Family History Beginners Board / Gretna Green Marriage records
« on: Friday 06 August 04 10:08 BST (UK)  »
My gggrandfather whilst resident in Scotland had 9 children. My uncle has all 9 birth certificates. On each of them, the date of marriage is different. We are beginning to suspect that he was never married to my gggrandmother. Both of them were born in London and they produced children in the Stranraer area of Scotland. Of course, they may have married at Gretna Green on their way to Scotland, which might account for the difficulty in tracing the marriage. Does anyone have any tips for tracing Gretna (and similar) marriages? Would they be recorded centrally in Scotland? The marriage would have been around 1850.

The Common Room / Re: Slightly Dumb Question!

Before you get your hopes up too much, it is only the graves of the wealthy that are marked with stone memorials. So although Walter will have been buried in the churchyard, your chances of finding his grave would rely on finding a graveyard plan of the time.  I know that at my own local church for instance, there were fifteen burials on one day during a cholera outbreak in the 1840s and I bet that there were not 15 separate graves dug for that purpose.  Good luck with your search.

My ggrandfather William was born in 1856 when his parents (John & Charlotte Carver) were living in 10 Hodgson St in Hull. John died in 1878 and in the 1881 census Charlotte is recorded as living at 12 Hodgson St in Hull on her own. Does anyone have access to the census records from 1851, 61 and 71 for those addresses? I have not managed to track down any siblings for William to date. Many thanks in advance.

Yorkshire (East Riding & York) / Would a Beverley birth be registered in Hull?
« on: Thursday 05 August 04 13:04 BST (UK)  »
Am searching for a 1856 birth certificate for Matilda Cross, born in Beverley. Can anyone tell me if I would have to go to Hull to get a copy or if it would be elsewhere?

Completed Census Requests / Livinia Dosy 1881 census - unusual name
« on: Tuesday 03 August 04 20:26 BST (UK)  »
Livinia Dosy is given in the 1881 census as being resident in the house of Abraham Wilkinson in Allerton. She is his grand daughter. Dosy is a rather unusual name and I cannot find any other Yorks Dosys anywhere. Abraham had 7 daughters so one obviously married a Mr Dosy, but I haven't turned up that record yet. Has anyone come across the name before? I'm sure Abraham was illiterate so the name may have been recorded wrongly. What might the name be? Dowsey? Any other suggestions or insights most welcome.

Durham Completed Look up Requests / Re: Where is/was Craggy Head, Co Durham?

Thanks. I think that you are right. Examining the census transcript closely, I think it may read Cragg Head, which would match your theory. The quality of the transcription isn't brilliant, which is the only excuse I have got for misreading  the entry.

Thanks for the tip. Have you used the site? I have tried a numberr of directories relating to various areas of my research and all return an error message suggesting that I need to input a search string. Unfortunately I cannot see where to enter a search string. I have read the 'how to use this site' pages, but appear to be following the instructions. It looks like a great site, if only I could get at the directories.   :(

Family History Beginners Board / Researching RC ancestors
« on: Tuesday 03 August 04 12:41 BST (UK)  »
I believe that until a certain date, a marriage not conducted in a CofE church was not recognised as being legal. Can anyone help with information about when that date occurred and whether the same applied to baptisms and burials? My research is stumbling because my Sullivan ancestors appear to have been baptised in the local CofE church in the 1818-1828 period and family legend holds that as (reputedly) first generation immigrants from Co Cork, they were solidly catholic.

Any guidance gratefully received. I am of course aware that I may be looking at the wrong baptisms, but I thought the answer to this question might help others.

Durham Completed Look up Requests / Completed Where is/was Craggy Head, Co Durham?
« on: Tuesday 03 August 04 12:34 BST (UK)  »
My ggrandmother gave her place of birth in 1901 census as Craggy Head, Co Durham. She married a man from Gateshead, which suggests it is at the northern end of the county, but can anyone help me with its precise location?

Many thanks
