Durham / Completed: Needles in a Haystack 1: The Smith Sisters
« on: Saturday 12 May 07 13:47 BST (UK)  »
Hi
I'm trying to find our what happened to two of my great-grandfather's sisters Margaret [born around 1860 in Middridge Durham] & Ann [born around 1870 in Middridge Durham] Smith.
In 1881 they were living with their widowed father [Christopher] at Heighington Highside Bank Heighington County Durham.
I can't find them after that. Any ideas?

Australia Lookups completed / Completed: Joseph Hill - Launceston
« on: Friday 11 May 07 02:24 BST (UK)  »
Hi
Following on from a previous enquiry of mine in regard to the Grant / Maybury Family which is at the following reference: http://www.rootschat.com/forum/index.php/topic,227430.0.html
I've been to the Tasmanian Archives site and it provided a number of answers but left me with a number of questions about the Hill family of Launceston.
I think I've found the right Joseph Hill [1812-1898] who married Eliza Lloyd [1818-1879]. Don't know where either of these were born or who their parents were.
Joseph & Eliza had a number of children but some are listed as only male or female without forenames. There are males born in 1843, 1852 & 1860; and females born in 1844, 1848, 1852 & 1856 [one of these would be a Louisa who married John Lithgoe in 1863]. There are also named children - Caroline [1846]; my direct ancestor Fanny [1850]; Charles Thomas [1854]; Bennet James [1858]; & William Alfred [1862-1863].
Is there any way I can identify the unnamed children?
Also here appears to be a marriage of a Joseph Hill [born 1811] to an Ann Charlton in 1839. I'm wondering if this is an earlier marriage for my Joseph?

Cork / County Cork: Maybury & Henry Families
« on: Wednesday 09 May 07 08:52 BST (UK)  »
O.K. so this is what I know:
Thomas James Maybury was born around 1826 in County Cork. His parents were Thomas Maybury [a saddler] & Hannah [nee Bennett]. He had a brother Robert born around 1814.

Thomas married Ann Henry around 1855. Ann was the daughter of John Henry [a schoolteacher] & Eliza Ramsay.
She had a sister Jane born around 1832.

Thomas & Ann had 2 children. Robert Henry [who died before 1860] and William born 1860.

Thomas & Ann migrated to Australia in 1860.

I believe Thomas's brother Robert married Anne's sister Jane.
They also migrated to Australia [unsure of when at the moment.

Is there any way I can find out more information about Thomas & Anne's parents?

Durham Lookup Requests / William Harrison-Dorothy Routless
« on: Saturday 05 May 07 15:12 BST (UK)  »
Hi
I'm trying to find out more information on William Harrison and Dorothy Routless who married at Great Stainton, Durham, England on 28/11/1778 [as per the IGI]. I am unable to find any birth records online and wonder if anyone out there can check the relevant parish record or suggest my next move given that I am based in Australia.

They apparently had one child Thomas Harrison born in 1781 at Great Stainton. Thomas can be found in the census records of 1841/1851/1861 living in Redmarshall with his wife Anne and some of their children [that's another query for a later date].

Completed Census Requests / Where do I find the right James Smith-Completed
« on: Wednesday 02 May 07 01:17 BST (UK)  »
Hi

I'm trying to find the birth certificate of my great grandfather James Smith born around 1860 in Middridge, County Durham.
I know his father was Christopher Smith & mother Ann [I'm not sure of her maiden name: I thought going through free BMD that it was Wade but now I'm having doubts so the obvious answer is to get James birth certificate].
Now I have found 4 possible entries at free BMD [2 in 1859 & 2 in 1861]. All were registered at Auckland.
I've searched the Tees Valley index for this period and they have 5 possibles - 1 in 1859 [Harlepool]; 2 in 1860 [Guisborough & Hartlepool]; and 2 in 1861 [Hartlepool & Stockton-on-Tees]. Darlington has 1 record listed for 1860 and Durham has 5 in 1859 [2 registered at DurhamWest & 3 at Durham Central] and 4 in 1861 [2 at DurhamWest; 1 at Durham North; and 1at Durham Central].
Now to save me spending a heap of money I don't have and having my desk covered with birth certificates I don't need can anyone suggest what direction I should take in working out where do I find the right James Smith?

Yorkshire (West Riding) / Completed: Smith family - adoptions?
« on: Monday 30 April 07 06:54 BST (UK)  »
Hi
Don't know if this is the right place to ask this but here's goes.

My grandmother died in 1936 [in or near Pudsey] either:
- while she was pregnant with twins
-  or giving birth to twins
[no-one in the family is quite sure of the facts].

Now if it was the latter of these two options the twins may:
- have been stillborn
- died shortly thereafter
- or were adopted out
[again no-one in the family is quite sure of the facts].

Would a concrete answer to this be listed on my grandmother's death certificate?

Following on from this is if they were adopted out is there anywhere I can follow up on what happened to them?

Life wasn't meant to be easy

Thanks

London & Middlesex Completed Lookup Requests / Alexander Thompson - Completed
« on: Friday 20 April 07 14:27 BST (UK)  »
Here what I know:

I've found the right Thompson [Alexr] in the 1901 census living in Battersea, London, aged 39, a government messenger and born in Ireland. His wife Hannah was also aged 39, born in Herts. The children listed [Muriel A.H. & fELIX A.H.] are the right ones. I think I've got the right marriage details: Jan-Mar 1898 in St George, Hanover Square, London. Vol. 1a Pg. 598 Alexander Thompson-Hannah Prothero.

That's it. I can't find either listed in the previous census records.

I know the obvious answer is a trip to the G.R.O. but has anyone out there tell me if I'm missing something in relation to online records.
