HI
My great Grandparents were at number 2.  I have quite a few pics that show you what it looked like in the 20s.  Quite a few have other children in them who I presume are neighbours.  Some names on the back are May melville, Effie Scott, Mary Murray, Betty Gibson, Celine Dodds, Effie Irvine, Charlotte...
Maybe these names might ring a bell for someone.
I also have my Great Granpa's Freedom of Peebles, all soldiers in the town who came back were awarded this.  They lived at Eshiels till 1940.  My Great Granpa was a market gardener.

Hi
Thanks for the relpy. I thought I'd try again, see if anything came up!  The information about james Spence is interesting, I will go and have a look at Marion's siblings but it must be a relative :)

Hi
Its very interesting, my Great Granpa had one of the Eshiels houses, my Granny was brought up there, can't remember what number they were.  I have a few photos they took there, including a couple with neighbours in them.

Scotland / Sherrif Officer late 1700s
« on: Sunday 19 August 12 10:57 BST (UK)  »
Hi
I have found that on my 3 x Great Granny's death certificate that her father William Spence was a sherrif officer and was looking for some help finding out information about him.  I've tried googling but no luck there.
I'll tell you what info I have.

She was called marion Spence born 1809 in Carnwath, Lanarkshire.  She married Alexander Wilson in 1837 and died 1859.
Her mother was Margeret Brown and her father William Spence. I haven't been able to find marriage banns for them in the OPRs.
I want to find out what being a sherriff officer then would have meant, It might say sherrif's officer though.
Does anyone know what this would have meant and if there might be any records for him somewhere.

Thanks, Caroline

Hi,
Ok, I'm obviously getting myself into a muddle with the generations and names so I will copy out exactly what information I have and then hopefully I will be clearer  :-[

James Archibald Steel married Mary Craig
Children - james b.31 mar 1799 Abbey Paisley Renfrew

               Robert b. Feb 1804
                             married Isabella McNish (b. Feb 1816 Middle Grennock, her parents were Robert Mcnish and Dorothy Mc Taggert)  14 Jul 1843  Paisley
               Robert died 6 may 1856 Johnstone Renfrew.

This was the second marriage of Robert Steele, First marriage is thought to be to a Elizabeth Robertson.  (Still working on this area)
Children - * James
                * Archibald b, 10 Apr 1833 Kilbarchan Renfrew
                * Eliza b Dec 1843 Abbey Paisley
                   Martha b 1848
                   Girl    b.
                    John   b. 1850 Johnstone
                   Isabella   b. 1850 Johnstone
                   Girl

   * 1st marriage and still at home 1851.

I am descended through John who married Annie Thomson in 1872.

I have tried to wtite it out exactly as it is written, so they are not my words.  The information was sent to my granpa in the early 80s from a Cannadian woman, most of the children of john and Annie emigrted to Canada but my great granny was sent back to Scotland after her mother died which is why this branch is Scottish!

I really hope that this matches 'your' Steeles and that it makes sense :))

The family papers have Elizabeth as being the first wife and Isabella as being the second.
