Cumberland / George RICHMOND, born on 5 November 1707 in Crosscanonby
« on: Sunday 07 May 17 07:47 BST (UK)  »
I offered to help a French acquaintance  with some genealogical research in England, but I didn't realize how far he had already gotten back already.

According to the information he sent me, he is descended from George RICHMOND, born on 5 November 1707 in Crosscanonby, Cumberland, who married Marie Elizabeth BALLE (or BALLET), a French lady, on 9 April 1744, at the church of Saint Martin in Bergues, northern France.

It appears that George was a carpenter living in Bergues in 1741, but was running some kind of tavern (he was a Cabaretier) in 1743.

It appears that the RICHMOND family might have been Catholic, as there was at least one Catholic priest of this name amongst his indirect ancestors.

Does anyone have any idea what might have caused George to emigrate to France and how I could find his birth record?

I will put a similar post in the Ayrshire, Scotland, forum, as his father, Georges RICHMOND, was born there on 20 December, 1681, but came down to Crosscanonby, where he married Hanna PHANACKER (born in 1680 in Crosscanonby) on 18 October 1707. This is as far as his research goes, and he would like to trace it back further if possible.

Thank you,

Alan

Monmouthshire / Adelaide Mary Weeks (b Abt. 1874 in Goytrey, Monmouthshire)
« on: Saturday 07 January 17 19:33 GMT (UK)  »
On 20 Mar 1899, William Levi Frier, born in 1877 in Alcester, Warwickshire, England, married Adelaide Mary Weeks (or Weekes), born about 1874 in Goytrey, Monmouthshire, England.

Adelaide is to be found on the 1881 and 1891 censuses with her family. Her parents are William Weeks, born Abt. 1842 in Brecknockshire, Wales, and Margaret James, born Abt. 1842 in Carmarthen, Carmarthenshire, Wales. They married in 1867 in Newport, Monmouthshire, Wales.

Their first two children, Margaretta Louisa Weeks (b 1867) and Elizabeth Ann Weeks (b 1869) are to be found on the censuses and one finds their births in the GRO index with mother's maiden name James, born in Goytrey, Monmouthshire, England. The fifth child, Alfred David Wheedon Weeks (b Pontypool, Monmouthshire) is also to be found in the GRO index with mother's maiden name James, which suggests that Margaret Weeks, née James, is still alive and well.

However, I cannot find any records of the births of the 3rd and 4th children, respectively, Adelaide Mary Weeks (b Abt. 1874) and William Weeks (b Abt. 1876), both in Goytrey, Monmouthshire, England according to the census records.

There are a couple of possible William's born in Pontypool at about the right time, but with different mother's surnames (Robins and Carpenter), but I can't find any record of a birth of Adelaide, who is the person I am particularly interested in!

I'm wondering if anyone has any idea what might be going on here?

The reason I'm interested in Adelaide is that I'm trying to trace this family line forward in time. They seem to have had one daughter, Victoria Adelaide Frier (b 1901 in New Inn, Pontypool, Monmouthshire). However, I cannot find any trace of them after that.

Other Countries / India - Calcutta (Kolkata) birth in 1929
« on: Saturday 07 May 16 10:19 BST (UK)  »
This is the first time I've looked for birth records in India, so I'm a bit lost. I was thinking I'd have to go to the British Library to get the birth record below :

First names : Maria Theresa Olga
Surname : Martins
Year Of Birth : 1929
Place of birth : Calcutta, Bow Bazar, St Francis Xavier, Bengal, India

However, I just realised that Findmypast seems to have it. Can someone tell me if a subscription would give me access to the whole record or do they in any case only have the indexes ?

I tried looking at the British Library India Office website, but cannot seem to figure out how to order a birth certificate from them!

Thank you,

Alan

I have for a long time on a back burner to track down details of my ancestor, Frances Mathew, born 1771 in Edingale, Staffordshire. I believe she was christened there on 24 February 1771. It would be very interesting to have her birth or baptism record.

Of even greater interest would be the birth or baptism of her daughter, Phoebe Mathew(s), born about 1796, possibly in Edingale, possibly in neighbouring Lullington or Coton-in-the-elms.

Phoebe is listed as Phoebe Farnell at her marriage (to Thomas Rochford in 1816), following Frances' marriage to Martin Farnell in Lullington in 1805. However, in his will, Martin clearly indicates Phoebe to be the daughter of his wife, Frances Mathew, from before their marriage. I think that Frances was not married when she had Phoebe, which is why I think her maiden name is Mathew, but I cannot be absolutely sure of this.

I hope this makes sense to anyone who might have the time to do a lookup. I was always hoping to get over to the England and go to the Lichfield record office, but so far haven't been able to, and thought that something might have come on-line by now.

As I don't have any subscription at the moment, I'm wondering if it would be possible for someone to do the following lookup on the 1871 England Census:

Parish: Toxteth Park
Registration district: West Derby
Street: Hemans
Family member last name : Devereaux

I basically wanted to check how many people are living at 18 Hemans street, where my great grand aunt, Elizabeth Devereaux, was supposedly running a lodging house. The census should thus hopefully confirm whether or not this was the case.

Many thanks,

Alan

The Common Room / Birth registration with unmarried mother having married name
« on: Tuesday 30 June 15 09:07 BST (UK)  »
Some time ago, I discovered that my mother's parents did not marry until 1939, just after WW11 broke out. However, my mother's birth certificate lists her mother as if she were married, i.e. with the surname of my mother's father followed by "formerly" and then her own surname or maiden name. My mother was born in 1926 in Liverpool.

My question is how would it have been possible for this to be achieved. Wouldn't they have been required to present a marriage certificate when registering the birth?

Lancashire / Hemans Street, North Toxteth, Liverpool
« on: Tuesday 18 November 14 19:46 GMT (UK)  »
Does anyone know what the houses were like in Hemans Street, North Toxteth, Liverpool? One of my ancestors lived there back in the 1870s and 1880s and I think she ran a lodging house there, but it looks like the whole area has since been demolished and renovated. The nearest I could come is Pomfret street and Thackeret Close, which I assume is at the site of the former Thackeret street, which was next to and parallel to Hemans street according to the map from 1890 to be found at http://historic-liverpool.co.uk/old-maps-of-liverpool.

Many thanks,

Alan

Could anyone give me the exact address at which Elizabeth Devereaux, born Elizabeth Froude about 1830 in Stoke Gabriel, Devonshire, is living in Toxteth Park, Liverpool, on the 1871 census? I have the other details, but failed to note the address when I had access to these records. Thanks, Alan

The Common Room / Destitute in England in the 1860s
« on: Friday 29 August 14 14:55 BST (UK)  »
I have been trying for many years to find out how my great grandmother, Martha Susanna Froude, ended up in the Devon House of Mercy in 1871 when she was 19 years old and lamenting over the fact that there don't seem to be any records from that period for this institution.

Recently, in doing some research for someone else in a totally different area, I suddenly had the inspiration based on certain indications that it might have been because she had become destitute (for want of a better word) in the preceding years, whereas I always thought she was with her sister in Liverpool.

The question which comes to mind then, which I submit here, is where would be the best place (i.e. which possible records) to look for her if she had indeed found herself homeless with nowhere to go during the period between 1864 (when at 12 years old she came out of Muller's orphanage in Bristol) and 1871 when the census shows here to be in the Devon House of Mercy in Bovey Tracey?
