Glamorganshire Completed Lookups / James Davis Ebbw Vale Completed
« on: Saturday 24 February 07 04:33 GMT (UK)  »
Hello,

I have been researching my grandmother's family in Wales with mixed success.

His grandfather is James Davis or Davies who was born in Ebb Vale c 1841 he married Sarah Parry in 1861.

They lived in Cardiff and can be found there on the 1871, 1881, 1891 census'.

They had 8 children between 1863 & 1879. (source IGI)

His eldest son William Henry James  Davi/es is my grandmother's father.

I would like to know who James parents were and if he had any siblings. My grandmother claimed Clara Novello daivies the renowned singer/conductor as her aunt whom she had trained under to be an opera singer. I would like to prove or disprove this connection and lay it to rest.

Any inforamtion will be welcomed.

Thanks for the two suggestions. I have been researching immigration lists for years and teh number of Emms Hemms Elms Emmes etc is very limited in the years I am looking at.

Another researcher is visiting teh records office in Sydeny (Ilive 7 hours from Sydney) and we ahd not found the two convicts mentioned. I will be in Sydney in MArch and will look up the references and see what I can discover.

Kincardineshire / Re: Gordons of Bervie
« on: Saturday 24 February 07 04:00 GMT (UK)  »
Thankyou for your offer.

I had gatherd the names you mention from the IGI but had no real documentation to support my inclusion of Thomas Gordon and Jean Longmuir and John Webster and Catherine Allardice in my tree, although I suspected they were the correct names.

I have been corresponding with an Allerdice researcher who is following another line but could not help me clarify anything re the Gordons.

Any inforamtion is helpful either supportive or eliminating my research.

regards

Thankyou for your response.

From his father's death certificate  in July 1870 James was listed as being 46 years old. This would mean his est dob 1823-1825.

He was still alive in 1895 when his son wrote to the police in Victoria.

I have no information on his wife at all.

The information on his children was obtained from 2 sources

1. The letter written by George and
2. A newspaper report on the death of a Gerald Clifford Marjerroson  26/12/1916 in Smith Falls Ontario.

His coffin was carried by his cousins George Arnold and Robert Arnold who were conductors on the CPR.
(George Arnold wrote in his letter that he was a conductor on the GTR.)

Clifford had a sisters Pearl and HAzel. HE was born 23/6/1893.

Genni,

This might very well be him!! He was born in 1832 so the age would be correct.

How did you locate his entry? I tried all sorts of wildcard searches but did not find him.

Any information you could pick up for me would be good.

Thanks

Cumberland / Isaac Olcorn or Oldcorn
« on: Friday 23 February 07 05:49 GMT (UK)  »
Isaac was born in Castle Sowerby in August 1831. Parents Thomas Oldcorn and Margaret Thompson.

He came to Australia before 1862 where he was married twice and had 16 children!!!!

His siblings were William 1832, Frances (1) 1834, Jane 1835, Sarah 1837, Thomas 1838, Frances (2) 1840, Margaret 1841, and possibly John1846 and Ann 1847. Source IGI.

The same naming pattern is apparent in his children. I would like to find any desecendants of his siblings in the UK.

Isaac was born in Castle Sowerby Cumberland in 1831 and arrived in Australi abefore 1862 when he married Anne Roddy in Melbounre.

His family say he travelled under an assujed name possibly Melbourne but we cannot find any likely candidates.

Does anyone have any suggestions of what to do to find his arrival?
