Have also just found the marriage of Samuel Clift & Louisa Rackley in Totnes District Qtr 3 1934.
I knew he married a Louisa but I did not know her surname.
Through the Clifts you are also descended from the Vittery family of Brixham. The Vitterys were Quay Lords shipowners mariners etc and I have got back on the Vittery tree (with a lot of help from other researchers) to about 1673.
I can try to take a look at the Rackley side too if you need any help.  I am a member of the ancestry site and it has been worth every penny to me - there is so much information on it.
Looking forward to hearing from you.
If we can communicate off the forum I can email some photos and other information over to you if you wish

Well you have certainly made a connection now ! As soon as I saw the name Ruth - it twigged ! Yes we are related.  We are both descended from John Clift and Jane Lark married in Marhamchurch Cornwall in 1798. Without going into masses of detail, John's son John born in 1802 moved to Plymouth, his son John born 1833 in Plymouth married a Brixham girl - Mary Trist. John and Mary had 10 children, I am descended from their son Samuel Edward Vittery Clift born 1873 and you are descended from John & Mary's son John William Clift born 1875. John Wms son Samuel married Louisa (Rackley you tell me).  I have made contact with a Pam Gardiner(nee Clift) who lives in Brixham who told me about Doreen, Ruth & David. Pam is Doreen's first cousin.
Dates for you- Ruth E Clift born Qtr3 1939 5b 275  and Louisa Clift died Qtr 3 1944 5b 125.
We must chat off forum as we have a lot of information to share. I also have a few photos of the Clifts - John Wm b 1875

On a more sombre note I believe there are a number of Anzac graves in the Torquay town cemetery.

Dear Marlene
Were you able to find out where your relatives may have been commemorated or buried?
I visit the Torbay area most years and would be pleased to try to find the graves or plaques and take a photo for you which I can email over. Did the cwgc site say where they were remembered - it usually does

Both myself and a number of other Vittery descendants are tracing the Vittery tree. Over the internet we have managed to find almost somebody from each branch of the Vittery tree. Lt France married Ann Vittery and we have the Vittery tree going back to about 1673 with the marriage of William Vittery and Alles Laverance. I guess we have it coming forward too as we have found several present day descendants.  If you have an interest in Ann Vittery please let us know.

I have just found
David S Clift born Qtr 2 1935 Totnes 5b 215  and Doreen L Clift born Qtr 2 1938 both with mother's maiden name Rackley.
Are these your relatives ?
Do you know by any chance roughly when Samuel & Louisa married and how many children they may have had?
It would also be helpful if you know Samuel's or Louisa's parents names and then I may be able to get farther back
regards
Carol

I have just found the message you posted in Sep 2006 about the Clift family of Brixham. I changed my email address  last year so any posts obviously could not get through.
Can you let me have any more information about your grand mother
What was her name ?
Is a birth date of 1936 just a guess or do you have an exact date ?
Was she born in Brixham ?
Did she have any brothers or sisters that you know of ?
Older or younger ?  Where born ?
Let me have any other info you have and I will do my best to help.
Don't worry if you don't know - we can still try with what you have.
Clift is a rare name and I am sure there will be a connection.
My Clift's moved from Marhamchurch in Cornwall, onto Plymouth and then one son moved on to Brixham.  My grandfather Samuel Edward Vittery Clift was born in Brixham in 1873, his father John was born in Plymouth.
Look forward to hearing from you.

Cheshire Completed Lookup Requests / Re: 1851 Lookup Knowles in Bollington
« on: Sunday 11 March 07 23:56 GMT (UK)  »
Dear Pauline
I have just come across your post in 2005 about the Knowles family of Bollington, Cheshire.  I am also very interested in them and have been taking a close look at them this evening.  On the 1861 Census as well as the widowed Mary Knowles and her family, also in the household at Water Street on that night is Ralph Knowles, widower aged 67 'lodger'. Ralph Knowles is my gggg grandfather. He married Mary Pheasey in Bakewell in 1815 and later moved to Macclesfield (close to Bollington).  Mary died in 1858.  Although Ralph is listed merely as a lodger, I strongly suspect that he was in fact Mary Knowles (head of household)  brother in law.  I believe that Mary's husband Robert who was also from Bakewell may have been Ralph's brother.  Robert Knowles m. Mary Matkin in 1813 in Bakewell and they had numerous children born in Bakewell, Derbyshire and Youlgreave, Derbyshire, later moving to Bollington.  There is a Joseph Knowles of Bakewell who married a Dorothy Matkin in 1816 and they also moved to Bollington, Cheshire. I suspect that Joseph may be another brother of Ralph and Robert. When Ralph Knowles died in 1870, a person named Hamilton registered the death.  I have found two marriages in Bakewell, in 1822, where a Jane Knowles married a Jonathan Hamilton and a Rebecca Knowles married a Daniel Hamilton(Daniel Hamilton later moved to Macclesfield).  I think Jane and Rebecca may be sisters of Ralph, Robert and Joseph. Hope you can reply - Carol
