London & Middlesex Completed Lookup Requests / Re: Harris Family 41,51,61 & 71
« on: Sunday 31 December 06 21:37 GMT (UK)  »
Hi Carol80

One of my main lines is also Harris (but from devon) and I know how hard that surname is.
May I ask how you know Mary Ann's parents names?
I have had a search but also can not find anything useful to you, I only find one Mary Ann Harris that was born in Pimilco, Middlesex in the 1851 census and the 1861 census, I will give you the details - just in case.

Cornwall Completed Lookup Requests / Re: Nicholas DUNSTAN 1841 census help please
« on: Sunday 31 December 06 06:18 GMT (UK)  »
Hi Heather
We are related if you go all the way back to the 16th Century.
3 brothers David, Richard and Martin Martin, Your discendants come down the David Martin line (1598-1666/7) and mine come down his brothers line Martin Martin.
I heard about this book about 2 years ago, it has neally every Martin from Stithians in it as well as their partners and children.
I was very lucky to find it in a second hand book shop in some village in England, I saw a list of their books on the internet and sent away for it, it cost me $100 but I would of paid $1000. It is very hard to find as it is not in print anymore.
It also has alot of information about stithians and the important families.
One paragraph which you might be interested in is -

'Several other families hovered on the edge of gentry status, e.g. the Baths from about 1630, the Martins from about 1690 and the Dunstons also from about 1690'.

At the begining of the year (2006) I went to Stithians in Cornwall and I purchased a series of books on its history and what life was like, they are very interesting, they tell you all about the conditions of the mines etc what they ate and mentions lots of names and families - I will get them out and have alook through for the Dunston name.

I do have another Dunston in my tree, John Dunston married Grace Elizabeth Martin in Willunga, SA June 1878.
By the way where in Australia are you, I live in Brisbane
Have a very happy New year.
Megan

The Common Room / Re: Wrong Information
« on: Friday 29 December 06 08:36 GMT (UK)  »
I felt better after having my say - but sad to know that there are so many others out there with the same problem.
But reality is that there is nothing we can do, if people wish to publish on the internet what ever they perceive to be the truth without having facts to back it up they can do it.
My hope is that generation's to come have the sense not to believe everything on the internet (like so many people today) and research  for themselves.
I know for a fact that if they ever come across my family tree published (if I ever get there) it will only have information that can be referenced and if there is a family story  among  the fact it will clearly say that this is only word of month and can not be backed up by references.
My best Xmas present was discovering Rootschat and I get to enjoy it all year round - Have a great New Year everyone.

The Common Room / Wrong Information
« on: Friday 29 December 06 03:12 GMT (UK)  »
Why do people put information on the internet when they can't reference it?
I have come across my family lines in a variety of websites that are just so so wrong.
When I have emailed them with a nice email saying that some of the information is incorrect and I was more than willing to send them copies of BMD certificates etc to back it up I get no answer and the information remains there forever!!! for all the next generations to mix it all up even more.
For example in one tree that is on the internet my great great grandmother is attached to parents(the wrong ones) that had a child with the same name as her in the same year, but their child died when she was only 5 months old - so anyone researching that family will attach my family to their tree if they want to save themselves some work - and don't kid yourself there are plenty of people out there trying to save themselves from doing the hard work and spending the time and money in getting it right.

I needed to have a vent - Thank you for listening

England / Re: John Petherick Harris
« on: Thursday 28 December 06 21:34 GMT (UK)  »
Hi, Yes I know a great deal about JPH  - I live in Australia but I did a family History trip to England at the beginning of this year and was able to gather a fair bit of information on him including finding his grave and the streets he lived in both in Manchester and Shaldon.  Unfortunately the Archives in Devon where shut for stocktake while I was there (I was able to have one day there before they shut) and I wanted to get the newspapers to see if his funeral was in the papers.  I am planning another trip there in Oct 07, I wish it could be earlier but my other half is insisting on doing a holiday that has nothing to do with research and family - so in two weeks Iam off to America where i have not one single line to trace there - What am I going to do!!
Anyway thank you for you help
Megan
