Australia / William Hawker on convict ship Adelaide 1849
« on: Monday 05 March 18 20:44 GMT (UK)  »
I have found William Hawker, who was convicted of sheep stealing at Castle Morton in 1847, and transported for 10 years. He was on the convict ship Adelaide arriving in Australia in 1849 and I wondered what happened to him.

Can anyone help me please?

Warwickshire / Samuel & Phoebe Hawker had 15 children but I only found 7!
« on: Sunday 14 January 18 12:37 GMT (UK)  »
On the 1911 Census I have only just noticed that Samuel and Phoebe Hawker had 15 children but only 7 were alive at that time. I have only found 7 confirmed children on my family tree. How do I discover the "lost" ones? FreeBMD has lots of possibles. There used to be a way on family search to find children with just father's name.

Can anyone help please.

Warwickshire / Blitz: the bombs that changed Britain BBC2
« on: Friday 08 December 17 08:21 GMT (UK)  »
Has anyone else been watching this fascinating programme?

Last week letters were shown written by Hull schoolchildren at the time and used for a particular wartime survey.

It was mentioned that Birmingham schoolchildren were also asked to write about the bombing for the same project. Where would these letters be stored and would there be a bomb map for Birmingham as there was for Hull?

« on: Thursday 30 November 17 18:06 GMT (UK)  »
According to Solihull Updates on social media a shoebox of photos, of an unknown family, has been handed into a charity shop. I don't know how to copy it to this site/thread but I thought someone might be able to identify the origin of these "lost memories ".

If you Google Solihull Updates the photos are shown

« on: Saturday 04 November 17 18:53 GMT (UK)  »
A dear friend of 87 years was evacuated to A-de-la-Zouch c1942 and was placed at a home where the son of the family (British Army in South East Asia) was possibly a prisoner of war of the Japanese. How do I found out for him what may have happened to the son?

Warwickshire / Marriage of James Hawker to Ann Preece St. Martins, Birmingham.
« on: Sunday 08 October 17 12:26 BST (UK)  »
On 11th May 1807 apparently James Hawker married Ann Preece at St. Martin, Birmingham.

Can I apply for a marriage certificate for this from Birmingham Registry office direct please? Will it give details of parents and witnesses?

Currently getting a little bit confused with these ancestors of my husband!

Thank you.

The Lighter Side / WDYTYA Exhibition NEC, Birmingham, 6-8 April 2017
« on: Sunday 05 February 17 09:18 GMT (UK)  »
I have been asked to accompany a friend to this event. Does anyone have a full list of exhibitors as I searched and found no mention of Scotland, Staffordshire, Nottinghamshire, Rutland and Birmingham History Societies. I imagine the stand rental must be very expensive.

The Lighter Side / Genes Reunited 50% Off?
« on: Thursday 29 December 16 14:12 GMT (UK)  »
This advert appeared out of the blue at the top of my Council Recylcing page! I was trying to find out what to do with my used Christmas wrapping paper.

By quoting AW2016 apparently there's 50% off GR subscription until 31 December.

Can anyone actually tell me how much it will cost now and for how long? Also which subscription are they talking about? Standard or Platinum?

Thank you.

The Lighter Side / Origins of Christian names
« on: Friday 14 October 16 13:05 BST (UK)  »
Hello

I am sure this topic has been covered elsewhere but I have a question.

I have quite a number of ancestors in the Victorian era who were called "Bertha! Where does this name originate from? Obviously Victoria and Albert were popular at that time too.

Who has been named after a film star or other famous personality? I know that lots of us have been named after an ancestor. I have a spate of Elijahs and Enochs in Staffordshire c1800s. Why was this?

I was christened "Judith" c1945 but don't know why. It doesn't feature at all in my family.

Any interesting comments from fellow Rootschatters requested please?
