Hello Glensman

Thank you for your reply.  That is the correct couple you found, Jane Orr being in my family tree.   The name of Choughan remains a mystery so far.

Armagh / Armagh Registry Office

Hello there

I have found an ancestor who married at the Register Office, Armagh, in Dec. 1858.  Does anyone know if this would have been a normal occurrence for Ireland in 1858?  All the marriages I have found so far in my family research have taken place in a church.  The bridegroom in this instance was a widower by the name of Choughan or Chaughan.  I have not been able to find any trace of this name in the censuses etc. despite looking at variants of the name.  Has anyone ever heard of this name before?

Many thanks for any help

Regards
Carol

Hello Aghadowey

Thanks for your message.  Yes, the person you found named Withers was my grandfather.  I note the query has now been moved to the correct place.

Thanks

Antrim / Finaghy in 1950
« on: Wednesday 10 December 14 10:01 GMT (UK)  »

Hello there

I am trying to find out who lived at 2 Ormonde Avenue, Finaghy, in 1949/1950.  This is the address where my grandfather died in 1950 but I've always believed his home was in the Cliftonville Road area of Belfast, as this is where his wife died in 1968.  I'm wondering if the Finaghy address was maybe that of a family relative as I have heard the place name of Finaghy mentioned in the family.  If anyone has a street directory for Finaghy in 1949 to 1950 I wondered if it would be possible for them to do a look up for the name of the family at 2 Ormonde Avenue at that time.  It would fill a gap in my family research.

Many thanks for any help

Antrim Completed Look up Requests / Re: Belfast Mental Hospital

Hello Jolene

The only information I received about my ancestor who died at the Mental Hospital in 1938 was sent to me in a private message by a Rootschat member who had seen my original query and who was also a descendant of the same person.  I did not obtain any records etc from the hospital as I am not a direct next of kin and did not think they would provide me with anything.  I did look at the online links but couldn't get into the 'irishgenealogy.net' one.  Sorry not to be of more help.

Hello Blue

That's interesting about Henry Corbett originating in Malta - it's probably unlikely he will be related to any of the Corbetts I've come across in my family but, you never know..  He is quite a football fan

Hello Blue

I was very interested to receive the information you sent about Arkwright Street.  It would seem the houses my ancestors lived at will not be there now.  Places do change over time but it was kind of you to send the photo of the street which gives a good idea of what it looked like and to explain about the sectarian 'divide'.  It's a shame that the old St Peters Everton was also demolished.  I looked at the link for the new church.  I'm amazed at the coincidence of the Corbett name with the church and that a Jane Corbett is Education Chief of Liverpool!  I noticed from the news article that she is the wife of the Rev Henry Corbett of St Peters.  It's all quite a coincidence ...perhaps there's a link somewhere. I think Corbett is a Scottish/N. Irish name originally.  I have found quite a few Corbett people in my family tree - be great to find a link with Henry but it's a bit of a long shot I suppose.

I am extremely grateful to you for all the helpful information you've sent in response to my original query, together with maps and photos, which make family history research so much more interesting.  I shall definitely be visiting Liverpool again in this regard.  (the last time I was there was to see the regenerated White Star Line offices into a hotel, which was very impressive)

Many thanks again
Carol
