Derry (Londonderry) / John Robinson and Catherine Simpson
« on: Sunday 22 April 18 08:12 BST (UK)  »
Hello,

I’m here again asking for more help with Irish ancestors.

I’m in Scotland, so we have Alan Robinson born 1896 in cambusnethan, Lanarkshire although the family lived in Harthill.

His parents John Robinson and Catherine Simpson were married on the 8th if January 1891 in Dungarven, Ireland.

I’ve tried looking but can’t find their marriage record.  Also, their oldest son William Simpson Robinson wasn’t born in Scotland.  They also have lost a child but I can’t see any record.

Johns death certificate only has a mother recorded, Martha Robinson.
Is anyone able to help with this family, I’m very interested to learn more about them .

Thanks
Caroline

Hi
Thanks you two, very interesting!
I’ll be busy looking at these today.

I have already found the mother’s death certificate in Scotland which is helpful.

Thanks,

I’ve found out quite a bit about the family already!

I hadn’t realised Annie was Martha Ann, exciting to find them in Scotland.  Not too far from us 🙂

Hello,

I am looking for some help and advice please.
This is the first time I have looked at Irish genealogy.  I am Scottish and so I feel like I know what I’m doing with Scottish records but out of my depth with Irish ones!

I have been researching the family history of a friend who was adopted as a baby and know very little about her family apart from her mother and her grandparents names.

The family lived in Shotts in Scotland but all four of her great grandparents were from Ireland.

I’ve got a bit stuck.

This is what I know about one couple.

John Chambers marrried Mary Easdale on July 19th 1861 in Kirkinriola, Antrim (Clough).  I may not have spelled that correctly.

In 1851, according to the 1851 householders index John lived in Ballymoney, Antrim.

Their daughter Annie was born around 1866.

She married John Deans in Illinois in 1890,although they settled in Shotts.

Could anyone help me or show me where to look?

I have three other families to look for so it would be a big help.

Thanks
Caroline

Hi

Thanks for the reply.  Philip was my my Great Great Granndfather.  his daughter mary was my Grandfather's mum.  I have a photo of her.  Philip's other children were Annie, Isabella, Bridget, Thomas and Jane.  I also know that they had four born and die as babies between 1901 and 1911.  We found out at the Scotland's people centre.

It would be good to share information.  We get stuck on Philips dad.  He is named on his birth certificate but then appears to be illigitimate.

We know that his mother was from Ireland.

Kirkgate in Leith seemed to be the family home.

Decided to have a look at the census image on scotlandspeople and see that a daughter Jane Leeigh age 13 was also there so I can see if I can find where she went to. Leigh is spelled Lee but I take it it's a mistake as Lee is the more common version up here.

Hi
Thanks for the replies, you've given me a bit to think about.  On the 1851 census, the brother Joseph's occupation is bottle maker.  Hugh Kinney was an iron moulder.  ALthough he was born in Scotland, I don't think the family had been there very long as his older brother born in Ireland.  Jane (mum) occupation is washerwoman.  She disappears after 1851, I can't find her death so assume she died before 1855.  I also can't find Joseph in 1861 or his death in Scotland so maybe he returned back to England.
I noticed that the lived in Glasshouses row in Warrington and I googled it and it said it was built for the workers at thr Robinson's factory so perhaps a link for Joseph there.  Also, perhaps Hugh was working in Lancashire and met Ann there and brought her up to Glasgow.

I'll keep hunting, Leigh seems to be a common name in the area which doesn't help matters!   ;D

Hi
I've posted on here before about my Lancashire ancesters but I'm still intrigued by them!  I'm still a bit unsure about tracing them on parish records as my ancesters are mostly Scottish and I'm not familiar with the English records.
I have Thomas Leigh and Jane Pincock in Warrington, I've found ten children born berween 1825 and 1838, my ancester being Anne wai Leigh born 1831.
I have them in Glass house row in 1841 with no father and a three month Emma Pendlebury but not sure who she is.
In 1851 Jane is in Glasgow with one son Joseph and Ann and her husband Hugh Kinney and their son.  I can't imagine why they went fom Warrington to Glasgow.  Surely Liverpool or Manchester would have been easier.  Hugh Kinney was born in Scotland although his family were from Ireland.  I was thining maybe they could have been catholics but that wouldn't be a reason to go to Glasgow surely?
I'll probably never know but if anyone has any ideas?
Also if anyone knows where the Wait comes from as that name was passed down to my great granny, Anne Wait Leigh Kinney (1900) and the Anne to me as my middle name!
Thanks very much, Caroline
