The Common Room / RootsChat publicity
« on: Wednesday 25 February 09 11:10 GMT (UK)  »
I'm not really sure where to post this, but RootsChat was mentioned in April 2009's edition of "PC Advisor" under their Reader's Sites article. Recommended by Falkyrn, it links to the site and has a pretty nice picture to go along with it.

Had to have a smile, especially as I was signed in here while reading it. ;D

Just wondered if there is a list etc of publications that have mentioned RootsChat.

The Common Room / Parish Records Collection 1538-2005 look-up, FindMyPast
« on: Thursday 19 February 09 16:47 GMT (UK)  »
Hi,

Can anyone do a search for me on the Parish Records Collection 1538-2005 part of FindMyPast, provided it's part of a sub. (don't want anyone spending good credits! :))? I'm looking for a John Wale, d. 1972 in Essex. When I do a free search, I get two results ... both part of the Essex Memorial Inscriptions record source.

Thank you,

Essex Lookup Requests / Witham or Chelmsford MIs
« on: Saturday 14 February 09 23:52 GMT (UK)  »
Does anyone know where I could find MI lists or similar for Witham or Chelmsford? Searching for dates around the late 1950s. Afraid visiting the local county office isn't an option just now. :-\

Thanks

The Common Room / Two wives of the same name
« on: Monday 12 January 09 22:43 GMT (UK)  »
Hi everyone. My head is spinning with this problem!

Today I recieved the death certificate of a (married) woman with the forenames Agnes Gillian. Now the woman I was after has a slight variation on the second name, but I accepted errors could have been made and that this was the right person. Now I'm wondering if I'm wrong to assume this! The husband of the woman was married before and his first wife was also named Agnes, but there is no middle name on their marriage entry (at least on Freebmd). There is also no birth of an Agnes Gillian - with the approximate birth year.

Can anyone think of any suggestions that I could look at next to confirm or deny that I have the right certificate???

Northumberland / Taylors of Bedlington
« on: Thursday 08 January 09 11:14 GMT (UK)  »
I'm not too sure where to post this, but hopefully it's alright. :)

I'm looking to find what happened to Florence Rachel Taylor who was born 1897 in Bedlington. She was the daughter of Thomas John Taylor and Hannah Stoker. I have found the family staying at Vulcan Place, Bedlington on the 1901 census.

In 1922, Florence married my 2x great-uncle, Alexander Brown, in Scotland. They moved south again, possibly to the London area but the family is not sure of any children, or when they died.

Hope someone can connect with this info.

Fife / Pre-1855 MI look-up, Dunfermline
« on: Monday 08 December 08 22:15 GMT (UK)  »
Could anyone check for a Henry Philip (and variants; Philp, Philips etc), mason or builder in Dunfermline? Think he died before 1841 as I can't find him on any census. I just have his name from a son's death record.

Thank you

Graveyards and Gravestones / Vandals and gravestones
« on: Tuesday 02 December 08 11:06 GMT (UK)  »
I don't really know where to post this as I know this isn't a query, but I feel I must bring attention to it. :(

In the local newspaper, it was reported that 30 gravestones had been attacked and vandalised on a two night "drunken spree" at our town's graveyard. My 2x great-grandparents and countless other relatives are buried there, including my 2x great-grandmother's step sister. Today I decided to take a look for myself and see if the stones I knew of were okay. I know that sounds as if I worry only about my own, but I do care about other people's families and the hurt this causes. :(

I was shocked and disgusted to find my said great-grandmother's step sister's gravestone knocked down and the grass around it destroyed. A gravestone that has stood for nearly 50 years and not one mark on it a month ago; a gravestone of a person who I have spent months researching and caring about, just wishing to meet them one time.

I'm 18 years old, so I am probably considered the age of those who have done this crime. That does not really make a difference, but I just want to say that not all youths have such a disregard for their ancestors or the memorials that have been erected for them.

I would also like to ask if there is any way I could get the gravestone put back up? I'm afraid the answer will probably be 'no', and to tell my grandparents this will be awful. I'm actually quite scared to see their reaction. I would write into the newspaper but it would probably fall on deaf ears.

Thank you for reading.

Dumfriesshire / Herbertsons of Dalton
« on: Sunday 30 November 08 01:23 GMT (UK)  »
Hello everyone,

I am hoping to find any descendants of this family or anyone who thinks they may have a connection - even if it is rather distant! ;) Information is welcome too, although I do have a small amount of it already.

John Herbertson married Elizabeth Linton on the 6th Apr 1772 at Dalton, Dumfriesshire. Both were of Holmains (which I have since found was owned by the Carruthers family). They had three children I know of:

  • Jannet Herbertson, b. 1773 in Dalton (may have married George Buckham in 1802?)
  • Rachel Herbertson, b. 1777 in Dalton (likely married Robert Somerville in 1804)
  • Thomas Herbertson, b. 1779 in Dalton (married 1st. Isobell Kerr, 2nd. Helen Black) (my own line)

Thomas died in 1865 and was a wright/builder and house proprietor. His father, John, was a farmer, perhaps in Holmains or a smaller dwelling of his own. Can't find any births for Elizabeth, although there is a possible for John Harberson at Dalton in 1727, father Thomas. 45 seems a little late to be married (could suggest Elizabeth was his second wife), so I am unsure whether to go with this one until I have other details to verify.

The Common Room / What information is given on the death certificate?
« on: Tuesday 25 November 08 04:13 GMT (UK)  »
Hi everyone,

I tried doing a search for this myself, but everything I read seemed to deal more with 19th century death certificates rather than the more recent ones.

What information could I expect to find on a 1959 death certificate? I know English certs. don't give parents' names (pity! :() but is there any info on birthplace/birthdate that would help me know if it's the correct person.
