Immigrants & Emigrants - General / Another Ellusive Skelly Daughter!
« on: Saturday 24 May 08 13:28 BST (UK)  »
I wonder if anyone would be able to help me trace another of my elusive Skelly family?  This time it's Janet - who married William Murray Thomson in Irvine, Scotland in 1838 and disappears (as far as I can see!) after the 1861 census.

At that time the family were living at No 1 St Vincent Park, Govan, Glasgow :

William M Thomson, born 1815, Dabry(?), Ayrshire -  an Iron Merchant (in 1851 a Commission Merchant)
Janet Thomson, b1815, Monkton, Ayrshire
Jessie S Thomson, b1843, Govan, Lanarkshire
John Thomson, b1845, Govan - Accountants Clerk
William M Thomson, b1846, Govan
Jane C Thomson, b1849, Govan
Adam S Thomson, b1850, Govan
Robert McG Thomson, b 1853, Govan
David Thomson, b1855, Govan

In 1861 Janet's sister, Margaret and her family were living next door at No. 2 St Vincents Park, but in 1862 they left Scotland aboard the "Helenslee" and emigrated to Queensland, Australia.  This is the link to all the fantastic information that Rootschatters (particularly Ruskie and Karenlee :D :D) have found for me http://www.rootschat.com/forum/index.php/topic,301639.0.html.

Although Robert and William appear to have been in partnership in a shipping company "McGavin and Thomson" I've been unable to find the Thomson's in Australia (or anywhere else for that matter  ???) - mainly by searching Ancestry and the Australian BMD's.

There is a family connection with the island of St Vincent, in that my gt x 3 grandfather Adam Skelly was born there when his father Adam (Janet and Margaret's brother) was there as a Commission Merchant.  I have adverts from McGavin and Thomson for cargo for the barques "Janet Boyd" (named after Adam, Janet and Margaret's mother) and the "Margaret Skelly".  David Boyd, their uncle, appears to have had a business on the island and in his Will left most of his possessions etc. to his nieces and nephews.

Any help with this family would be very welcome  ;)

Thanks,

Janet

Australia Lookups completed / New to Australian Research!
« on: Monday 28 April 08 11:48 BST (UK)  »
Hi,

I've recently discovered that relatives emigrated from Scotland to Australia (http://www.rootschat.com/forum/index.php/topic,300539.0.html) and wondered if anyone can help me with a few questions?

a) is it possible to see Australian BMD indexes after the 1920's?

b) I've tried to find the McGavin family on Australian passenger lists without any success.  I would presume they paid for their own passage as they seem to have been wealthy when in Scotland.  Any suggestions as to how I might find them?

c) Is there any access to Australian census records?  I haven't been able to find any apart from the Electoral rolls 1901-1936.

Scotland / McGavin - any suggestions!??
« on: Tuesday 22 April 08 20:50 BST (UK)  »
Hi, I've been tracing the McGavin family (Robert and Margaret, nee Skelly) and have found them in the 1841, 1851 and 1861 census returns on Ancestry, but after that they seem to disappear - or at least I can't find them!!

Robert was born c1810 in Irvine, Ayrshire and Margaret in 1811 in Monkton Ayrshire.

They have at least seven children, but I can't find a record of any of their births on Scotlandspeople either!!

Robert is listed in 1851 as a Commission Merchant and Shipowner, and in 1861 as a Merchant and JP.  I googled him and found two references to investigions into shipping accidents that were looked into by "Robert McGavin, JP for Forfar" - so wondered if this could be him.

Does anyone have any ideas about how I can trace this family any further?  I've tried searching for variations of McGavin but with no luck.

I'm running out of ideas!!

Ayrshire / Skelly Family of Laigh, Monktonhill
« on: Sunday 20 April 08 16:37 BST (UK)  »
Hi,  I wonder if anyone can help me to find death details for any of my Skelly family?

I've found baptisms on Scotlandspeople for 8 Skelly siblings at "Monkton and Prestwick", (also on the IGI), and would like to find out when they died.

They are the children of John Skelly Junr (Farmer) and Jannet Boyd of Laigh, Monktonhill:-

John b 12.10.1803 (presumably died before 1809)
Adam b 24.2.1805 (I know he died in London in 1842)
James b 1.5.1806 (presumably died before 1812)
David b 26.4.1808
John b 10.9.1809
Margaret b 10.3.1811 (married Robert McGavin in 1835)
James b 17.6.1812
Jannet b 8.10.1815 (married William Murray Thomson in 1838)

I have a will for an uncle dated 1827 who mentions Adam, John, Margaret and Jannet so I'm also presuming that David and James had died before then.

Any suggestions as to how to find out about their deaths would be very useful.

Thanks,

Janet

Denbighshire Lookup Requests / Jones' of Bontuchel/Ruthin
« on: Sunday 03 February 08 18:12 GMT (UK)  »
Hi,  I wonder if anyone can help me?  This is a bit of a long story, but I'm stuck on my Jones' around 1828.

My gt gt grandfather was Edward Jones, b1828 in Llanferrog or Ruthin (depending on which census you look at).  He married Ann Jones (b1827 in Caenarvon) in Liverpool in 1848.  Edward's father on his marriage cert is John Jones, a Blacksmith.

I have a scribbled piece of paper where my mum (b1927)  has written some notes after talking to an aunt of hers (b1892), and the name Bontuchel is mentioned, together with "Wesleyan church".  By coincidence, while researching my family tree I've made contact with a 3rd cousin, who was told a tale that whenever one of their Jones relatives got married they went on honeymoon with the whole family to ..... Bontuchel!!  We think they went to stay with cousins.

This note also says "Gt grandfather Jones, Rhewl, buried in Ruthin, Florida Street".

We're planning a trip over to Ruthin to the records office at some point, but I just wondered if anyone could point us in a particular direction in our searching.  We would be looking for information on Edward's siblings and parents, although as yet I don't know what his mother's name was.  Any help/advice would be gratefully received!!

Thanks,

Janet
