Perthshire / 1819 or 1820
« on: Thursday 01 August 13 13:44 BST (UK)  »
I found the birth of Alexander McLash Harris in Dron Newburgh Parish and in the margin of the entry first the surname Harris appears, then the date Jan 2

then the text reads:
Alexander McLash son to James Harris and Elizabeth McGrigor was born and baptized on the 23rd instant

Does this mean that he was born in December 1819? Or that he was born and baptized on the same day, namely 23 December 1819, and that the minister didn't make the entry until 2 January 1820?

Any advice?

The Common Room / Chief Woman Officer Admiralty
« on: Wednesday 10 July 13 10:57 BST (UK)  »
I just discovered that Lillie Margaret Simpson Wilson was Chief Woman Officer in the Admiralty.

I have no clue what it is she did, what would this entail? Can anyone help please?

I think she died in Bath in 1944 when she was70 years old, so she will have been retired before that. What was the role of a woman officer?

London & Middlesex Lookup Requests / Edward T Bell
« on: Tuesday 02 July 13 12:28 BST (UK)  »
I am helping a friend finding her great grandfather. I found him on the 1881 Census in London where he is listed with his mother Ann and daughter Lena Alice Mary born 1880. There seems to be nobody else living in the household.

I see that he's also on the 1871 census with his mother Ann, but that is all the info I can see..

What I wonder is if there's a father listed in 1871 and what his profession is.

They live at 86, Tachbrook St, St George Hanover Square.

Edward T Bell was born in Dublin 1848 and Ann Bell, his mother, in 1825 in Great Oakley in Essex.

Thanks for any help

The Common Room / What does Honourable stand for?
« on: Wednesday 23 January 13 12:45 GMT (UK)  »
I have a newspaper article from 1879 about a wedding in Dundee.

The guests include the honourable Mr and Mrs Sutherland of Berkley Square, London, Mr Sutherland is also the Consul General in this country for Liberia. I am trying to locate him, as he appears to be a cousin of the groom.

But does the title mean anything and how could I use it to track down this elusive Honourable man?

Angus (Forfarshire) / and another untraceable Wilson
« on: Wednesday 16 January 13 12:01 GMT (UK)  »
I am also looking for Ralph Alexander Wilson, born 9 April 1878 in Broughty Ferry as the son of William Brown Wilson and Ann Isabella Wilson.

He stayed with his aunt Agnes Anderson in Elgin 1891 and was visiting Elgin Academy and in 1901 the 22 year old is in Edinburgh, at 32 Chalmers Street, St Cuthberts. He's listed as a visitor, but it's not clear who he is visiting.

I then found the following info online:

Wilson, Ralph Alexander, MA, Indian CS (assist commr Central Prov) Educated at High School Dundee and Edinburgh University, appointed after exam 1901, arrived 17th November 1902 and served in the Central Prov as assist commr

Ralph Alexander Wilson, assist commr and Regr Judl Comm Court Central Province

But that is it, I can't find him anywhere else - so again the question is: where do I go from here? And what on earth does Regr Judl Comm Court Central Province mean?

Angus (Forfarshire) / Where do I go from here?

William Wilson is the son of William Brown Wilson and Ann Isabella Wilson, born 1876 in Dundee. I found the following information on him:

Cemetery: East Finchley Cemetery And St. Marylebone Crematorium

Country: England
Area: Middlesex
Rank: Captain
Official Number:
Unit: 1st Bn. Scots Guards.
Force: Army
Nationality: British

Details:
4th February 1919. Age 43. Son of William B. and Annie I. Wilson of 8 Balzille (should be Balgillo) Terrace Broughty Ferry Forfarshire; husband of E. M. Wilson or Norton of Germiston South Africa. G. II. 224.

But I can't find him in any army records and I tried Germiston, South Africa but had no luck either. It seems strange that he was buried in the UK but doesn't appear as a regular army person. Or have I missed something? He is an indirect line, but I would love to have more information on him and of course his wife E M Norton.

Moray (Elginshire) / I really hate myself for being sloppy
« on: Sunday 06 January 13 16:48 GMT (UK)  »
In 2008 I posted about grants of Grant's Green in Elgin

I have been looking for the birth of Lewis Anderson for ages and now I found him in a Baptist Magazine which says that he was the 4th son of James Anderson, born in 1783 in Kinnedar.  The Anderson were farmers in Kinnedar and his ancestors had been living there for several generations.

I then left that research because the Andersons are only indirectly related. Today I started to look them up again and I find that I lost the information of that Baptist magazine :(

I really hate myself for being so sloppy - I have googled the terms anderson - baptist and elgin for hours now, but all I come across is my own post in rootschat  :'(

Moray (Elginshire) / Separate registers for Baptists?
« on: Saturday 05 January 13 15:36 GMT (UK)  »
I have been looking for registers for the Anderson family of Elgin for years and only today did I spot that they were Baptists, well at least one of them was - he appears in a directory as a member of the Baptist church.

Would that mean that they may not appear in the traditional parish records?

Occupation Interests / what exactly did a wood turner or turner do?
« on: Saturday 05 January 13 13:49 GMT (UK)  »
One of my ancestors was a turner or wood turner.

Now I understand woodturning, hubbie used to have a lathe years ago, and he turned wooden heads for golfclubs. But I cannot figure out what exactly the profession of woodturner implies.

He isn't a joiner or carpenter - so what does he turn, who uses his products and what are they?

May sound silly but my mind is just drawing a blank here.
