Ireland / Freemans Journal 1820
« on: Saturday 03 May 08 23:29 BST (UK)  »
Hello all

Does anyone have access to the Freemans Journal of 1820.  I found an on line source which I diligently searched, but there are obviously copies missing, as itwas a daily paper, and sometimes a whole week was missing.

I am still looking for that marriage (see my other posts) of Pasley to Palliser/Wilson.

If only I could get their christian (given) names, then I know I am on the right track.

It is so frustrating when the key is just out of reach.

I would really appreciate some help with this.

Dublin / GGGrandmother and Mt Jerome
« on: Wednesday 09 April 08 08:00 BST (UK)  »
Hi to Dublin from Sunny Qld

My GGGrandmother is buried at Mt. Jerome.  There is a little black edged card that found its way to Australia.  I would love to know if she has a headstone, where she is buried, and whether her husband is buried with her,

The card says"In Affectionate Remembrance of Mrs. Katherine Pasley, (Widow of the Late Rev. William Pasley) Who died 28th September 1881, Aged 74 years.  Interred at Mt. Jerome.

Katherine Pasley was nee Wilson, and family history has it that her mother was a member of the nobility (which we take with a grain of salt).

I wondered where her grave might shed some light on her origins.

With thanks

Wexford / GGGrandfather Rev William Pasley

Hullo to Ireland from Sunny Qld

Can anyone help me?  I am trying to find some information on my GG Grandfather, Rev William Pasley.  He married Katherine Wilson, supposed daughter of a countess?

My Great Grandfather was his son,  Robert Pasley who migrated to Australia in 1949.    We know little about William,  but he is mentioned as the father of Elizabeth Long whose daughter Mildred was involved in a "scandal" (the Langworthy affair)  in England in the 1880's.  We have photos of Elizabeth Long, that must have been sent to her brother, Robert.

In the publication, A Romance of the Law Courts,  Elizabeth Long's father is described as Dr Sabine-Pasley, rector of a parish in Wexford.  We know the events and people in the publication were true, although there could be a little literary licence.  Therefore not sure about the Sabine-Pasley bit, might have been a bit of gilding of the lily there.

Robert's brother, Walter, also came to Australia, and they only refound each other shortly before Walter's death because of this publication.  Walter in a letter to Robert in 1885 says "I suppose you never hear of the Wilsons of Wexford - If John Wilson is alive and still at Jigginstown.  I wonder how he acts the Landord - and how does the "Plan of Campaign" affect him.  Well, Well, I thought once I was to marry Fanny Wilson......."

We also know from Walter's letter that they attended the Blue Coat School, probably in Dublin, and that another brother William was a seaman, probably a master, but suffered from eplispy from a blow to the head.

Can anyone help me with information or how I might go about finding out.

With thanks

Australia / Underage marriage and permission
« on: Thursday 13 March 08 21:28 GMT (UK)  »
Hi All

This is a follow on to my other thread on Edward Cullen (Intruiging Puzzle etc).  I have a copy of a marriage certificate that was issued to other researchers in 1988.  Edward Cullen was 20 years old, based on his death certificate which stated he was married at 20, and his supposed d of b, and his wife Jane was probably about 16.

The certificate that I have does not show who gave permission for the marriage.  I am trying to find his parentage and this may be important.

The details are:  Edward Cullen m Jane Harrision, St. Mathews Roman Catholic Church,  8 August 1853.  Witnesses James Harrison and Bridget Bullock.

Does anyone have access to church records that might show the names of those who gave permission.

With thanks

Australia / Intruiging puzzle - unknown mother
« on: Thursday 28 February 08 02:17 GMT (UK)  »
Hullo Rootschatters

I thought I would put this one in for your collective wisdom to work on.

I have Edward Cullen born 1833.  I don't know the date as there is no BMD
record.  However, there is a baptismal record, which another researcher got from St Marys Cathedral, Sydney.  I have not yet seen it, but I am told it says Father James Cullen, convict, mother unknown.

Edward's DC (3/5/1901) has Father James Cullen Stonemason, mother not known.  Born Sydney NSW.

I can understand that a father is not known, but a mother?  Someone gave birth to him and that raises the question of who reared him.  I have not found any records of entry to an orphanage.

The Col. Sec. Index 1788-1825 has Sept 8 1821 James Cullen Stonemason On list of all persons victualled from H.M. Magazines.

There is a list of convicts who were working on St James Church and the Court House on September 8, 1821 and James Cullen appears under Ambrose Bryan's gang of Stonemason.  But neither of those entries state which ship he came on.

So who was James Cullen? and who was the mother of his child, Edward?

Where else can I look?  Any help or suggestions, gratefully received.

Australia / James Cullen - Convict?
« on: Sunday 02 December 07 21:51 GMT (UK)  »
I am trying to find a James Cullen whose son Edward was born in about 1833 in Sydney and baptised at St. Mary's.
Edward married Jane Harrison at St. Mary's RC Church Windsor in 1853.

Edward Cullen's DC gives his father's name as James, unknown mother.  Father's occupation Stonemason.

There are some who believe he was the son of Thomas Cullen and Mary Ann Alcorn, but there appears to be no evidence to support this.

Can anyone point me in the right direction.

Thanks

Australia / Look up Church records

Hi Everyone,

I have not been able to find a birth for Henry William Johnston born 14 May 1831 and christened 10 September 1831 at St. Johns, Parramatta.  (This information supplied by elderly family member.)

Is anyone able to do a look up at St. Johns to ascertain his parents?  Henry William married Sarah Ann Smith daughter of Maria Smith of Granny Smith apple fame in 1849.  I have just had this information confirmed by the Local Historian at Ryde Library, where a member of the family, and researcher had left family information.

The family oral history has it that a Johnston was involved in the "Rum rebellion" (not the well known George Johnston).  So Henry William is a bit of a stumbling block at the moment.

Australia / Help with death - STAFFORD
« on: Wednesday 24 October 07 06:07 BST (UK)  »
Mary Kelly married Frank (actually Francis Gustave) Stafford 11 Dec. 1877 aged 21 in Sydney.

She gives her mother's name as Julia Condy and her father as John Kelly.  There is a birth for Mary Kelly in 1858 with parents John Kelly and Julia Connolly.  A brother William was 15 months old.

Francis Stafford died in 1904.

There were at least two John and Julia Kellys having children in the Sydney area at about the same time.  I cannot find a death for Mary Stafford nee Kelly to be certain that the Mary Kelly who married Francis Stafford is the person born in 1858.

Can anyone help?

Annette
