Lanarkshire / Glasgow schools - could you choose where to go?
« on: Thursday 03 October 13 14:53 BST (UK)  »
I have a story that Harry Harris born in 1902, who lived at 136 Saltmarket went to the Elder school at Langlands Road. That's some 3.5 miles away and seems quite a trek. Apparently he was a very bright boy, won a lot of ducs, but the family couldn't afford college fees so he started work as an apprentice butcher when he was 15 years old.

So I wonder why he would have gone to a school so far away. Were you free to go where you wanted in those days? Was the Elder school more a High School than a primary? Does anybody know?

Lanarkshire / Baths attendant in Calton Glasgow?? Steamies?
« on: Wednesday 02 October 13 16:07 BST (UK)  »
James Harris was a Baths attendant in Glasgow in 1917. He lived in Calton district, Graeme Street, close to the Saltmarket, so I assume that the Baths were nearby.

For a while I kind of imagined a public swimming pool, but today I realised that this is probably all wrong. Does anybody know where the baths may have been and what his job would have been and would there have been a steamie at this location?

Any help much appreciated

Lanarkshire / Dean of guild inspector a building inspector?
« on: Sunday 25 August 13 13:38 BST (UK)  »
One of the people in the family tree, David Elder, was a Dean of Guild Inspector in Glasgow between 1930 and 1950.

He was a joiner by trade. Am I correct in assuming that he was some sort of building inspector? What would the modern equivalent of his job be? Or is it still the same?

Anyone know what his duties may have been?

Thanks

Angus (Forfarshire) / Was being a railway porter a good job?
« on: Wednesday 21 August 13 10:26 BST (UK)  »
One of my ancestors, James Baxter, was working as a Railway Porter in Dundee in 1851 and 1861 according to the census.

He also had a small grocery shop which he started around 1855.

I wonder if being a Railway Porter was a good job and whether or not it paid well. Would it have been better than working in one of the jute mills?

Does anyone have any ideas?

« on: Wednesday 21 August 13 09:45 BST (UK)  »
I am looking for the birth (and the parents) of Edward Thomas Bell.

According to his military records he was born in St Anne's, Northampton in 1821, but they don't have any further details.

Thanks

The Common Room / How did they travel in 1841
« on: Monday 05 August 13 14:55 BST (UK)  »
How would a couple with little money and a newborn baby have traveled from Kendal in Westmoreland to Perth in Scotland in 1841.

I don't think the rail tracks were finished then. So did they walk or take a coach?

Angus (Forfarshire) / Am I reading too much into this?
« on: Sunday 04 August 13 10:52 BST (UK)  »
I found the death of Margaret Buchan Harris in 1911, which was reported by her daughter Sarah.

I was surprised though that Alexander Harris doesn't appear as her father, only as the husband of her mother.

I am unable to find the birth of Margaret in Auchterarder in 1846 on Scotlandspeople, the births of her siblings Jane 1843, Alexander 1848 also in Auchterarder are not registered either. I tried searching under every permutation I could think of, including just first names.

Is it possible that for instance Margaret was not the daughter of Alexander Harris, or do you reckon that the informer just messed things up?

The Common Room / value of money
« on: Saturday 03 August 13 16:35 BST (UK)  »
I know it has been asked before, but I am unable to find previous posts or links.

Alexander Harris said in 1876 that he could earn 25 shilling. I am not certain if this was per week or whatever, but the only tools I find to calculate value use pounds, so that is no help to me.

And as I am a non Brit I have no idea whatsoever how many shilling and pence went into a pound.

Can any one please help
