The Lighter Side / Re: Why research your family tree???
« on: Tuesday 11 March 08 00:12 GMT (UK)  »
My Grandmother got me started as she often talked about her family and her life in the country as a young girl. She came from a fairly well to do family and spent her Sundays playing tennis, having tea parties and piano recitals, all of which fascinated me. It was really a gentle time back then and I just had to delve further into this wonderful way of life. Of course what started as an interest soon bacame a passion and is now an obsession  ;D
My Grandfather was not let off the hook either and while both have now passed away I feel that my research has kept a little of their past alive and is sooooooo interesting! I have been researching now for near 20 years and it's wonderful to tell my kids of their family past. I am back to 1680 with one side of the family and have so much more to research. It's a never ending hobby and I love it. :) :)

Looks like a great time was had by all! I've been viewing the thread and piccies and stewing in jealousy  ;D cos I couldnt be there. The annoying thing is we moved from the Sunshine Coast to Cairns a while back. Probably would have made it if we were still living on the Sunshine Coast. Ahh well, glad everyone had a good time.

Yorkshire (West Riding) Lookup Requests / Re: William Marshall - Thorpe Salvin

Hi Nannienz,
I've been involved with SRO for a few years now. Excellent site for any research of Yorkshire and in particular Sheffield where some of my clan were from. They are always looking for volunteers to help transcribe probate, marriage, census and death records. Very easy to do and you can do it from any part of world as long as you have a pc (I'm  from Aust). Here is the link
http://www.sheffieldrecordsonline.org.uk/
They are a great bunch of people (like rootschatters) who are always willing to help. I find transcribing for the site very interesting not to mention the fact that I can often help out  rootschat members as well. Very satisfying! I'lm sure they would love to hear from you.

Hi Nannienz,
Here is the probate I mentioned.

Letters of Administration of the personal estate and effects of William Marshall late of Moor Hill in the parish of Thorpe Salvin in the county of York farmer deceased who died 11 December 1857 at Moor Hill aforesaid were granted at Wakefield to Emma Marshall of Moor Hill aforesaid widow the relict of the said deceased she having been first sworn.
Effects under 800GBP Probate granted 16th April 1858

Could be William and Elizabeth's son William. Would seem he died at a relatively young age.
I have been helping to transcribe the probate indexes for Sheffield Records Online for a few years now and keep a record of all indexes in my data base as many probates are yet to be uploaded to the site.

Hope this helps  ;)

Can you give the names of his children? I have a probate for a William Marshall 1858 of Thorpe Salvin proved by wife Emma Marshall. Happy to post it if you think he could be related.

Wiltshire Completed Lookup Requests / Re: 841,1851 census lookup please
« on: Wednesday 27 February 08 01:40 GMT (UK)  »
Your quite right, Louise. John emigrated to Australia in 1854 and remarried to a Jane Bailey which is where we are presently at. Going back from there is proving to be a problem as we have no record of his parents name on any census in Wiltshire. As I mentioned earlier, we will have to look at ordering certificates. Hopefully his marriage certificate to Jane in Australia may prove helpful with his parentage. Otherwise, we may have to look at ordering the UK marriage cert to Maria Tinham. At the very least we may have the Smith/Gibbs name to look into further. Ugggggghhh not a "Smith" So far, I've been very lucky to avoid that surname in my research. Guess it had to pop up sooner or later! ;D
Thanks for your help, Louise

Thanks so much, Suz
As with all things seems I will have to do more digging. I was hoping to get John Brunsdon's parents names but it's never that easy!  ;D
Here's hoping a marriage or death certificate can clarify this.
Really appreciate your help.  :D

Thanks Tuppie, your a legend
The Bradburn name is a bit of a mystery. Could Ada be Abraham and Mary's daughter? Will have to look into this.

Alexander Denial and wife Anna Marie are part of my clan. I already have the MI for their grave as well as a photo of it. Would love to get my hands on a photo of Abraham and Mary's grave but sigh I live too far away in Oz.

Many thanks again, Tuppie
