Worcestershire / Harriett Kate Hawker
« on: Thursday 07 July 16 22:10 BST (UK)  »
I have posted many threads on here before today with amazing information supplied by wonderful rootschatters. One of them concerned the possibility of a Hawker family member owning a boat building business on the River Avon at Eckington, c1950s/1960s.

Using my £1 month subscription to FindMyPast I found Harriett Kate Hawker, youngest sister of Alfred Theodore Hawker, my husband's grandfather. She married a Levi Sanders and their son, James Levi Sanders born 1912 was a boatyard proprietor of Pershore, Worcestershire.

Is this the missing link I was looking for? Can anyone throw any light on James Levi Sanders' early life?

Any nuggets of data would be happily received.

I've just had an email from FindMyPast stating that there is currently free access to all Irish Records on their site from 1st till 7th March.

I haven't yet tried it out but, keeping fingers crossed, I might find something new.

Staffordshire / Joseph Parton miner/artist Chase Terrace late 1800s/early 1900s
« on: Sunday 07 February 16 16:01 GMT (UK)  »
The above miner apparently painted many pictures and gave several away to friends; also selling others from a little shop on the crossroads at Chase Terrace near Cannock. Scenes of Cannock Chase with stags featured among the studies.

Today I reunited a couple of these paintings with the family. Are there any others out there?

I was remembering the Pitmen Painters from the north-east. Not an unexpected pastime for folk who worked underground for most of the day.

The Common Room / Happy Ending re Parton Paintings: Thanks so much to ROOTSCHAT.
« on: Sunday 07 February 16 15:42 GMT (UK)  »
Hi all at Rootschat.

There should be a link here to "What is the one thing you wished you had etc......." thread but I don't know how to join them.

Today I had the great pleasure of handing over the two small oil paintings signed "J. Parton" to two of his descendants (delightful people). There is a story to be told here but even now we don't have the whole story yet.

It goes without saying that without Rootschat and its readers and contributors this might never have happened.

It just proves that miracles do happen. I hope my mother's wedding photo might turn up one day.

I will add a new thread on the Staffordshire board.

So happy.

Thanks again.

Worcestershire / Castlemorton Headstone
« on: Thursday 01 October 15 08:07 BST (UK)  »
Researching my OHs ancestor William Hawker who supposedly married Hannah Ball c1783 at St. Gregorys Church, Castlemorton, we visited the spot yesterday. An old headstone near the church door mentioned a Mary Hawker and a William Hawker of a slightly later generation. It was difficult to read because of ivy and wear and tear. However, I was intrigued by a carving of a large star on the top of the headstone. Does this mean that the family were Jewish by any chance?

Warwickshire / Miss Hawker - Suffragette?
« on: Saturday 14 March 15 07:53 GMT (UK)  »
During a recent programme about the early Suffragette Movement I noticed the name of a "Miss Hawker" on a list of attendees at a Birmingham meeting. It was only on screen for a fleeting second so I wondered who this would have been.

Can anyone help with this? Having found that our Hawkers prior to this period were of rather dubious character, I'd love to find out if this lady could redeem our family history.  ;)

The Common Room / Up-to-date Electoral Register Information
« on: Friday 27 February 15 16:19 GMT (UK)  »
We are registered on the Electoral Register for the forthcoming Election as are the majority of the population. Why, when we have opted out of the Open Register for many years, does our  full information and that of many friends and relatives show up on websites such as 192.com and Find My Past? How can we prevent this information being displayed on their websites?

Just do a check yourselves if you don't believe me.

After contacting our local council electoral office they said that credit reference agencies can apply for our information, even though we've opted out, if we had taken out a loan or mortgage. We've done neither of these two things for over 50 years!

Am I missing something?
