Hi Naomi,

It might be worth contacting the London Fire Brigade Museum, they may have a record of your Great-granddad's service;

I came across his medal card, but have not downloaded it.  Will there be much information?  I have gotten another before, and I was completly confused and it didin't make any sense to me  :-\

What kind of information do you think will be on this one?

Hi Karen,

There is no family info on a medal card. They confirm the medals awarded, rank, number and theatre of war etc.

If you do download it, post the details here and I'm sure that the WW1 experts will be able to decipher it for you. :)

Cheers,

Mick ;)

Thanks to both for your prompt replies.

You're welcome! :)

In 1891 it appears he was in the 19th Hussars, and family tradition has it that he spent several years in India.

The deployment of the 19th Hussars supports the family history;

1882 England: Colchester
1882.07 Egypt
1882 Egypt
1884 Sudan
1888 England:
1889 England: Hounslow
1891.09 at sea
1891 India: Bangalore
1896 Secunderabad

1899 South Africa: Ladysmith

Good luck,

Mick :)

I'm not too sure about IY records, since they were not regular army. Maybe someone else can give you some hints there.

Yes, the records are at the National Archives. :)

Attestation and discharge papers of men who served in the Imperial Yeomanry are in series WO 128. They are arranged in service number order and the registers of service numbers are in WO 129.

The service record gives details of age, place of birth, next of kin and place of enlistment.

It's a shame that rlaughton has decided to delete the info that was posted for you.  >:(

Not to worry, I remember the details.  ;)
