Lancashire / Manchester men and the Boer war-Can you help me?
« on: Tuesday 10 August 04 15:46 BST (UK) »
Hi I'm really hoping that some knowledgeable soul out there might be able to give me a leg up to help me over a big wall that is starting to appear on my genealogical horizon!
For some time now I have been researching my GGrandfather Denis Corlis who was born in Ancoats Manchester in 1878.I have a photograph of him taken in the early 1900s,unfortunately he is not in uniform but he is wearing his medals and it is quite clear that he has the Queen and Kings SA medals(the QSA appears to have 4 possibly 5 clasps which are frustratingly unreadable even when magnified!).I beleive that he grew up in the Bradford area of Manchester(Howarth Street)if this is so and he joined the army to fight in the Boer War,which battalion of the Manchester regiment would he most likely have joined?Did men from a certain district join a particular battalion?
I would be gratefull for any information because as it is I'm at a standstill and I would love to locate his military records and continue my research,
Many thanks,Mick.
