Other Countries / Re: Argentina: George and James Pow of Hawick
« on: Monday 11 March 13 15:34 GMT (UK)  »
Hi Monica -

It very much looks like it is the same Pows. George Scott Pow married my grandmother's sister (Janet Netta Chalmers) in Hawick, Scotland, on 20 June 1919. Their son James Chalmers Anderson Pow would appear to be your father (the appearance of "Chalmers" being a strong indicator). And my parents recall that he was in the Royal Navy. Your grandmother, Janet Netta Chalmers Pow, died in Melrose, Scotland, in 1947. Maybe your father re-married in Argentina after the war. I'm told that he died in an "accident". My father and yours lived in the same part of Hawick and were well aquainted. Let me know if this is indeed your family and if you want more information on any aspect. Apologies for the delay in response - I did not get an alert from Rootschat!
Regards, Jim

Helen had an illegitimate daughter Margaret (born 12 Aug 1858) who was aged 2 in the 1861 census. In 1871 she was Maggie aged 12, of course, and described as grand-daughter of John and Margaret Jack (at that time Helen was no longer with the Jacks and may have moved to live with her mother in Eckford, where she died in 1873).

Hi -
No, William Chalmers was not a Miller (parents: Chalmers and Smith) or a miller (occupations: carting contractor and then inn-keeper). Although I have not found a marriage record, he had 8 children with "wife" Janet Little.

Jim

Thanks Lesley - Church built in 1763 or 1765, so bearing up well.

Yes, I see from the air photo that it is a quite substantial graveyard, and worth a look next time I'm west of where I usually am (Midlothian).

Hi Lesley

The coincidences that pop up in this caper never cease to amaze!

Google Maps indicates two churches: "Tinwald Parish Church" and "Tinwald Church" in the Kirk Brae/Kirk Bank corner - is that just an error? The one labelled "Parish" looks like the real thing.

Wm Chalmers' father, Andrew, was a blacksmith circa 1802,  so ever any sign of an old smiddy in the village?

I haven't yet established the birth and marriage places of Andrew, so don't know if they were local.

Cheers,
Jim

Hi Lesley
Yes, according to A. Allen's "History of Channelkirk" (1900) the Robertsons followed my Chalmers gggrandparents at the Inn (see extract below). I'm unaware of any record or hints of wealth generation by the Chalmers family. Their two sons, James (my greatgrandfather) and Andrew both went to work for the railways. Maybe your Mr Robertson watered-down the beer!!
Regards,
Jim

"Annfield, a quiet, solitary, licensed house at an inter-
. mediate distance between Glengelt and Carfrac Mill on
Edinburgh road, has no claim to that antiquity which is
a characteristic of so many places in the parish. It is of
the same age as the public road which passes it, and
which was opened in the year 1832. The name is said
to have been given to it by the proprietor, out of regard
to a much respected sister. It has always been a licensed
inn, and since it had existence, three tenants have held it
up to the present day, viz., Thomas Crooks, William
Chalmers, and the present tenant, James Robertson. It is
rented at £\2 per annum, and is the property of John
Borthwick, Esq. of Crookston."

Seeking images or recollections of the Annfield Inn formerly located near Oxton on the Edinburgh Road. The structure was demolished, probably in 1970's, to accommodate improvements to the A68. My gg-grandfather was inn keeper from sometime in 1840's until dying there in 1872.
The (hopefully) attached sketch was prepared from someone's description for inclusion in "Lauderdale in the 20th Century".

Many thanks Folks. I'll get to the burials info at Hawick. It's more than likely that there was never a headstone at Yetholm

Cauther Lassie: Yes the John Jack and wife Margaret Bell are the family that Helen Stewart lived with in 1851 (Census), and are my ggg-grandparents:
John Jack (44, general labourer) and wife Margaret (42) living at Middlemostwalls, Sprouston, Rox., with children Janet (17, farm servant), Jane (16, farm servant), Helen (11, Helen Stewart, illegitimate daughter of Agnes Jack, reputed father: Andrew Stewart), John (9), Margaret (7), Isobella (2). Also Janet Bell (76, mother-in-law, widow, former farm servant, born in Gordon, Berwickshire).

From the RCE death record:
Helen Stewart Jack (33, “sister” and cousin of John Jack jnr) died 10 June at her mother’s (by then Agnes Whilans) home at Cessford Cottages, Eckford, Rox,. Cause of death: injuries sustained in consequence of her clothes having caught fire; no medical attention. Buried in Yetholm Churchyard.

The mystery is that my late grandparents in Hawick visited Yetholm Churchyard for some reason - and I thought it must be a Jack connection as my gran's mother was a Jack.

So that's the story.
Thanks again for your help.
Jim

Hi -
Robert Tait's birth: 4 November 1885. That's all that I know other than that in 1911 he was still in Jedburgh,Scotland, working in insurance sales. My mother, his neice, believes he went to US, but apologies if that turns out to be an error. Appreciated - thanks. Jim
