Armed Forces / Army Marriage
« on: Wednesday 06 December 06 21:10 GMT (UK)  »
Hi, Sorry second message today - I was also wondering how I would find a marriage in the army for John Petherick Harris born 1830 denbury Devon.
Family story is that he was married to a Spanish lady. In the 1851 census he was single but when he married for the second time in 1868 on his certificate he was a widow.  I have not found a marriage for him in England but I know he spent nearly 5 years in Gilbrator, So is their anyway to search Gilbrator BMD? Or would the army have the records?
Thanks again

Armed Forces / Discharge by purchase
« on: Wednesday 06 December 06 21:03 GMT (UK)  »
Hi - GGGrandfather, John Petherick Harris joined the coldstream guards and went to the Crimean war, he spent abt 5 years with the guards but then he applied for discharge by purchase and paid 20 pounds to leave in Feb 1858.
He then joined the Royal Fusiliers in November 1858.
Is the answer why he did this as simple as he did not like the Coldstream Guards? It was such alot of money back then to pay to get out of the army just to rejoin again and the Harris family had no money they were all servants.
Does anyone else have any other ideas, I know I will never know the right answer but I would be interested in knowing a few other reasons why he might of done this.
Thank you

Completed Census Requests / Help needed 1901 census
« on: Wednesday 06 December 06 01:24 GMT (UK)  »
Hi, I am looking for Samuel William Frederick Thompson, born 12 march 1895, aldershot, Hampshire, father - Samuel Thompson and mother Emily wishall.
Samuel senior was a laborer. (all off his birth certificate)
The story goes that Samuel WF Thompson's parents died when he was a young child and he went into a Bernardo's home for boys in London and then he was brought out to Australia where he changed his name to William Frederick Samuel Thompson.
On his ww1 military record - he joined the army in Qld, Australia but his next of kin was his stepbrother Herbert Smith living in surrey england. It also stated that he had done a 5 year apprentice as a wheelwright with Dr Bernardo's homes, London.
I can't find any Emily Wishall  born or married in England and I can't find deaths for Samuel and Emily that fit.
And I can't find any of them on the 1901 census.
He come out to Australia before 1916, but was in england long enough to do a 5 year apprentership.
Any help would be great before I go crazy
Thank you
Megan
