON  Riddell Whorlton        Newburn 1867-04-26      £12,000 Esquire

I thought I had found where it came from on the net but could't for some reason get further into the site.

Can anyone tell me how I go about getting a copy of the Will, please?  I have got Wills in the past from the Probate Registry at York but I don't think that is the place.

Stirlingshire / Penman / Muirhead
« on: Wednesday 12 March 08 16:14 GMT (UK)  »
I have been reading the Penman / Izate topic on the Perth board and because I am researching PENMAN too but starting in Stirlingshire I thought I'd start mine on this board  :)

Michael PENMAN married Mary BAUCHOP in Clackmannan but he was baptised in the parish of Airth, Stirlingshire on 27th May 1781.  His parents were Robert PENMAN and Jean MUIRHEAD.  On 27th January 1767 the Airth register baldly states that 'Robert Penman and Jean Muirhead were married'.

Using the IGI, their childrens names were:-
Janet, Agnes, Catharine, Ann, Elizabeth and two Michaels.
All of them were submitted except the last - my - Michael (1781).  All including this Michael were baptised at Airth.  The first Michael was baptised in the yaer 1777 in Clackmannan.  I have not yet tried to confirm whether any'all of them are in the OPR.

Again using the IGI there appear to be six possible sets of parents for Robert - based on whether he was 15 or up to 38 years of age when he married Jean MUIRHEAD.   Some may be more or less likely because of where he (Robert) was married.   For example, one marriage was in Roxburghshire.  But still . . . .

On the Perman/Izats topic already referred to I see a couple of those parents referred to as having a son Robert.  I must study those in more detail together with trying to find the children of the other four potential parents of Robert.

In the meanwhile any details or thoughts that may occur to those reading this posting will be very much appreciated.  If you can add anything regarding Mary BAUCHOP and Jean MUIRHEAD, that too would be helpful.

I may have something useful for Penmans who haven't got back as far as the above.  Michael PENMAN and Mary BAUCHOP had several children one of whom was William who married Janet SIM / SYME (Innverkeithing, Fife).

Their daughter married Charles HOGG at Bothkennar, Stirling in 1878.  They are buried at Plean.

Stirlingshire / James White, Soldier, 1799
« on: Friday 25 January 08 18:39 GMT (UK)  »
I have a soldier named James White who married May Wood at Stirling in 1799 - per OPR.

He was according to the register a Sergeant in the 7th Regiment of Foot.

He possibly had a daughter born in 1799 and a son born in 1814 (Baptism at Falkirk).
Note the word possibly.

Is there anything to suggest Jame's likely age if he had attained the rank of Sergeant?.  Were the 7th Regiment of Foot at Stirling Castle?

Any thoughts and advice would be appreciated.

Perthshire / John Syme(s) - died Perth 1826/1827
« on: Tuesday 08 January 08 15:47 GMT (UK)  »
When his daughter Janet was baptised at St. Paul's, Perth on 16th February 1827,  John SYME Vintner was described as the deceased husband of Janet MacFARLANE.  That seems to give a fairly limited period when he died. :)

John and Janet married at Logierait in 1805 and had at least eight children before Janet, the first in 1806.

Is this anybody else's family?

Is there a likely burial ground?  If so. have the MIs been published and able to be looked up or purchased, please?

Northumberland / Riddell ROBSON - Builder - 1783-1867
« on: Wednesday 19 December 07 14:59 GMT (UK)  »
May I seek some help/advice, please?

Riddell Robson was a builder in Newcastle in the early 1800s.  Info. from directories and on'line archives.  In 1823 he went to a performance of Tom&Jerry at the Theatre Royal, Necastle, a fire broke out and in the crush his wife died in his arms. I am pretty certain that he is indeed a relative but I'm not sufficiently sure.

My Riddell was baptised in 1783 in Newburn parish and I believe died in 1874 at Whorlton in the same Parish.on 24th June 1867 where the occupation on his DC was 'Landed Proprietor'. I thought the National Burial Index on Findmypast might add additional names but it didn't.

I think I have two children of his  - one also Riddell -  born between 1816 and 1822 but I'm not sure.  His wife's name is also proving eluaive - at least  I cannot find it via the IGI.

Any help would be appreciated.

Northumberland Lookup Requests / Selby Robson, baptised Stamfordham 1754
« on: Wednesday 05 December 07 13:10 GMT (UK)  »
The IGi has an extrscted entry from the Stamfordham Baptism register.
The name is Selby Robson baptised on 21st April 1754.

Could somebody check this particular entry plese?   Does it say where William, Selby's father. was from?   I would like it to say William Robson of Ingoe - but  of course it may not  :)

I am thinking of purchasing the NDFHS Index anyway but wondered whether it gave the full details of the entry(ies).
