Cumberland / ROBSON, John - b. Scotland, d. Cumberland
« on: Saturday 25 December 04 14:55 GMT (UK)  »
John Robson was born about 1799 in Roxburghshire, Scotland (1881 UK census).  I know a lot more about John Robson after 1838 when he married Jane Wilkinson  (have a copy of marriage certificate).  His death was about 1884 in Aspatria, CUM, Eng.  There are a lot of years before his marriage to Jane Wilkinson that I would like to find out about.

However, my biggest problem is how common the name, John ROBSON, is.

The only thing I know is his father's name was Andrew; it's given on the marriage certificate.  Also, John and Jane's first child, a boy, born 1838 was named Andrew.  He died in infancy.  The second child, also a boy, was born 1840 and named Andrew.  This Andrew is my ancestor.   A family researcher thinks John Robson's father was Andrew born in Cumberland.  So maybe his mother was born in Newcastleton and she were visiting her family??  Any suggestions and leads greatly appreciated.   RedFox

Yorkshire (North Riding) / HARRIS, John - b. 1846 Cornwall died. YKS?
« on: Saturday 25 December 04 14:45 GMT (UK)  »
My ancestor, Jane Dawe, was born in Linkinhorne in 1849.  At some point, she married John Harris; their first son was Joseph J. Harris, born in Linkinhorne about 1869-70.

Jane Harris and her son, Joseph, both appear in the 1871 UK census record for Linkinhorne, Cornwall.  They are listed with her parent's family.  John was not in the record.  He may have been at the mines, or have gone elsewhere to seek work.  I know from the children's birthplaces (1881 UK census record for Yorkshire), that the family was in Cornwall through 1874.

In the 1881 UK census record for Yorkshire, John, Jane, and Joseph J. Harris appear.  As well as two children born in Cornwall (1882 & 1884) and two children born in Skelton, YKS. (1877 & 1879).   James Dawe, Jane's father, also is on the record.   The family lived at 76 Jackson St., Brotton, Yks.

Before the next census, the family moved to Lancashire.  I've listed them on that page on RootsChat.

I am interested in finding out more about John Harris.   In 1871, Jane is listed as a copper miner's wife.  In 1881, John is listed as a Pit Sinker.   I would welcome hearing from anyone with a connection to John HARRIS, or any DAWE or BAWDEN from Cornwall (Joanna Bawden, was James' wife's).    Thanks, RedFox

Yorkshire (North Riding) / RANSON, Hannah -- 1871 - 1947
« on: Monday 20 December 04 07:13 GMT (UK)  »
Hannah Ranson was my great, grandmother.  She was born in Bishop Auckland, Durham to Thomas Ranson and Mary Ann Hughes.   I only have the towns, but assume they were born in Durham.

Hannah married Alfred John Dawe about mid-1890 in Skelton, Yorkshire.  Hannah and her family had moved to Skelton before she was nine.  They were neighbor's of Albert's family and lived on the same street.

When they married, they lived in her family's home.  At least that is what I dedeuced from the 1891 and 1901 census.  Sometime between 1901 and 1910 Albert, Hannah, their family emigrated to Ontario, Canada.  Their son, Tom, may have gone then or earlier.  Tom's bride came from Leeds - they were married in Canada in 1911.  In 1919, both families came to the US.

I'm interested in finding out more about Hannah prior to her marriage to Albert.  I've talked to a relative in England who is related to Hannah, but I would like to gather more information. Thanks for any help you can give  me.   Any details about Hannah's life at any time would be appreciated.  This is also posted on the Durham page.    RedFox

Durham / RANSON, Hannah - 1871 to 1947

Hannah Ranson was my great, grandmother.  She was born in Bishop Auckland, Durham to Robert or Thomas Ranson.   Robert's wife was Ruth Johnson, Thomas's was Mary Ann Hughes.   Robert & Ruth were born in Durham; probably Thomas & Mary Ann were also.  I only have the towns so don't know.

Hannah married Alfred John Dawe about mid-1890 in Skelton, Yorkshire.  Hannah and her family had moved there before she was nine.  They were neighbor's of Albert's family and lived only a few houses apart.

Completed Census Requests / LEMING, Jane - 1841, Trewen
« on: Monday 29 November 04 22:09 GMT (UK)  »
Jane Leming (various spellings) married my ancestor, Richard Bawden Dawe.  Jane was born about April 1841 in Trewen.   She and Richard were married about 1860 in Cornwall.   She may have died in Yorkshire about 1888.   FreeBMD shows it 1878, but I have no other wife for Richard. So I'm guessing.

Jane's father, William Leming, was born in Bridestowe, Devon.  He lived with Jane & Richard's family in Cornwall and when they moved to Yorkshire.

Would welcome further info on Jane.  Women seem harder to trace because they change their name with marriage.  Any one else found that true?
Thanks, RedFox

Donegal / BELL - George (born abt. 1720), PRESTLEY - Elizabeth (born abt. 1801), William
« on: Thursday 04 November 04 23:09 GMT (UK)  »
I have two persons who married into my family who were born in Ireland - Donegal County, I believe.

One is Geoge Bell, born about 1720.  His daughter, Agness Bell born about 1765, was mother to George Bell Leeper.   Agnes was married to James Leeper (born about 1769) about 1799 in PA.   The Bell name is used through my family for the next several generations to today for both men and women; sometimes spelled Belle.

George Bell Leeper was married several times.  One of  his wives (first one?), was Elizabeth Prestley.  She was born about 1801 in Ireland.  Her father, William Prestley, was also born in Ireland.  Again, I'm not sure of the county.   Have seen the name spelled Priestley also.   George Bell Leeper (Luper?) and Elizabeth Prestly were married about 1822 in Ohio, I think.  George Bell Leeper was born in PA.  George Bell Leeper had a daughter, Mary Ann Leeper (Luper) who married James Lisle, my great, great, grandfather.  I believe Elizabeth was her mother.

Would love to learn more about both families - Bell and Prestley/Priestley.

Thank you in advance for any info you may have.  RedFox

Cumberland / BLACKBURN - Margaret, John
« on: Thursday 04 November 04 22:42 GMT (UK)  »
Margaret Blackburn, married into my ROBSON line about 1862.  At first, I believed she was a widow, because she had a son, John, listed in the 1871 UK census for Aspatria.  But would like to learn if that is true or if she was a single mother (never married) and other pertinent data.

I show her born in Dearham about 1834.   Her father were Joseph Blackburn; her mother or step-mother may have been Sarah Ann Fearon.  Both of Dearham.    Margaret and my ancestor, Andrew Robson, had a number of children; the oldest, Anne, born in 1863.  Andrew and Margaret lived and raised their family in Aspatria.  They, along with his mother, and their children sailed to the US in 1885.  They all settled in Nebraska.  I have photos of many of their headstones.

I'm interested in talking with anyone who may have a connection with or know of Margaret Blackburn.  Thanks, RedFox

Cumberland / MUMBERSON / MILBURN - Tom or Thomas, Daniel, Sarah
« on: Thursday 04 November 04 22:01 GMT (UK)  »
I have a Tom Mumberson who was born in Cumberland about 1860 to Daniel Mumberson and Sarah Milburn.    Tom married Jane Robson either in Cumberland or the US.  Jane sailed to the US in 1887.  Don't know when Tom emigrated.  They had two daughters, probably born in Nebraska, the US - Sarah Milburn Mumberson and Mildred Robson Mumberson.  The family settled and are buried in NE.   Tom may have had a brother, John, and a nephew, Thomas.   Thomas may have settled in Canada.

Tom's father, Daniel, was born in Harriston, Cul and died, was buried, or both in Aspatria.   Jane Robson was born and raised in Aspatria.  Her parents, Andrew and Margaret Blackburn Robson, emigrated two years before she did.  Jane went with her sister, Anne, and brother-in-law, Issac Davidson, all living in Aspatria at the time.  Isaac was born in Castle Carrock.

Although, Tom is not a direct relation, only by marriage, I am interested in finding out all I can about him.   Thanks for anything someone can find.  RedFox
