Roxburghshire / Re: Robson/Little
« on: Wednesday 15 July 09 18:23 BST (UK)  »
Hi, ev.  The surname ROBSON caught my eye, as well as Jedburgh.  I have identified a man who I believe was one of my ancestors - Andrew Robson.

Andrew was baptised in 1770.  According to a copy I received from Scotlands People he was the son of George and Mina Robson born Nov. 10.  It looks like the family was from Oxnam, although the writing is very difficult to make out.  Another person is listed who I can't read, possibly the landholder where George was a tenant farmer, who was a witness.  I'd also learned Andrew's birthdate from FamilySearch.  I got the name Andrew from his son's marriage certificate.  It is the only documentation I have of a relationship.  I have other verification that the son, John, was born in Newcastleton, but can find no baptism records to support that.

George's father may have been David; his mother Margaret Lillico.   David's father may have been Adam or Andrew; mother Elizabeth McKall.  This information came from someone else; I have not been able to document it personally.  I will have to see if there is a source for Jedburgh baptisms other than Scotlands Peoples - perhaps LDS records or online.

Although the Christian names aren't an exact fit, they do fit the naming pattern of my possible ancestors.  I've learned to heed that as well as the opposite fact.

I don't know if my research has any relation to yours or not, but felt I should share it, just in case.   RedFox

Lancashire / BURNLEY, LANCASHIRE
« on: Wednesday 15 July 09 17:13 BST (UK)  »
I'd like to chat with someone familiar with Burnley and Lancashire.  I have several questions revolving ancestors who lived in and around Burnley, schools, where they're buried, as well as others who lived in Briersfield, Lancashire.  At least one of them attended Hartley College, Manchester University for seminary training.

Five years ago, I chatted with neil.s.  He was a great help to me regarding some DAWE / BAWDEN / BOWDEN family members.  Related to them is the HARRIS family.

I hope someone will be able to be of assistance.  You may contact me by personal message or through the list, as you desire.  Thank you.  RedFox

Roobarb, that's when I get creative.  I've added a couple of items to my choices: fact, assumed name, church location [wedding info], can't think what else to cover unknowns like name changes, etc.  RedFox

aghadowey, thanks.  I'll do as you ask.  Actually, I don't know what religion Agness and her family were.  Nor what religion she was when married to James or their children.   The line trickles down to my grandfather who attended a Methodist Church, but don't think that has any bearing on his ancestors.  Rather, it's his wife's ancestry.

I'll go back and see what I can find on those records.  I can't check other church records if the information I have isn't correct.

Will try and research her and her family in the US from another angle.  Maybe then I'll be prepared to research her early years.

Thanks, again, for everything.  RedFox

Thanks, aghadowey.  I understand now that Agnes/Agness and Nancy might be interchangable. I'll add Ann to that.  I've had other females with names that showed up under different listings:  Jean/Janet and Jane/Jennifer are the two that come to mind because of the frequency it's happened.

I'm not surprised you find conflicting info on FS/LDS.  Sometimes I've just given up a search because I found the info just didn't make sense.  Ususally it's with the older records, even in the US records.  I can only use LDS records as indicators, and sometimes Ancestry.com.

In fact, I've found conflicting info on LDS on different pages: IGI, Individual record, etc.  I chose the info that's consistant with other searches I'd done.  But I do recall the name of Robert Forsythe and Mary McCracken.  I'll go back and see what I find again.  At the time, I added Robert Forsythe as a second husband, but found no information regarding time.  She might have married him before James.  Have another man, James Gibson also.  I'll add Mary McCracken to George/Geroge's file.

I've run into the lack of records in Scotland, and I think it may be for similar reasons.  There may be a strong reason she and/or her family left Ireland.  It's not encouraging, but I'll see what I can find on the country on the internet which may give me a clue to what turmoil was happening then.  Haven't had a chance to do that yet.

You're right.  Dates after 1821 would be too late unless I could find the family name.  Do you have a suggestion where to look besides LDS?

I'll copy your email to the Notes section and note you as the source on Mary McCracken's name.  I do the same with any other information I add.  Thanks in advance.  RedFox

Cork / BELL / Belle - County Cork
« on: Monday 06 October 08 20:21 BST (UK)  »
I'm working on researching ancestors in Ireland; I've barely begun.  I just put another posting under County Down on the daughter of the man who FamilySearch shows was born in County Cork.

George Bell was born abt. 1720 in County Cork according to FS.  He is the father of Agness Nancy Bell born in 1765 in County Down.  George's wife was Mary Jane Jess, but no further information was given as to when or where she was born.

Agness emigrated to the US before 1800; I don't know if either of her parents did.  Agness married in Adams, Cumberland, PA, so I assume she docked in Philadephia, PA.  The name of the town may have changed since then.  Agness married abt. 1799 when she was settled.  It was her granddaughter who married in to my family line.

I would appreciate any information on Agness' father George Bell.  As I say, I don't know if his wife Mary Jane Jess was born in Co. Cork as well.  Thanks,  Redfox

Down / BELL / BELLE - Garvaghy, County Down
« on: Monday 06 October 08 20:04 BST (UK)  »
I've been working in-depth on my ancestors who've lived in other areas of the UK, but not Ireland.  I have only a few distant ancestors from there as far as I know and would like to increase my knowledge of the family and the country.

I have information from FamilySearch on Agness Nancy Bell.  FS says she was born on 12 Jun 1765 in Dromore Parish, Garvaghy, Co. Down to George Bell and Mary Jane Jess.  I don't know when she immigrated to the US but she married James Leeper in Adams, Cumberland Co., PA.  I was given a marriage date of 1799, but don't know if that date's correct unless the first two children were born to a prior wife.

If it is, she Agness and James had four more children in PA.  One son, George Bell Leeper, married Elizabeth Prestley in 1822.  Elizabeth's father was William; one or both of them might have been born in Ireland.  She was born about 1801.  It was one of their daughters who married into my line.  Most of this information was gleaned from FamilySearch or Ancestry.com.

I'd like to verify from Irish records, if possible, the births of Agness Bell and her parents George Bel [abt. 1720]l and Mary Jane Jess.  I will spend some time learning more about the country and Country Down on the internet, but would appreciate any input from listers.  It's been my experience on RootsChat that the listers are very knowledgable in many areas.  Bell is sometimes spelled Belle in my family.  It is still used in naming boys and girls.

Sorry, I forgot to sign this the first time.  Have just added a message under County Cork on Agness' father George Bell.  Thanks, RedFox

Renfrewshire / Re: Lyle - Lyles family from Renfrewshire
« on: Monday 06 October 08 16:07 BST (UK)  »
LadyLyle, thank you for answering.  You have just discussed the second branch of my Lyle family.  I've found the Darlings and Lyles in Vermont early records.  Also found them in Illinois in 1870 census records as well as some marriage and land records.

I came to the realization that Darlings were a prominent family in Vermont.  In fact, I would regard them as some of the earliest settlers in the colonies.  More so than the Lyles, my ancestors.

Early in your message, you mentioned Wm Sr. and Jennette and their four sons William, John, Thomas, and Robert.  Those name are almost the same as those Robert of the other branch had given his sons, substituting Thomas for James.  His wife's name was Jean or Janet!  That's why I think there might be a connection between the two families unless it's just happenstance.

I'd like to compare your info against my info and input what I don't have.  Of course, I would give you credit for any changes, as well as copy your email in the Notes section.  Standard procedures for me.

All the names sound familiar to me, but it's been awhile since I've worked with this branch.  They must have made an impression on me as they lived so recently in the westward expansion of the US.  Much thanks,  Judy / Redfox

Cheshire / Re: HEGINBOTHAM - my Cheshire link
« on: Monday 21 July 08 18:08 BST (UK)  »
Hi, Adnepos_Iacobi.  I've traced back to Frank Heginbotham's birth, his parents and siblings which takes me back to the mid-1800's.  I join Stan's family when Frank marries Isabelle Robson, one of my ancestors.  So I haven't traced the Heginbotham surname back farther.

I notice a variety of spellings of the surname in your post.  That's one reason I haven't gone back farther; the other is I'm uncertain of the ability to verify the information.

I have verfied the Robson line back to 1799, maybe further.  Again, only some of the information beyond that is verified.  Unfortunately, the farther back you go, the less likely it's possible.  RedFox
