Australia / Help to find Florence Russell
« on: Sunday 01 March 15 05:58 GMT (UK)  »
I am trying to find Florence Russell without any success.
She was born in 1884 at Kilmore, Victoria. Daughter of William James Russell and Eliza Jane Biddle (I have the birth certificate.)

She is one of eight children.

I have managed to trace and find quite a bit of information on her parents and siblings, but, she seems to have disappeared.  She was still living in 1926 according to her fathers death certificate, however, she is listed as deceased on her mothers death in 1947.

I,m wondering if she married,  had children, and when she died

I would be very grateful if someone can help.

I have  a   Harriett Figg baptized 22 September 1811 in Selbourne, father Thomas Figg, mother Mary, although only an index, I have completed her family, or so I thought. Harriett married 19 March 1831 in Headley to James Draper, he died and she remarried as Harriett Draper a widow to Thomas Glue 2 September 1844 in Staunton. On this marriage certificate Harriett's father is Thomas Figg. I have her on all census records records 1841 to 1881 and most unusual her age is correct on each one!

However another family member has all the same information as I, but disputes Harrietts birth.  She firmly believes she has the right Harriet from the old parish registers baptized 10 Nov 1816 in Headly, father John Figg, mother Charlotte Harriett Blanchard, to me this doesn't seem to fit with the 5 year age difference.

There are definately 2 Harriett Figgs, one born to John, one born to Thomas I need to know  1.what happened to Harriett born to John and Charlotte, and  2. to find Harrietts father Thomas.

Sussex / Help please, Re Glue
« on: Friday 12 September 14 17:05 BST (UK)  »
I have a Thomas Glue born 1787 in Rogate Sussex. He was widowed in 1840, I can't find him on the 1841 Census which I believe was taken in June, I have searched constantly and am unable to find him here. His 4 youngest children are on this census, John 13, James 11, Mary Ann 9, Edward 6 and Thomasin 4 at Galley Grove Rogate with a Thos Smith and his wife Elizabeth Smith. My thoughts are they are probably in care, but no Thomas!
He remarried in Sep 1841, three months after the census to Harriett Draper, On the 1841 census she was in the Easbourne Workhouse with her 3 young children, her husband died here in 1840. By 1851 census they are together as a family, Thomas has his children back.
So one would have to wonder how he met Harriett! and where he was when the 1841 census was taken. This is a long shot, but, maybe some one can help me find him.

Australia / can someone help me find Arthur
« on: Sunday 22 September 13 11:56 BST (UK)  »
Arthur Claude Church born 17 June 1903 at Gerry Street Carlton. (This could be Berry Street) Mother Listed Lena Church (Helena) father unknown. I have this birth certificate but have not been able to find anything else for Arthur.
The family story is that his mother was in Service for the BEGGS family in the vicinity of St James Victoria, when Arthur was born he was taken in by the BEGGS family, he was born with a disability.
Surely there must be more information for Arthur, I have looked for a death on line for Arthur Church & Arthur Beggs to no avail.
Has anyone got any ideas where I can go from here, any help would be much appreciated.
Cheers Judy

Ireland / Help to find my G.G.Grandmother, Ann Moroney
« on: Friday 04 May 12 05:03 BST (UK)  »
My Great Grandmother is Ann Moroney and I would really like to find out more about her life in Ireland prior to coming to Australia, I am new to Irish history and have no idea where to begin, I'm hoping someone can help.
Ann was born about 1832 in Tipperary (Ballina?)  she came to Australia under the Earl Grey Scheme for The Irish Famine Orphans.
Arrived  in Port Phillip Bay, Victoria on 31 March 1850 on a ship named the Eliza Caroline.
she was 18 years old. She was employed for 6 months in Melbourne by a Mrs Roycroft, her wage was 10pounds.  She moved to Benalla, Victoria and married Gabriel Church in 1850, they had 12 children
Ann died from Typhoid Fever 1898 at St James, Vic and her parents are listed on her death certificate as William Moroney (Farmer) & Bridget Hayes.
I wonder if she was truly a complete orphan or if either parent was still alive, was she in the workhouse as many of these famine orphans were. Are there records for workhouses, or indeed, the reason she was chosen at the time for immigration. Any help or advice would be greatly appreciated, I feel she is incomplete as far as her Irish origins are concerned.

Australia / LESLIE Twins 1911 not registered?
« on: Thursday 08 March 12 10:47 GMT (UK)  »
Twins Jean & Stanley John Leslie, (my father) born 20 October 1911,Bundoora Vic. Youngest children of William Leslie and his 2nd wife Annie Munro. Other children of this marriage were, Clifton 1895, Lindsay 1896, Alexander 1898, Douglas 1901, William 1904.  Children of William's first marriage to Sarah Ellen Edwards are Catherine 1886 & Lillian 1888.
All of the children other than Stanley & Jean were registered.
William's death certificate 2 Jan 1926 names all of the above children except Jean & Stanley.
Annie's death certificate 14 March 1954 names her children to William and includes Jean & Stanley! Interestingly her death notice  makes reference to her beloved step children Lillian & Katie as well as her own.
It seemed odd that all of these children were registered except for the twins.
As a consequence we have come to suspect they were perhaps taken into the family as adopted children. and to our surprise just recently, an elderly cousin  that we haven't seen for about 60 years made contact and told us she believed Jean & Stan were taken into the family at a very young age due to their parents being killed in a tragic accident but more than this she didn't know. We have wondered why twins would be taken into the family when Annie already had 5 children, she was 46 years of age and William was 57. Has any one got any ideas where to go from here, I have traced my Leslie family back to Scotland in the 1700,s and it seems we're not who we thought we were.

Australia / Am I at a dead end?
« on: Monday 30 January 12 10:16 GMT (UK)  »
I have been trying to find my Great Grandfather,  "William James Russell"
The only record I have been able to find is a marriage certificate - 2 may 1877 in Ulverstone, Tasmania, he married Eliza Jane Biddle,  the parents are not listed on this certificate.  William was 23 and Eliza 20.
Three children were born in Tasmania and four in Victoria.
Eliza died 26 May 1947 in Carnegie, Victoria,  her parents, William Biddle & Catherine Gittons are listed on this certificate. It also states she lived 20 years in Tasmania and 70 in Victoria, she was aged 90.
William and Eliza were together on Electoral rolls,  1903 in Healesville, Victoria, 1914 in Collingwood Victoria,   from 1919
 on Eliza was alone.
The family story is that William left home one day and never returned!
I haven't been able to establish who his parents were as I haven't been able to find a death certificate.  Nor have i found their births, maybe they were children of immigrant parents!
Can anyone offer a suggestion
