An ex boyfriend of mine was a Sapper. He said the word 'Sapper' came from the Latin, meaning, 'to dig'. He was very, very proud of the Royal Engineers.

Thanks again Heather and yet another spelling variation.

Caroline died in her early thirties and is buried in the catholic section of a Sheffield cemetery. Teresa died at 21 and is also buried there. I think at least on of them is listed as BINNEY.

Angelo lived worked as a Pupil Teacher, at the Telegraph Office and as a solicitor's clerk, he had three daughters. Sophia had quite a few children, married a PINDER who died shortly after and went on to have several more children named PINDER, presumably by 'immaculate conception' ;)

Austin, my 2 x great grandfather married in Nottingham in 1870 and had ten children, but sadly only four survived to adulthood, one being my great grandfather who died aged 50 of pernicious anaemia. :(

Hi Heather,

There is indeed and she is 'my' Caroline. I have a copy of her birth certificate. The list of misspelling is quite imaginative.

Thanks for your help.

I've Googled 'Prazzoni' and its listed as a name, but I can't find anyone with the name Prazzoni on Ancestry. :(

Hi Mo,

That is so disappointing. I don't know how I'm ever going to find the names of Giovanni or Sophia's parents especially with all the spelling mistakes. I know there are no records of passengers from Ireland to England, but do you think there would be entries from Italy to England for Giovanni?

Maybe the witness names might help. :/

Thanks again.

Hi Gortonboy,

Sorry, initially I didn't see your posts. Yes, those are almost certainly Giovanni and Sophia's children. I had no idea about the boy named John and I have always been surprised that I hadn't found more children.

I've made the presumption that neither parent could read, which would explain the anomalies on surname spellings.

Thanks for you help.

Hi Mo,

You're amazing, I'm convinced that's them! I've seen their name spelt in so many different ways and Giovanni went by the name of John for quite a while. They eventually settled in Sheffield and he had a couple of 'Plaster Figure Maker' shops and it wasn't until he seems established that he reverted back to Giovanni.

Below is an extract from the 1841 census, they're back in Liverpool, I assume that when they both came to England, from Italy and Ireland, that they would disembark in Liverpool. Caroline was born in the Ancoats area of Manchester so I they may have been following work.

"Sophia Benney
Age:    30
Estimated Birth Year:    abt 1811
Gender:    Female
Where born:    Ireland

Civil Parish:    Liverpool
Hundred:    Liverpool

Sophia Benney    30
Caroline Benney    2

Mo, does the marriage record say anything about the names of the father's of my relatives please? Do you know whether there's any way I can find out more about Sophia and Giovanni's background as I've hit dead ends with both of them and I've not managed to get further back.

Thank you, so much.

Michelle :)

Lancashire / Lancashire Marriage Help Please?
« on: Monday 29 July 13 00:02 BST (UK)  »
Hi Rootschatters,

I need help/guidance or something please.

I am looking for the marriage of my 3 x great grandparents, but I think they may have been married before 1837 and there are numerous spelling anomalies with this Irish-Italian couple. How might I find a marriage please? I'm guessing its in Lancashire somewhere as the births of the first two children are in Manchester and Liverpool respectively.

This is what I know (I think ;)) :

Giovanni BINI (b.1804, Lucca Italy d. Sheffield 1870)

Sophia KENNY (b.1810 Dublin Ireland d. Sheffield 1869)

First child, Caroline born Manchester - 1838 (birth cert.lists as surname BENI)

Second child Teresa born Liverpool - 1840  (Baptism record on Ancestry has parents as Johannes BINI and Sophia CHIENI - do baptisms list mother's maiden name or were they not in fact married as stated on Caroline birth cert? I don't think either could spell due to the variations of spelling BINI and KENNY)

Third child Angelo George born Wolverhampton 1843 (listed as surname BENEY)

Fourth child Sophia, according to census records born Sheffield 1845, no idea how they are spelling the surname this time, but they settled in Sheffield.

Fifth child (my 2 X G. Grandfather) Austin b. Sheffield 1952, no idea on surname spelling when he was born, this info is taken from Censuses.

I'd appreciate any help.

Thank you.
