Cambridgeshire / Mary Johnson
« on: Wednesday 23 August 23 12:22 BST (UK)  »
On 26 Feb 1826 Mary Johnson married John Hasel. They had a number of children including Elizabeth 1830 and William 1832.
On 16 May 1839 Mary Hazel married William Hawkins. 14 6. Cambridge.
Her abode Coronation St, occ. Shopkeeper , father Thomas Johnson.

In 1841 William Orpen, Shopkeeper, his wife Mary, son William 1, and two step-children Elizabeth and William Hazell, were living in Histon. note. Wiliam Orpen born 1776 (not 1791)

William Orpen born D Qtr 1839 Vol14 P14 mmn Johnson - GRO. Also ....
William Orpen bpt 19 Jan 1840, of Coronation St. father William, Shopkeeper, mother Mary.

In 1851 Mary's father Thomas Johnson is living with them.

Can anyone see a burial/death for John Hazel and William Hawkins, and a marriage (if there was one) for William Orpen and Mary. And probable father of William Orpen 1839?

Well done and thank you.

I was confused with the family living with him.

As far as I can tell the lady was Mary Leach, not married, and the two children were her children.

She was most likely the housekeeper for Charles and I believe the children were his children.
In 1841 there is a baptism for Lydia Leach, but registered Lydia Lucas 14 44.
In 1843 there is a record , 14 50, for both a " Lucas Leach" and a "Lucas Lucas"

Thanks again

Charles Lucas was born in Dry Drayton, Cambs 1778.

In Histon, 1844 he died and was buried 6 October 1844. A sale, Cambridge Chronicle 28 Sept 1844 has a Garden and Cottage for sale, proprietor Charles Lucas.

Can anyone see Charles in 1841?

Also, his brother Stephen Lucas died 1851. I found an Index to a Death Duty Register with his nephew Samuel Winders as Executor ... Folio No 383.

Can anyone see the Register or Will for Stephen?

Sarah Lucas didn't marry. After Smith Lucas died Sarah Lucas continued to live in the house with her nephew Frederick Mansfield (also didn't marry) until her death in early 1932. ... no details

Frederick died 29 March 1832, age 75 ... details in local records.

In the Saffron Walden August Weekly News 26 August 1932 (Agent Winship) there is a property for sale that matches the description of the property listed in the Land Tax Register of 1911/13. Almost 100 years after the sale record you found in 1838.

I couldn't find any probate or details of Sarah's burial.

Are the details of the prison ship and Smith Lucas in Ancestry? If so, I will go to the library and look them up.

I get worse ... it should be SMITH LUCAS.

and yes it does help, thank you.

Smith died in 1903, age 87.
Interestingly, the 1911 -13 Land Tax Register records  his daughter Sarah owns the property that Smith Lucas and his family lived in for the past 50 or so years.

I found the 1841 census record, thank you, but can't manage to find all the other details?

A newspaper, Cambridge Chronicle, 7 July 1838, reports that Smith Lucas and Frederick Ridgwell (of Histon) were found guilty of stealing corn and I quote " the former sentenced to be transported 7 years, and the latter to one years imprisonment"

Miles Lucas (1814) married Elizabeth Ridgwell in 1834. They had a number of children including Smith in 1838, a gap of 5 years, then Sarah 1843.

In 1841 Elizabeth was living on her own with the children .... and in 1851  Miles was back living with Elizabeth and the children.

Can anyone see what happened to Miles Lucas after the court case?

That looks interesting. I guess he joined the Army when he was 16 and was posted "up North".

After that it's as you suggested. Thank you.

Thanks for looking. I looked in GRO as you suggested ....  William Upchurch Fromant 1887 3b 466.

The 1891 census for Willie Fromant, grandson does look like a six to me, could be a four, but I think you are correct anyway in suggesting that this is William Upchurch Fromant 1887.

Well done. and thank you.

After 1901 is he a Fromant or an Upchurch?

George Upchurch was born in Histon, 6 January 1866, to John and Marianne Upchurch.
In 1891 he married Caroline Fromant daughter of William and Naomi Fromant. They had a daughter,  Florence May 1892. in 1911 the record shows they had just one child.
In 1901 George & Caroline are living in Histon with their daughter Florence (8). Living with them and recorded as their son is a William Upchurch, born Histon 1888, three years before they married.

Can anyone shed some light on William?
