guess we have taken up enough space on this one I hope to get to Havering show if I can persuade hubby to stop building conservatory long enough!

thanks for keeping looking think James first wedding must have been around 1840-43 as 1st child on 1861 was born around 1843
James would have been about 20 by 1840 as

1861 says 43  born west ham
1871 says  51 born Boreham
1881 says 60 born Essex
1891 says 74 born Boreham

all the children seem to have been born West ham or Stratford which I believe are very close so seems likely these areas mind you he married his 2nd wife in City of London even though she came from Essex
Oh well!
by the way forgot to say I love your website had that in my favourites before I came on here.  well thats the grovelling done sandie

I am hoping someone might be able to help me with my grandmother and her mother
Frances Louisa Lewis born 29/06/1888 in Union workhouse wotton /within  no father Mother Mary elisabeth Lewis a domestic servant of Barton St Mary.
apart form knowing Frances went to India and married a soldier Charles Dowell.
, I can find no trace of her or her mother I am hoping someone might be able to help.
I am hoping to go to the record office sometime to see if they have any workhouse records but if anyone could help I cannot find them on the 1891 census or 1901

Hi Kevan,

yes the 1861 is definately the right family, the jane age 1mth is Rons  g Gran I have her Birth certificate

31st March 1861 Jane Elizabeth Digby Chapel Street Stratford Essex.

The Beer & Butchers shop would tie in with him being a master butcher then a Licensed Vitualer.

I have managed to find that the grandaughter Louisa Morgan on the 1881 is Hannahs daughter thanks to your 1861 info.
