The Common Room / Birth doesn't appear to be registered
« on: Wednesday 31 August 11 16:04 BST (UK)  »
Hi, Tricky one this and I know only certain information can be given as some of the people involved are still living but if anyone can help I would appreciate it.

I am trying to find out why I can't find a birth registered in 1950. Information from the mother said the child was born in the first quarter of the year but I searched these records this morning and there is no sign of it.

The baby was born in a home and was given up for adoption or so we are led to believe.  Is it possible that the baby was given to new parents unofficially and it was never registered?  Was this possible seeing as the baby was born in an unmarried mothers home? I was told that the birth mother had the baby for six weeks prior to adoption and she said she knew the adopted parents name which I thought was unusual as I thought these things were kept confidential in regards to where the baby went?

If anyone can help or wants more information they can PM me please.

Thank you

Alan

Cheshire / Celia's job
« on: Monday 25 October 10 14:09 BST (UK)  »
I have just been to the library to try my hand at our late friend Celia's job of looking up burials in Rake lane Cemetery for a gentleman in Malta. It isn't too difficult providing you know the religion and rough year.  What I was surprised at was that it cost to look.  Only 60p but the amount Celia looked up must have cost her a fair bit over the years.  Did she ever ask for money or was it out of the goodness of her heart?  I think it was the latter and she kept quiet. RIP dear lady.

The Common Room / Celia - Sad News
« on: Saturday 09 October 10 12:51 BST (UK)  »
Does anyone know what has happened to our regular poster Celia?  She hasn't posted since July and that isn't like her at all.

Sorry if this is in the wrong place.

Cheshire Lookup Offers / War Grave Photographs Wirral
« on: Thursday 22 July 10 22:35 BST (UK)  »
I have been photographing war graves on the Wirral.  These include church grounds as well as cemeteries.  As well as the usual "official" headstones, I have collected many private memorial photo's including mentions of deaths where the deceased is buried somewhere else, e.g. Killed in action buried in ** France.

If anyone would like a copy of a relatives grave photo please PM me and I will see if it is in my collection. If not and you know the cemetery where they are buried I will gladly try and find it to take a photo.

Hope this works. Not a lot to go on with there being no badges, collar dogs etc but can it possibly be dated? Was taken in Folkstone. Strange flap thing on shoulder or was this normal?

Cheshire / Independent means but no will
« on: Tuesday 14 October 08 11:41 BST (UK)  »
Hi

I am researching a family of corn brokers. They were described as being of independent means or similar on the 1891 census.  The wife died in 1891 and the husband in 1894.

I have tried to trace a will but there is nothing listed. Would their family just have taken what was left and divided it up assuming that they got on or what?  Virtually all the offspring had emigrated to South America when they died.

From what I can gather for some strange reason they were not living at the same address between 1891 and 1894 although they were staunch Catholics and are buried together. One theory being that the husband was in some kind of care home as he was in his eighties.  Not bad for 1894 I suppose?

His name, John Curtain Daly.  Died at West Seacombe Terrace.  Seacombe. Wallasey.  Now Percy road.

Her name, Catherine Daly.  Died at Marymount (family home for many years) Mill lane. Wallasey.  This later became Marymount convent.

One of their grandsons, Peter Denis Daly survived the Titanic disaster.  http://www.encyclopedia-titanica.org/titanic-biography/peter-dennis-daly.html

Lancashire / Smith's how to?
« on: Thursday 24 April 08 10:15 BST (UK)  »
Hi,

A lady I am interested in married a man called Smith.  I tried the BMD of Lancashire and Cheshire to see if I could trace any offspring but only in rare cases does it list mothers maiden name and the Cheshire one doesn't list any.

The ladies maiden name was Florence E Middlebrook and she married Smith in 1938.  Is there another way of trying to track down offspring?

Thanks

Lancashire / Reference Library Liverpool
« on: Tuesday 15 April 08 16:21 BST (UK)  »
Is anyone going to the central library in Liverpool during the next few days and would be prepared to look at two addresses on the voters register for me? I have the year and the addresses, just need to know what names were there at the time.

It's fairly urgent and I just can't get over there myself at the moment.  I was told I could do it on line but I can't find a way unless someone can point me in the right direction please.

PM me if you can help.

Many thanks.
