Australia / Re: Foster/Walker Help
« on: Tuesday 09 January 07 05:39 GMT (UK)  »
Hi Meggles

The only information i have is what my father wrote in my baby book on the family tree. Apparently he mentioned to my mother about a connection to Australia (something about convicts). I have been trying to get back in contact with my father but he has disappeared so he isn't any help on this matter!

1868 i think would be a little early, from what i have learnt on a new zealand forum is that Edgars wife Edna Foster died on Aug 28th 1977, in New Zealand. I'm sure Edgar would have died in New Zealand too but have yet to find anything on him. i assume he would've been around the same age as Edna so 1868 would be a little bit of stretch.

Do you know the easiest way to search Aussie records? Since i don't know what area i should search it is probably quite difficult!

Thanks
Cat

Hi Carol

Wow i don't know how you did that! I have been searching ancestryUK and familysearch. for something and have not come up with much! That all sounds spot on. So if thats the case with Edith maybe she had Alfred out of wedlock.
Kinda weird with the things i did find on Edith as on Sidney G Palmers birth on familysearch she is recorded as Edith Stone Street. I would like to know how many husbands this woman had  :o

I also found in 1911 there was a Edith Stone who married a man last name Street so that maybe explain that, yet there is still that question of where she got the bishop name...what you have sounds all correct...i at least have that to work on!

Will need to get birth cert for Alfred!

Thank you so much  :)

Australia / Foster/Walker Help
« on: Tuesday 09 January 07 01:48 GMT (UK)  »
Hi
I'm trying to find any information on my Foster and Walker side of family.

The only links i have is:
Edgar Sydney*Sidney Foster
Edna Walker

They are my great grandparents. I guess they would have been born late 1800s - early 1900s.  They came to New Zealand at some stage, i'm trying to establish where they originated from. I always thought that they originated from England yet there are no records of them there (that i have been able to find). Family talk says that they may have been linked to some Aussie convicts.

So i'm hoping maybe there is some truth to it and there is some record to  be found in Australia somewhere. I would have no idea when or where though, so this might be a long shot! I know they didn't marry in New Zealand so if they were in Australia there might be a marrigae record.

Is there anyone who could help or give some advice on this? I don't know many sites to search in australia, have tried a few but with no luck.

Thanks Cat.

Hi Delboy

Thanks for that! The Bishop i mentioned started in England so wouldn't be anything in the NZ index sorry. Thanks for the offer though!

Do you know if there was a marriage for Edgar Foster and Edna Walker in that index? They may have married in England, but i don't know for sure.

Thanks Cat

Sorry just talked to my mother and she told me Alfred would've died in the 60s yet definitely before 1969. He died of lung cancer (was a heavy pipe smoker) Muriel remarried into a Johnson family soon after and came to New Zealand.  Alfred was a farmer, maybe his father farmed...farming has run through the generations so far.

I have had absolutely no luck with any records for Alfred and Muriel, all is from family members.

thanks

Hi Casalguidi,
Thanks for taking a interest in my research, I'm afraid i don't know too much, my grandfather has Alfreds and Muriels wedding  cert, i will need to ring him and ask him to give me all the details on it i think.  He didn't mention any parents names, just Abel as being a witness and his stepfather. Abel was a painter/decorator.

I assume Alfred died before 1969 as my grandparents left UK in 1961 and he wasn't around then, i'm thinking he may have died late 1940-early 50s.  i recall my mother saying he was only around 40 and she never met him, she was born 1957.  He would have never left the Kent area. I'm pretty sure he would have been a farmer or something along those lines.

The only proof i have found of Edith and Abel is from 2 records of another son. I found them on FamilySearch. 1 was for his birth recording that his parents were Abel and Edith, he was born in 1924, in Hawkhurst, Kent. Then there was another for his marriage in 1953, stating the same.  I have been told Abel only married once. His wife (Alfreds mother) apparently ran off with another man in the end (after 4 children with Abel)  Abel never married again and Alfred never talked to his mother again after that.

I think Stone is Ediths maiden name, Street may have been a first marriage? Busy lady thats for sure! Somewhere in her history there should be a Bishop if she is the mother, I have a few things found on Edith yet nothing i want to dig into too much as not sure if it is all the same lady and records are to sketchy!

Sounds so complicated, yet you got one up on me as i haven't been able to find any  marriage for Alfred or Muriel!  i only know from the marriage cert that Grandad read to me over the phone.  Might need him to scan it and email it to me!

Hi
Can anyone help me find information on my great grandfather? All i know is his name is Alfred Charles Bishop, born in 1913, in Kent, his parents are both unknown to the family.

I'm new to this so this might be hoping for too much!

I know Alfred married a Muriel Isabel Evelyn Alice Chandler (very long name!) in 1934.

Also Alfreds mother married Abel E Palmer sometime after Alfreds birth. When Alfred got married his stepfather (Abel) was on the wedding cert as a witness.

I have found a little bit on AncestryUK site, yet nothing solid. Also what i came up with did not explain how my gt grandfather received the name Bishop!

What i have found was that Abel Palmer married a woman named Edith Stone-Street. I found a birth for one of their sons yet i haven't been able to find anything on Alfred.

I mainly want to know Alfreds parents and where the Bishop name came from.

Any help would make my day  :)

Thanks
Cat

Hi Kate NZ

Thanks for that, i think i will get some certs on them, i don't know any dates at all so its making some things a little difficult, would be alright if i had contact with that side of the family, but my attempt has not been returned as yet! I thought my mothers side was going to be more difficult but i have tracked back to 2x my gt gt grandparents on my grandmothers side now. Finding it easier researching family in the 1800s then it is to research early 1900s! Especially when there are marriages or babies out of wedlock!  England seems to have alot of places to search yet my family seems to evade all records!
For example my last name is Bishop and it only dates back to my gt grandfather he was the only child in the family with that name, its like his mother just grabbed it out of thin air! She had 3 last names that i have come up with so far, maiden and 2 marriages, none to a Bishop!
I enjoy doing this research but i think some things i may have to get a pro in for them to be resolved! ::)
Once again thanks
Cat

I have just started researching my family tree, i know very little about my fathers side, as have not had much communication with him or his family. Does anyone have any links to these people.

My great grandparents:
Edna Foster (nee Marshall)
Edward Foster
From what i have heard they came to New Zealand from England or Australia,

Other great grandparents:
Muriel Elizabeth Carlton (nee Truelove) Born early 1900s in England. Came to NZ when she was in her late teens with her family.
Alan Durwood Carlton, would really like to know where he originated from, I have just been given info that he died in 1962. So I now know where he is buried, thanks to a very nice researcher on familytreecircles!

I think all this family settled and stuck around the lower north island, especially lower hutt area.

This is all i know and seem to be coming up with nothing.
Any help or people with links to this family?
Thanks
Cat

Have modified this as some names were wrong when i started the post! Have corrected them, sorry to all that have been trying to hunt down the Fosters!! :-[
