Northumberland Lookup Requests / Keen Or Beal
« on: Thursday 27 August 20 12:24 BST (UK)  »
I have been searching for many years for the Baptism and parentage of MARGARET KEEN born About 1788 at Beal, opposite Holy Island and near Ancroft and Berwick. She married Cuthbert Elliott (date and place unknown) and they lived initially in the parish of Lucker and later Cheswick in the parish of Ancroft where she is buried in 1864. There is someone of the right name and year of birth baptised further south at Lesbury but that is not mine.
Can anyone help? There were several people at Beal called Keen, descendants of Joseph Keen and Eleanor Duncan but no one who had a daughter baptised Margaret then.  She consistently names Beal as her birthplace on the census.

One Name Studies: A to G / GLASS in Scottish Borders
« on: Wednesday 28 August 19 20:10 BST (UK)  »
I am researching the surname GLASS and its origins. My own GLASS ancestors lived in North Northumberland from mid 1700s. My grandfather told me that our GLASS ancestors came down to the Borders from Ross and Cromarty. I have found many of the name on the English side of the border in North Northumberland but few on the Scottish side. The surname is more common in Central Scotland and the Highlands although the earliest occurrence is usually quoted as in Bute on west coast.

The fact that it is more common on the English side of the border than the Scottish leads me to think the story of them coming to North Northumberland from further afield rather than gradually drifting southwards over the border may be true. Can anyone confirm this? And was there any historical reason for their migration south from Ross and Cromarty in the 17/18 century?

Australia / Donkin family from Northumberland - did they go to Australia?
« on: Wednesday 21 August 19 21:50 BST (UK)  »
I’m looking for John b1844 & Isabella Donkin b1837 (sometimes written as Duncan) & two children John b1869 & Jamesb1871 who may have left England for Australia between 1877 & 1881. No trace of them in UK after 1877 before which they had a small farm in North Northumberland.

*Were there particular areas of Australia attracting emigrants from Northumberland during that period?
* What is the best way to find out which port they sailed from and port of disembarkation?
* Is it necessary to search individual states for census, bids, etc or can it be done at a national level?
* can all the relevant databases be searched online?

This is the first occasion  I have had to use Australian records so I would appreciate some guidance!

Thank you.

Suffolk / Drowned mariner- how can I find out more?
« on: Tuesday 02 April 19 21:52 BST (UK)  »
My 2x grt grandfather James Mallett born at Blakeney 1830 went to sea in 1846/7 and settled in BLYTH, Northumberland where he married and raised a family of four. Whilst on a voyage on board the snow " James and Eleanor" taking coal from BLYTH to Honfleur he fell overboard during a storm near Southwold and was drowned on Nov 24 1864.

If his body was washed ashore, how could I find out where it is buried? Can anyone with local knowledge suggest where it would be likely to come ashore? Which registers should I search?  Even an entry of "unknown sailor" in a burial register might give me a clue. Another sailor, much younger than James, was washed overboard at the same time.

I will be grateful for any suggestions.

Technical Help / Creating Tree on Ancestry.co.uk
« on: Monday 18 February 19 17:23 GMT (UK)  »
Can anyone tell me if it is possible to create a tree of  separate families whom you believe to be connected but have not yet worked out how they aRe connected? If so, how? I would like to use it as a sort of "work in progress" in the hope that I can eventually discover the connection. But it seems only to allow chains of interrelated people.

Northumberland Lookup Requests / LESBURY- where is Link End?
« on: Sunday 10 February 19 20:24 GMT (UK)  »
I am hoping that someone who is familiar with the village of Lesbury can tell me where exactly Link End is? My 5 X great grandfather is recorded as living there at the time of his daughter Ann's baptism in 1781. Is the name Link End still in use today?

Unravelling all the Thompson families in Lesbury and Warkworth is quite a challenge......I am wondering if anyone has ever listed all the Thompson lines?

Occupation Interests / Travelling Teachers for Farmers' children in 18/19c
« on: Saturday 02 February 19 22:41 GMT (UK)  »
Some time ago I read an article referring to education of children living on isolated hill farm steadings in The Scottish Borders. A "Dominie" or master would spend a few weeks at each farm teaching children from one or more families the move on to another. He had free board and lodgings during his stay. This was before free education. There was a special term in use for this custom/ profession which I have now forgotten. It sounded archaic, almost Old English, and of course is no longer used. I would love to remember the word! Can anyone enlighten me?

Northumberland / Addison and Allison of Hauxley
« on: Saturday 02 February 19 22:23 GMT (UK)  »
My ancestors of this name lived in Hauxley during 17- and 1800s. In the events registered at Warkworth Parish Church the surname for most individuals varies between Addison and Allison throughout their lives. Is there an explanation for this? Letter D and letter L sound quite different so it doesn,t seem to be a spelling variation. What do you think and does this happen with these names in other parts of the country?

Northumberland / FRANCES HUDSON of Felton and Lesbury
« on: Thursday 31 January 19 17:38 GMT (UK)  »
I,m tracing my maternal line and keen to know how I became K1c2mitochondrial haplogroup through these women. I harbour a wish to find out whether they had Scandinavian ancestry. Yes, I know it is most unlikely I will ever find out but visions of Viking women who settled here spur me on!

The furthest back I have got is my 5x great grandmother Frances Hudson who settled on the coast at Lesbury, Northumberland after marrying Robert Thompson in 1776 at Lesbury. Sadly she died in 1781 but not before giving birth to my 4x great grandmother Ann Thompson. Thank goodness or I would not be here to write this! I believe Frances was born and baptised at nearby Felton in 1755with her father recorded as Henry Hudson. There is a child of that name baptised at Felton in 1722 but I cannot find his marriage. I need to find out the  name of the mother of Frances in order to progress with my maternal line.

Can any kind soul offer any suggestions? I have looked at transcribed records from Felton and confirmed  dates above on Bishops Transcripts but have not had the opportunity to look at original Felton Parish registers or microfilm. Any help will be much appreciated.

Thank you.
