Do not ask for look-ups from commercial sources.
Most commercial sources have strict 'Terms of Use', which forbid publishing their data elsewhere, so asking for such look-ups is also asking people to ignore the 'Terms of Use'.

Ayrshire / Descendants of Duncan Rankin and Mary Olinda Debrix in Ardrossan, Ayrshire
« on: Thursday 05 December 13 11:32 GMT (UK)  »
I'm interesting is investigating the descendants of Duncan Rankin (b about 1865 in Paisley, Renfrewshire, I think) and Mary Olinda Debrix (b dec. qtr. 1863 in Liverpool). They married in Jun. Qtr. 1889 in West Derby, Liverpool, but are later found on the census in Ardrossan, Ayrshire, where they seem to have had 4 children :

Elizabeth Froude Rankin, b 25 avr. 1890.
Margaret (Maggie) Lander Rankin, b 10 juil. 1891.
Mary Gibson Rankin, b 06 janv. 1893.
John Rankin, b 28 août 1896 and I think died on 26 déc. 1918 in Brindisi, Italy.

I found a possible marriage for Mary Gibson Rankin to John Baird on 23 nov. 1923 with the place "Pladda View Titchfield Troon". (Would that mean Titchfield road, Troon?). Ideally, I would prefer to look for the descendants of Elizabeth Froude Rankin, because I imagine the eldest daughter would most likely have inherited family items and it is the Froude's that interest me. (Mary Olinda's mother was Elizabeth Froude, sister of my great grand-mother.)

Some of the above information was obtained from www.ayrshire-roots.co.uk.

Can anyone advise me as to the best way to go forward with this? I have no experience doing family history research in Scotland. Do I need to go to www.scotlandspeople.gov.uk? Ideally, I would like to trace a living descendant of this family, but perhaps that's too much to hope for.

Thank you,

Alan

Ayrshire / Rankin in Ardossan, Ayrshire
« on: Tuesday 15 November 11 15:44 GMT (UK)  »
I've done quite a bit of family history research, but I realize that I've never had to search for anyone in Scotland before. However, my indirect ancestor Mary Elinda Debrix (Devereux) married one Duncan Rankin from Paisley, Renfrewshire, in 1889 in Liverpool (West Derby) and they subsequently moved to Ardossan, Ayrshire and had 4 children there between 1890 and 1897. My question is what would be the best way to go about trying to trace their descendents, as I am totally unfamiliar with the records from this part of the country. Are there any freely accessible birth and marriage records?  Many thanks, Alan

Lancashire / county of Liverpool C.B.
« on: Thursday 13 October 11 08:25 BST (UK)  »
Could someone tell me what the "County of Liverpool C.B." is? This appears on my mother's birth certificate (1926). Is "County of Liverpool" an old appellation for Lancashire or something more local? What does the C.B. stand for? Sorry for my ignorance.

Many thanks,

Alan

Wexford / Thomas O'Brien of Enniscorthy
« on: Tuesday 04 January 11 13:57 GMT (UK)  »
I was hoping to find the birth record of Thomas O'Brien born in Enniscorthy, County of Wexford, on 12th March, 1789 or 1799 to parents Jean or John O'Brien and Marguerite or Margaret Read. The christian names I have are from their French marriage document, as Thomas married Marie-Thérèse Félicité Vanvincq in Boulogne-sur-Mer, France, on 5th August 1828.

There appears to be some discrepancy in this marriage document as it states that Thomas was born on 12th March, 1789 but that he is 29 years old at the time in 1828, whereas he would have been about 39 years old if he was indeed born in 1789. (It might well be that he was born in 1799, as the error would be between writing mille sept cent quatre vingt neuf and mille sept cent quatre vingt dix neuf, i.e. forgetting to write the "dix".)

As I have absolutely no experience in looking for records in this part of Ireland or, indeed, in Ireland at all, I was wondering if someone could point me in the direction of any resources that might be available, as I have not so far come up with anything seemingly useful.

Many thanks.

World War One / Look up request for W. Payne
« on: Friday 06 August 10 17:26 BST (UK)  »
There is a W. Payne listed on the www.cwgc.org website at http://www.cwgc.org/search/casualty_details.aspx?casualty=107834 with the regimental number of WR/253717. He was a corporal in the 271st Railway Company of the Royal Engineers and died on 23/02/1919.

Unfortunately, I cannot find him in the Soldiers Died in the Great War database (or any other database) on Ancestry, but I believe this has some errors in it.

Would someone be able to look him up in the CD version (or any other resource available).

I can't think why I didn't see him before as I am seeking a Corporal Walter Payne who died around that time, I thought in France, although this one is not far away in Belgium, I think. However, I don't know if this one is a Walter or not at this point.

Thanks,

Alan

World War One / Mont de Violettes in NESLES, Pas-de-Calais, France
« on: Wednesday 19 May 10 14:04 BST (UK)  »
Does anyone have any information or know how one would go about finding information on a rest camp at Mont de Violettes in Nesles, Pas-de-Calais, France, at which soldiers were given respite (or there was perhaps some kind of hospital) before going to the front?

I am trying to trace an ancestor, Walter Payne, who was a British or Canadian solider, and who was stationed at this place in the middle of 1918. It would be of interest, for example, to be able to determine which units might have been stationed there during the period of time.

Any help or advice would be appreciated.

Thanks,

Alan

Warwickshire / Walter Thomas Payne of Hockley, Warwick
« on: Thursday 18 February 10 14:52 GMT (UK)  »
I am trying to identify one Walter Thomas Payne, who died in September 1918 in France while serviing in WW1. According to the entry in the Soldiers Died in the Great War database, he was born in Hockley, Warwick and enlisted in Handsworth, Staffs. The problem is that I do not know exactly how old he was or when he was born.

(In fact, he was a bombardier with the Royal Field Artillery, 36th Div. Ammunition Column, Territorial Force, reg. n°s 2434 and 810748, and I have the medal cards and other military information. I have not been able to find his service records.)

My questions are :

If he gave his birthplace as Hockley, Warwick, would this be the town or district in the northwest part of Birmingham?

Would he then have perhaps been baptized at the All Saints Church, assuming he was C of E?

Are the parish registers for this (or other) church(es) in Hockley available?

Does anyone have any other suggestions as to how I could track him down?

Many thanks,

Alan

World War One / Walter Payne
« on: Wednesday 23 December 09 13:49 GMT (UK)  »
I am pursuing several avenues of research to identify Walter Payne, a soldier who died in France in WW1 probably in 1918 and whose photo (http://picasaweb.google.com/absillitoe/WalterPayne?feat=directlink (probably taken in 1918) has already given an abundance of information thanks to this forum. I would just like to rephrase more simply a couple of questions I have at the moment.

(1) I came across a Walter Thomas Payne, service number 810748, who according to the CWGC website was a bombardier in the Royal Field Artillery, died on 08/09/1918 and was buried in the Bertenacre Miltary Cemetry in Fletre, which is the right area of France in the right period of time. I thought at first that this was a good match because, in the photo, Walter has two stripes or chevrons, however it appears that a bombardier would only have had 1 stripe in 1918. Can anyone confirm this? Is there any chance this could nevertheless be him?

(2) It appears that Walter must have been in or around Boulogne-Sur-Mer in France in June/July 1918. How can I find out which "units" were in this area at that time? Would they have been in one place for some time or moving around quite a bit?

Many thanks,

Alan
