Wiltshire / Re: LAWRENCE family of farmers in Hilmarton, Wilts
« on: Wednesday 27 March 13 19:30 GMT (UK)  »
Hi Fourth Cousin, Simon,

I am delighted to hear from you.  I just sent off a reply to you, but there was some pesky error and it looks like that message disappeared into cyberspace.  Pity!  So, here we go again.

My great great great grandfather was William Lawrence (1767 - 1834), who married Mary Wilkins (1776 - 1847);  they farmed in Hilmarton, Wilts.  So, that makes us fourth cousins, possibly once or twice removed.  I am descended from their second child, James Lawrence, who farmed in Idstone Farm, in the parish of Ashbury, Berks, now Oxon.  You are descended from their third child, Sarah Lawrence, who married John Freegard;  they farmed in Bradenstoke Abbey Farm, in the parish of Lyneham, Wilts.

I have quite a lot of research accumulated on our shared ancestral Lawrence, Wilkins and Freegard families, and some of our laterals, descended therefrom.  If you are interested, I would love to share family history notes with you.  My e-address is:

In the mean time, here are some of my notes about your Lawrence / Freegard / Iles ancestors:

iii)   Sarah Lawrence, daughter of William Lawrence, yeoman, and Mary, was born in Hilmarton and baptized there on March 20th., 1814.  On April 15th., 1833, in Ashbury, Sarah 19, of Idstone, married her first cousin, John Freegard, of Bradenstoke Abbey (source, Wiltshire Marriage Licence Bonds).  John had been baptized in Bremhill on April 9th., 1805;  John was a yeoman farmer in Bradenstoke Abbey, in the parish of Lyneham, Wilts;  in the 1851 and 1861 censuses, John was described as a farmer of 420 acres at Bradenstoke Abbey.  John 66 died on March 31st., 1871 and was buried in Hilmarton on April 6th..  In the 1871 census, Sarah 57 widow was a farmer of 362 acres in Bradenstoke Abbey;  in the 1881 census, Sarah 67 was enumerated in Surrey, at 2 Addlestone Place, Chertsey.  Sarah 77 died on November 26th., 1891 in Addlestone, Surrey.  John and Sarah had issue, including:

(e)   Elizabeth Freegard, daughter of John and Sarah Freegard, yeoman of Bradenstoke, born in 1838 / 39, baptized in Lyneham, Wilts, on January 14th., 1839.  On April 21st., 1864, in Lyneham church, Elizabeth married William Iles (BMD ref:  Cricklade 5a / 41).  William had been born about 1836 in Wapley, Glos, and was baptized there on December 26th., 1836, the oldest son of Richard Iles and Sarah Wilkins, his wife.  In the 1881 census for Dauntsey, Wilts, William 44 was a farmer of 160 acres in Lower Idover Farm, living with Elizabeth 40 and children;  in the 1891 census, William 53 was farming Idover Demesne Farm in Dauntsey.  Elizabeth died on August 11th., 1900.  William’s last will was dated August 19th., 1903 and he died on June 22nd., 1906.  William and Elizabeth had issue, all baptized in St. James Church, Dauntsey, Wilts, including:

●   Effie Marjorie Iles, born on February 24th., 1897 in Dauntsey, Wilts, and baptized there on March 28th., 1897;  birth registered in Malmesbury in Q2 of 1897.  On July 27th., 1921, she married William Ferguesson McCulloch.  Iinitially, they lived in Bristol, where Bill was a watch maker and repairer;  later, they moved to Chipping Sodbury.  Effie died on February 24th., 1985.  Bill and Effie had issue, still living.

I hope that you enjoyed that!!  I have much, much more!!

Simon, if you are interested I would love to share Lawrence, Wilkins and Freegard family history notes with you.  I do look forward to hearing back from you.

Best wishes from Toronto, Canada, where we still have some residual snow patches lingering on our lawns.

Hi Victor,

Many thanks for your thoughtfulness and your visiting the Glos records office.  Very much appreciated.  Unfortunately, those offices are just too far away for me to drive to them, from Toronto!!

Best wishes.

Hi Victor,

Thank you very much for your selected Wilkins extracts from the burials register of Alveston parish, Glos.  Bingo!!  It looks like all seven burials records are in my Wilkins family.  Much, very much appreciated and valued!!

If, some time in the future, you do get an opportunity to view the baptisms PR for Alveston, for the period 1789 to about 1811, I would be immensely grateful for a similar extract from that register, of Wilkins baptisms.

Many thanks, once again.  Best wishes.

Gloucestershire / WILKINS Children of John WILKINS in Alveston
« on: Saturday 02 July 11 23:42 BST (UK)  »
I am looking for the children of my John WILKINS senior, probably in Alveston, Glos., after 1788.

On July 14th., 1788, in the church of Clyffe Pypard, Wilts, John WILKINS senior, of Bremhill, Wilts, married Ann CHESTERMAN, "of this parish".   Their first son, John WILKINS junior was born in Clyffe Pypard, Wilts, and bp there on November 2nd., 1788.

After that John senior "vanishes", till 1819, when he is mentioned in the will of his aunt, as John WILKINS, of Alveston, Glos.  Later, John WILKINS junior, with his wife Celia, was farming in Lodge Farm, Alveston, Glos., where he had eight known children born and bp, in the years 1823 to 1838.

I have searched for other children of John WILKINS senior, and Ann CHESTERMAN, his wife, in the PR of Bremhill and of Clyffe Pypard, but in vain.  I now wonder if they had younger children, after 1788, in Alveston, Glos.  Can any kind soul out there please help me in this search?

Best wishes.

Thank you.  Those census details are new to me  -  much appreciated.

I already knew about the three Chamen sons.  I guess that son, John Chamen had been born in Bradford Peverell, shortened to Bradford in the census.

I suspect that that visitor, Elizabeth Stone, was a cousin of that Chamen family and of mine.  I have an Elizabeth Jane Stone, born in Hilfield, Dorset, about 1834.  Her older siblings were born in Hilfield, while her younger siblings were born and baptized in Alton Pancras.  If she was the one enumerated in 1851, in the Chamen household, then she was a first cousin, once removed, to John Chamen the head of the household.

Cheers!

Thank you, Richard,

Would that 1851 census have been for Charminster?

Hi Jebber,

Thank you very much for your carefully thought-out suggestion.

Your Jane Swier is definitely a feasible option.  She would have been about 18 years old at the arrival of her first born, in 1824 / 25.  The fit with the year of birth, implied in the 1841, 1861 and 1871 censuses is less good;  those documents suggest a year of birth of 1800, 1796 and 1800, respectively.  I will keep this on file, for more careful analysis.

Best wishes.

My humble apologies to Richard Knott and to all "Rootschatters".  I had a typo. in my original request, concerning the year of Jane's baptism.  That request should have read:

Can some kind soul please help me find the baptism of my cousin, Jane Charlotte Swyre, CLOSE TO 1800, possibly in Blandford, Dorset.

I am looking solely for her baptismal record.

I do know that my cousin, John Chamen, who was bp. in Godmanstone, in 1798, married a Jane, date and location not known.  They farmed in Charminster, in North Street, where they were recorded in the 1841 census, Jane reporting her birth, in the county of Dorset.  John and Jane Chamen had nine known children, born in Frampton and Charminster, between c1825 and 1839.  John died in 1858 and Jane in 1872, both in Dorchester district.  At the 1861 census, Jane Chamen 59, widow, independent, was a boarder in Islington St. Mary, London, stating she was born in Blandford.  By the 1871 census, Jane Chamen 70 widow, appears in household of her son, Richard T. Chamen, in Charminster, giving her place of birth as Dorset.

I recently received, from overseas Chamen cousins, a Chamen family tree, very old, that states that John Chamen's wife was JANE CHARLOTTE SWYRE.  I have not found any baptism for a Jane Charlotte Swyre, about 1800, in the Dorset OPC, or elsewhere.  The I.G.I. only reports the baptism of a Jane Swyer, in Fordington, in 1790, which is not very helpful.  Can some kind Rootschatter please help me verify if a Jane Charlotte Swyre was born about 1800, possibly near Blandford, Dorset.

Sorry for the inconvenience my typo caused!

Best wishes.

Peter.
