Thanks Ruskie, I give it a  go. They may take pity on us colonials  ;D. I forgot to mention that Nora died at the age of 17 which coincides with my Nora born jan/feb/mar quarter 1900 so unfortunately Ada Rogers is not a match but thankyou anyway. Any suggestions are appreciated.

Yorkshire (West Riding) / Records for Storthes Hall Asylum
« on: Thursday 28 June 12 02:37 BST (UK)  »
Hi All - Yesterday I received a death certificate for what I hoped would be my grandfathers sister Nora Rogers. I was hoping the certificate would confirm (or not confirm) if she was part of my Rogers clan as she dropped off the face of the earth after the 1911 census. However, the certificate has only posed more questions that answers as this Nora Rogers died 1st Feb 1917 at the Storthes Hall Asylum. All the info points to her being MY Nora but of course the informant on the certificate was the medical super. I now need to find the records for Storthes Hall Asylum which I understand are held at Sheffield Archives. Living in Australia has made this a little tricky. Can anyone advise how I go about trying to get records of her admittance (am hoping to put a name to her father or mother) or anything! I've gone into the archives on line but most of the info is subject to the freedom of information act.
Thanks for any help offered.

Nora's occupation on the death cert has her as "spinster, Ecclesall Workhouse, Sheffield"

Hi Scott,
Do you know the occupation for John Thompson (Amanda's father)? I have the following probate for a John Thompson of Ripon, farmer who died 1860. This might explain why Amanda is found living with her aunt and uncle in the 61/71 census that Suz posted.

The Will of John Thompson late of the city of Ripon farmer deceased who died 1 May 1860 at the said city was proved at Wakefield by the oaths of William Thompson of the said city ironmonger Robert Thompson of Shaw near Oldham in the county of Lancaster tin plate worker and George Thompson of the said city innkeeper the brothers and the executors.
Effects under 600GBP Probate granted 27 July 1860

Could this be your John Thompson?

Cheers

Bee,

You may find this site useful

http://hometown.aol.co.uk/KevinAsplin/home.html

I had a quick look in the names index and found
Coates, George Ernest    26991, Sgt.    41st Coy., 4th Bn. I.Y.
and
Ripley, George William    45108, Trooper*    38th Bn. I.Y.

Could be your men. Worth having a look as the site has lots of other info on the Boer War. Found one of my elusive ancestors on this site  ;D

Hi Bron

Thank you for that. Definately the corrrec John.

I have never heard of a Sarah Kendall, but have done some research and found that in 1841 Sarah was 40 and had a daughter 10 years old, and living with parents John and Mary Kendall...so wonder if daughter was illegitimate? Maybe to John Daniel??

You say that probates are only up to 1861..does that mean that I would not be able to order one for after that date??

Brenda

Hi Brenda,
I transcribe probates for Sheffield Records Online and have them in my data base. The probates go up to 1940 at least and SRO staff take the time to gather the probates for transcribing. It's a big project and takes time but I'm sure if there is a probate for John Daniel it can be obtained. I will post a request on SRO and see if we have any joy for you. Shall keep you posted.  ;D

Cheers

Brenda,
I have the  following probate of a Sarah Kendall with John Daniel, builder, Coburg St, Leeds as executor.

The Will of Sarah Kendall late of Leeds in the county of York spinster deceased who died 29 May 1859 at Leeds aforesaid was proved at Wakefield by the oath of John Daniel of Cobourg Street Leeds aforesaid joiner and builder the sole executor.
Proved 5 July 1859 effects under 100GBP

No probate for John Daniel of Coburg St though at present the probates are only up to 1861 but I do have a probate for a John Daniel of Church Fenton executed by Mary Daniel. She is recorded as his wife not daughter. Let me know if this could be useful to you and I will post it.
