Occupation Interests / Interesting Occupation listed - 1871
« on: Sunday 25 September 05 18:21 BST (UK)  »
I found this occupation listed while checking for other ancestors.  What I found interesting was not the job, but the way it was listed.  It is for a 31 year old man in Arlecdon in the 1871 UK census.  His birthplace is listed looks like Carnarvon; Bangor.

Under occupation it says, "Member Royal College of Surgeons, England; Liceniate of Apothecaries, Hull, London; Practicing Surgeon"

Like anyone, I'm not sure I'd want a surgeon who is only practicing.  RedFox

Devon / William LEMING/Leman & Ann BURDEN
« on: Wednesday 22 June 05 22:16 BST (UK)  »
William was born about 1816.  He married Ann Burden 12 Nov 1837.  She brought two older boys to the marriage.  William and Ann had two children Jane (b.1841) and John B. (b.1844).   Jane married Richard Bawden Dawe after the 1861 census.  He is my ancestor.

The birthplaces for William are different for several census records -  Taunton and Souton in the earlier ones, but Bridestowe in the later ones.

He lived with Richard and Jane in 1871 in Cornwall and and 1881 and 1891 in Yorkshire.  He died sometime after that; probably before 1901 as Richard was living with his daughter Bessie & SIL and Jane died in 1888.

I would welcome any input on any of the persons mentioned.  Thanks, RedFox

Roxburghshire / Geography Question - Roxburghshire
« on: Friday 25 February 05 17:59 GMT (UK)  »
What are the parishes in the county?  My ancestor was supposedly born in Newcastleton.  I was given to understand that the town was in Castleton Parish but Castleton is not one the parishes listed on FreeCEN.

Any information would be appreciated.  Thanks, RedFox

Renfrewshire / Clan Stewart and the LYLE families
« on: Friday 25 February 05 17:48 GMT (UK)  »
My LYLE ancestors were born in Govan Parish, Lanarkshire.  One couple was married in Barony Parish, Lanarkshire and one couple was married in Kilmalcolm, Renfrewshire.

In the marriage record from Renfrewshire, there is a variation of LYLE - LEILL.  In the US, LISLE has been used almost since the time of immigration which is unknown.   It is guess-timated the family arrived in the late 1700's, sometime between 1775 and 1799.  Also unknown is who traveled to America as the birthdates of some family members would preclude their traveling.   Part of the trouble in verifying their presence is that there are several men by the same name.

Of particular interest is information about the Clan and any related information about the LYLE families.  Thanks, RedFox

Lanarkshire / Geography Question - Glasgow
« on: Friday 25 February 05 17:35 GMT (UK)  »
I know Lanarkshire is southesast of Glasgow.  I think the parishes of Barony and Govan in Lanarkshire bordered Glasgow.

My question is:  What parish and county was Glasgow in during the 1700's - specifically 1715 to 1775.

Any help would be appreciated.  Thanks, RedFox

Lanarkshire / Clan Stewart and the LYLE famiies
« on: Friday 25 February 05 17:30 GMT (UK)  »
My LYLE ancestors were born in Govan Parish, Lanarkshire.  One couple was married in Barony, Lanarkshire and one couple in Kilmalcolm, Renfrewshire.

Recently I read that the name, LYLE, was part of the Clan Stewart from Renfrewshire.  I've seen several other spellings; one other in Scotland (LEILL) and the one used in the US almost since the time of immigration (LISLE).

Hopefully, someone can give me some insight into the Clan and those families called LYLE.    Thanks, RedFox

Lancashire / HARRIS, John - b. 1846 Liskeard
« on: Friday 31 December 04 04:45 GMT (UK)  »
John Harris married into my DAWE line.  His wife was Jane Dawe born about 1849 in Henwood, Cornwall.  Jane and their son, Joseph J., appear in the 1871 Cornwall census.

John and Jane had several more children and appear in the 1881 Yorkshire census.  John was a coal miner.  Jane was listed as a coal miner's wife in 1871.

In the 1891 and 1901 census records, John and his family appear in the Lancaster census records in Burnley, St. John the Baptist ecclesiastical parish.  First at 18 Scotts Terrace (1891) and then at 57 Hargher St. (1901).  John is still listed as a coal miner, but in 1891 the children are working in the cotton mills.  All of the children are gone in 1901 except John who is now in a coal mine.  winston, from RootsChat.com found this information.

I hope to learn more about this family and welcome any information, comments, and guidance.  Thanks, RedFox

Lancashire Lookup Requests / DAVIDSON, George - 1871 Liverpool
« on: Friday 31 December 04 04:35 GMT (UK)  »
George was born in Castle Carrock in 1845 and may have died about 1878 (this is uncertain).   George, his wife Jane (Longtown) and their sons John and Philip T. appear in the 1871 UK census record on Buckinham Sq. in Liverpool.   Philip T. was born there in 1870.

George is the brother of a direct relation, Isaac Davidson, who sailed to the US from Liverpool in March 1887.   Isaac's parents retired to Dalton-in-Furness.  His father appears in the 1901 census, living with his sister, Margaret, and her husband.  Isaac's mother died in I900 and is buried in Ireleth, Lanca.

I hope to do further research on the various family members and find out if more of them lived there.  Or if Liverpool was only a "jumping off place" for Canada and US.  The Davidsons and Robsons (Isaac's wife) are maternal relation.  My paternal relation also left from Liverpool.

I look forward to any information or guidance.  Thanks, RedFox

Cumberland / WILKINSON - Jane, abt. 1817-1893
« on: Friday 31 December 04 04:18 GMT (UK)  »
Jane Wilkinson married John Robson (also on the Cumberland site).  She was born about 1817 in Gilcrux, Cumberland.  Jane and John were married in 1838 in Plumbland Parish.  I have received a copy of John & Jane's marriage certificate giving their fathers' names.  Their children were raised in Aspatria.  Jane was buried in Laurel, NE, USA about 1893.    I believe John died in 1884, the year before Jane and their son Andrew's family sailed for the US.

I have two authorities for the year of Jane's birth - her tombstone reads 1823; the Gilcrux Bishops' Transcripts (GBT) say 1817.  I tend to believe the GBT since none of Jane's contemporaries were around when she died.

I am interested in learning more of Jane's family prior to her marriage.   Jane's parents were James Wilkinson and Jane Young, both of Gilcrux.   They were married about 1804. (GBT)  I believe her brothers included John, Joseph, George, David, and William, and her sisters included Margaret and Elizabeth.  I found a John born in 1805 and 1821.  Their names were taken from the GBT.

Looking forward to hearing from anyone who many have some information or guidance to further research.  Thanks, RedFox
