Yorkshire (North Riding) / Arnett of Easingwold
« on: Wednesday 15 March 17 16:16 GMT (UK)  »
I am tracing the ancestry of George Arnett born 1802 who was a printer and stationer in Newcastle and Easingwold. Please could someone tell me the exact wording of the following entry in The Easingwold Parish Register

Sibella daur of George and Ann Arnett, printer, baptised 18 August 1833

Perhaps I have already found the exact wording but I,d like to make sure I have not missed any info.

Also does anyone have details of a marriage between George and Ann ?

Many thanks.

Occupation Interests / Border shepherds in North of Scotland
« on: Sunday 06 November 16 19:55 GMT (UK)  »
Can anyone direct me to sources of information about the Border shepherds who left their homes in Northumberland, Roxburghshire  etc to work in Sutherland and Caithness after the Highland Clearances in late 18 and early 19c? How were they recruited? How did they travel up there? Did many return to their native counties?

I would appreciate help with this.

Sutherland / Turnbulls in Sutherland
« on: Sunday 30 October 16 21:28 GMT (UK)  »
I am looking for William Turnbull married to Eleanor Robson who went from the Borders as a Shepherd to Sutherland ( Farr and Clyne) about 1800  - 1810. By 1841 he was back in Northumberland with some of his children. I would like to know which farms he worked on in Sutherland. He may be related to John Turnbull who was shepherd at Suisgill. Any ideas on where to look?

FH Documents and Artefacts / Intestate - what exactly does it mean?
« on: Wednesday 10 August 16 16:27 BST (UK)  »
Can anyone tell me why someone would be described as dying intestate by the Probate Office when they did in fact make a will which was deposited with a solicitor? In this case someone died in 1970's and left everything incl property to his widow, but had no savings or assets of his own, would it be necessary to apply for probate? Or would everything go automatically to his widow? The property was jointly owned by the couple and mortgaged at the time.

Would be grateful for any explanations.

Northumberland / Where was Bitchwood Hall near Kyloe?
« on: Wednesday 10 August 16 16:17 BST (UK)  »
I have just transcribed a will from a possible Ancestor and one of the witnesses lived at Bitchwood Hall. I live in the area but nobody seems to have heard of it. Eventually I located it to an area west of Kyloe Church using Armstorng,s map of 1769. But I would like to know more precisely where it was and when it was demolished.

Please can anyone with local knowledge help?

I don,t usually get much response to my queries on Rootschat. They must be too obscure!  But I think Rootschat is a fantastic resource and live in hope!

Northumberland / Similar to love spoon?
« on: Monday 23 May 16 00:27 BST (UK)  »
Has anyone heard of a small hand carved wooden object said to be hung outside on the door of a newly-wed couple? On entering the house for the first time as a married couple, they would carry it into the house and hang it on the wall or by the fireside. A member of our Family History Group brought one to show us. It was simply made, like a miniature shovel with a heart at the top and the initials of one of the couple.

Was this a Northumbrian or Border custom and does it have a name? Has anyone else seen one? I would love to know more about these.

For Sale / Wanted / Events / BERWICK UPON TWEED FAMILY HISTORY DAY SAT 16 APRIL
« on: Saturday 19 March 16 20:55 GMT (UK)  »
Berwick Record Office is holding a free Family History Day at the Guildhall in main street on Sat 16 April. Groups from both sides of the border will have displays and books on sale and will be able to help you with queries. There will also be talks on different aspects of family history and the local area. Come and see the work done by volunteers on the recent Berwick Families Project. Can you help us extend the Burgon Family Tree? It has grown considerably since we have invited people to link their family to it!

Hope to see you there!
