Thank you again everyone for all the information.

This family is definitely a challenge! The one thing that is puzzling me is why the name change from Drake to Oates? She didn't marry (or I cannot find a marriage). She is listed as single woman on marriage and census. She hasn't moved miles to hide from some one either.

Best wishes

This is not an ancestor of mine. I have been trying to help a cousin with this. She did have a copy of Henry's marriage certificate, it listed no father but he put his mothers details instead as Charlotte Oates.

Thank you all for your input. I will pass on everything. I feel the only way forward is to get the parish records and as many certificates as possible. Although I think this family will take a while to unravel!

Thank you again
Best wishes

Does anyone know of any links for Mirfield?

I have a bit of a dilema.
1861 census Mirfiled:-
Charlotte Oates 64
Jackson Oates 16
Henry Oates 13
Abraham Jackson 44

Same family 1851 census still in Mirfield
Charlotte Drake 53
Jackson Drake 6
Henry Drake 3
Abraham Jackson 34

I have the marriage details for both children. Jackson states his father is Abraham Jackson and Henry puts his mother in the fathers bit (never seen that before).

My problem is why the name change? I cannot find a marriage and both boys christenings are in the name Oates?

I'm puzzled, any ideas?
Thank you in advance to anyone who is willing to help.
Best wishes

Does anyone know how to apply for a will from the UK?

Adeline Wright Kynaston died 1951 in Los Angeles, California and left an estate to be shared by our family. I would like to apply for a copy of the will but haven't tried to get records from the USA before.
Thanks in advance

The Common Room / Re: Methods in order to trace living relatives
« on: Wednesday 17 November 10 17:12 GMT (UK)  »
Hi

I have managed to trance many living relatives in the 12 yrs i have been researching.  I have also managed to trace branches in the USA and Australia. I have used no professional help. (surname Cooper, not that easy)

If you know of your relatives last area of residence you could try an advert in the paper (i had 4 replies this way) Even if they have moved an old friend or neighbour might still be in touch with them. Also search electoral registers.

I now have many more relatives, but more importantly friends. There is also another side to the story. One of my Uncles refused to have anything to do with the family he left behind. He didn't answer my letter and it upset me terribly. So if you do find your relative, expect nothing and if you end up getting to know each other and make a relationship then it's a bonus.

Good luck, i hope it goes well

Hi Jean

Sorry for taking so long to get back to you, things have been hectic at mine.

In our family tree i have Richard Foster who was born in 1823 to William Foster and Sarah Tilburn. They married in 1817 in Wilberfoss. Your John could be related to my tree but as yet i have found no connection.

I will have a dig around to see if i can find any proof of who your John Foster's parents were.

Best wishes
