Hmmm....I'm also puzzled by the cap badge (what we can see of it) it does looks like it might have a crown on top, unless it's a mark on the pic. :-\

Can I ask if that's a ..... ( ? can't remember the name  ) Bess rifle ?

I think it's a Lee Enfield.

there was another regiment with sphinx collar dogs ;)

Ah yes! The Manchester's, how could I forget? ;D

The photo is better but I'm still not sure about the regiment....I'll stick with the SWB for now.  :-\

Hi Sussexgirl,

They are men of the Imperial Yeomanry;

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Imperial_Yeomanry

I'm not sure which battalion though, there were quite a few..... :P

For comparison, here's a (rather bad quality) pic of the Worcestershire Yeomanry;

Cheers,

Mick :)

Hi Salty,

As you say, not the best of pics for detail, but I reckon that his collar dogs have a Sphinxy shape about them. The two regiments that I can think of that had Sphinx collar dogs (there might be more tho) were the Lincolnshire Regiment (10th Foot) and the South Wales Borderers (24th Foot).

Of the two , I would go for the 24th Foot, compare with this pic of Henry Hook V.C of Zulu war fame, the only possible difference that I can see is the white trim on the eppaulettes, other than that.....

You might find this book of interest, you should be able to get hold of a copy via the inter-library loan scheme;

I've signed it too!

If no-one has any objections, perhaps this topic could be stickied until the petition is submitted ...just a thought.

What is the QSA?. Is that the casulaty list you consulted?

The QSA is the Queen's South Africa Medal. Copies of the medal rolls can be consulted at the National Archives. The roll for the QSA awarded to men of the 19th Hussars is in series W100/119

Here's some info on the QSA

http://www.stephen-stratford.co.uk/boer_war.htm

I'm not sure what records are held for the 19th Hussars for the dates you need, I can only see regimental records for them up until 1878 ???

If your man was discharged to pension, his records might survive in WO97, the online catalogue for these records is only indexed up to the mid 1850's.

This page has some useful info about the records that were kept by the British Army including those in WO97 - scroll down to Enlisted Men's Service Records;

Good luck,

Mick :)

thanks for your assistance but the links do not lead to any of the items that were on the original reply.

I can't think where I got the information from then? There was only one post by rlaughton on the thread and no mention of the Canadian army before that ???

The links work fine, it's the Canadian site that is slow.

Hi Trees,

Just as a pointer, there is an article in the Times of August 1st 1936 under the heading - Territorial Units' Training

It reports that the final contingents of the Territorial Army are about to leave for annual training (the following day).

It states that 45,000 troops will be in training and goes on to list the various camps around the country that will be involved, Weymouth is listed as one of them and is the only camp in Dorset.

The units at Weymouth Camp were;

The Dorsetshire Heavy Brigade - R.A and Fortress R.E

144th Gloucestershire and Worcestershire Infantry Brigade

48th Divisional R.A.S.C (Royal Army Service Corps)

and the 143rd Field Ambulance.

Not sure if it'll help, but you never know!
