Down / LEEPER (Down & Donegal), BELL (Down &Cork), PRESTLEY
« on: Wednesday 16 May 07 20:00 BST (UK)  »
My ancestor, James Lisle, born 1832 OH married MaryAnn S. Leeper.  MaryAnn's mother and grandfather were born in Ireland; don't know the county.  But her mother, Elizabeth, was born in 1805; Elizabeth's father, William was born in 1766.

MaryAnn's grandmother on her father's side, Agnes Nancy Bell, was born in 1765 in Dromore, Garvaghy, County Down.  Agnes' father, George, was born in County Cork in 1720.

MaryAnn's ggg-grandfather, John Leeper, was born between 1701 - 1706 in possibly Donegal County, Ire.

The Leeper and perhaps the Bell clans settled in PA when they came to the US.  Is there a way to find when any of these persons might have immigrated?  I have been able to get records from England and some from Scotland, but Ireland remains an enigma.  Is it because of the turmoil that county underwent; consequently were records in such poor condition?

I'd appreciate any insight into research on those Americans born in Ireland.  Thanks, RedFox

Lancashire / John Harris & Jane Dawe Harris - Burnley
« on: Wednesday 20 December 06 22:18 GMT (UK)  »
I show John & Jane's family in Burnley in the 1891 and 1901 census records.  Neil of RootsChat.com was able to find the information I was seeking on Jane's brother, John Dawe & his wife Susan and their son regards their deaths.

I'm  hoping someone would be able to find out where and when John and Jane Harris died:  probably in or around Burnley after the 1901 census.  Jane's older (by two years) brother died in 1917.  Her SIL, Susan, died in 1907. That couple is buried in the Burnley Cemetery; I understand from Neil that it is in very poor condition, quite dangerous, and poorly maintained.

John & Jane Harris had six children I know of whose last names were Harris:  Joseph J. (b.1869), Ellen Dawe (b.1872), Thomas Henry (b.1874), Elizabeth Ann(b.1876), John Thomas(b.1879), and Rosina(b.1882).   The oldest three were born in Cornwall, Elizabeth and John were born in N. Skelton NRY, and Rosina was born in Brotton, NRY.

John was a miner, but his children worked in the cotton mills.  The parents were in St. John the Baptist ecclesiastical parish.

I would appreciate any input anyone could give me on this family.  Thanks.  RedFox   :)

Yorkshire (North Riding) Lookup Requests / DAWE, Jessie Ellen - Skelton, Cleveland, NRY
« on: Wednesday 20 December 06 21:08 GMT (UK)  »
Jessie was born in 1870 in Tintagel, Cornwall.  In 1901, she was a school teacher in Skelton, and lived with her sister, Mary Emily and BIL, Thomas Hudson and their family.  Jessie was still single at this point.  I'm told Jessie did some research on our family history in 1900.

Mary & Jessie's father, Richard, lived in the area with his second wife, as did their sister, Bessie Ann, her husband, Thomas L. Robinson and family.  Richard was a Deputy Mine Manager; Thomas Hudson was an Underground Ironstone Miner; and Thomas Robinson was a cabinet maker.  There were undoubtedy other family members in the immediate area.  Some of them had relocated to Lancashire; some of whom sailed to Canada sometime in the next ten years (but I don't know when).

This is the family as I know it.  The line that sailed to Canada is my ancestor, but I'm interested in learning about the siblings and would appreciate any input.  What I'd like to know is:  did Jessie marry and who, when did she die and where, did she follow her brothers (Alfred, Albert, & Percy) to Canada or go elsewhere?      RedFox   :)

Glamorganshire / DAWE/GILL/JOLLOW-Llantrisant, Glamorgan
« on: Monday 04 September 06 22:21 BST (UK)  »
According to my research of my family tree, at least three persons born in Cornwall, died in Llantrisant, Glamorganshire, Wales.  I didn't search further as the eldest person was born in 1814, so is a distant ancestor and sister of my direct descendent.

However, the area intrigues me.  In order to find out more about the area, I'd like to see what else I can find on these individuals.  Several sources (Ancestry.com, Family History Online, FamilySearch) have referred to them, but have found RootsChats to be especially helpful in the past.

Elizabeth DAWE (sister of my ancestor, James), b. 1814 near Linkinhorne, Cornwall.  Elizabeth married William GILL who died in the mid-1800's.  Their eldest daughter was Ann born born about 1837 in Linkinhorne area, Cornwall.  In 1856, Ann married Richard JOLLOW in Liskeard, Cornwall.  Linkinhorne is in the Liskeard registration district, so perhaps they were married at the registration offices.  Others in the family have done this.

I show a date of death of Elizabeth Dawe GILL of 21 Feb 1917 in Llantrisant.  I show the same date and place of death of Ann Gill JOLLOW.  I have a date of death for Richard JOLLOW of 15 Nov 1900 in Llantrisant.

I would appreciate any input on the area of Llantrisant, as well as any one who might be familiar with those names and times.  Thanks in advance for any input.   RedFox

Technical Help / Photos are okay; CD pics are blurry
« on: Tuesday 21 February 06 16:37 GMT (UK)  »
I took still photos of my time in England and Scotland last year.  Most, if not all, of the pictures are great (I still haven't got a digital).  Even those taken from a train and a speeding cab.  But the CD's leave something to be desired.

I spent money on 16 rolls; I only say this to explain the cost of getting the photos finished.  That doesn't bother me as much as the fact as the CD's were not worth the money.

Any suggestions geatly appreciated.   RedFox

Roxburghshire / ROBSON, Parish Registers 1798 on Newcastleton
« on: Friday 04 November 05 17:08 GMT (UK)  »
I'm still searching for information on my ancestor, John Robson.  His death certificate says he was 85 at the time of death in 1884.  All the census records show his birth as Scotland; in 1841 only "S", then more specific over the years.  Until I've seen Newcastleton, Roxburghshire on one.

John's marriage certificate shows his father's name was Andrew.  I'm hoping a parish register will show his birth or baptism date as well as his mother's name.

Ironically, his last residence was Newtown, Aspatria, Cumberland.  Supposedly, his father was from Cumberland, but I don't know where.

Would apppreciate any help with finding information on John.  Thank  you,   RedFox.

Lanarkshire / LYLE IMMIGRATION TO US 1775 to 1800?
« on: Friday 04 November 05 16:55 GMT (UK)  »
My ancestors left Scotland to come to America.  What I don't know is when and who all came.

Everything I've found, mentions records at the Library of Congress or in Philadelphia.  Will it be necessary to travel to the East to comb the records or is there another source?

As far as I know, they landed at Philadelphia; they are supposed to have settled in SW Pennsylvania.  I'm not sure how long they stayed in PA.  Some or all of them moved on to Ohio.

The original ancestor was born in Scotland; he died in PA.  His oldest son was born in PA and died in OH.  The youngest child was born in OH in 1820.   They were probably in PA for about twenty years.

Can anyone help or do you have any suggestions.  Thanks, RedFox

Lanarkshire / Govan Parish Registers - LYLE - 1750 on
« on: Friday 04 November 05 16:38 GMT (UK)  »
Hi, I have the OPR of two children - William and Robert.  A third, James, appears on the IGI.  I have the OPR of the marriage of the parents, Robert Lyle and Jean/Janet Taylor in 1754.

I'd like to know if there were other children and try and trace them.  Some of the family emigrated, probably before 1800 to America.  It's possible the parents (Robert and Janet) and grandparents (Robert Lyle and Margaret Masson) stayed in Scotland. The grandparents were married in 1717.

There are other issues which I'll request separately.  Thank you,  RedFox
