Ancestral Family Tree DNA Testing / Triangulating and ruling out family lines
« on: Tuesday 29 August 17 10:50 BST (UK)  »
Through using both Ancestry and gedmatch, I have found a person (I shall call them Mrs A) to whom my DNA sample links with (ancestry gives 4 - 6 generations, gedmatch gives 4.8).

We have both searched out trees, but can't find a suitable connecting person (or even name), so acknowledging that there might have been duff research or illegitimacy etc we have looked for others who are shared matches to both of us.  Whilst we try to make contact with those, can I start to rule out family lines where I have a match with someone, but Mrs A doesn't? e.g. Miss B and I have a shared  gt gt gt grandad but Miss B and Mrs A don't show up as a connected (on either Ancestry or gedmatch).

Ouch, this hurts  ::)

The Common Room / Names on back of photo
« on: Friday 18 August 17 13:13 BST (UK)  »
I suspect that I am over thinking this, but here goes!

I have a photo of three gents, standing behind three seated ladies, with another lady seated on the floor in front of the middle seated lady.

Someone has carefully written their names on the back of the photo - so far so good!

My question is - would you a) write the corresponding name on the back of that person's head, or
b) would you write it in the order they appear on the front?

In scenario a, the left hand gent's name would appear 3rd on the back of the photo, but in scenario b it would appear 1st in the list.

Technical Help / Issues with Ancestry.co.uk?
« on: Wednesday 26 July 17 10:38 BST (UK)  »
Not sure whether this is an issue with my computer or with ancestry.co.uk (it was all fine yesterday)?

I load up ancestry.co.uk; first curious thing is that it doesn't recognise who I am - normally on my home computer I stay logged in to things like ancestry and so my user name comes up in the top right corner - not today.

Other curious thing - in the address bar, to the right, there is a symbol that when I hover over it says that the webpage is trying to load unsafe scripts.  Again, this didn't happen yesterday.

Have I managed to inadvertantly changed settings on my computer (although RC and the BBC both seem to run ok)?  Or is this an ancestry thing?

This is a pretty faded photo, but I am hoping that the gate is so distinctive that it will still be possible to recognise.

If anyone's eyesight is that good that they want to try identifying the cars too, then feel free  ;)

This looks to be a pretty grand residence - when I first saw the photo, it reminded me of the entrance to the Bishops Palace in Hereford (well, they both have archways  ::) ) but where is this?

Handwriting Deciphering & Recognition / Where is this? #20 Seaside and pier
« on: Wednesday 22 February 17 14:58 GMT (UK)  »
Does anyone recognise this seaside vista with pier?  I'm guessing south coast (Hastings? Eastbourne?)  but I'm not really familiar with that part of the country.

Norfolk / Missing in 1861 - Henry Reeve
« on: Monday 20 February 17 17:42 GMT (UK)  »
Henry Reeve was born 20 Apr 1838 in Honingham to Robert and Susan(nah) Reeve (nee Kiddle).

On the 1851 census, he is with his mother and sister in Burgh Road, Mattishall
Susan  REEVE   Head   W   31   F   Pauper   Norwich-Nfk
Henry  REEVE   Son   -   12   M   ---   Honingham-Nfk
Jane  REEVE   Daur   -   10   F   ---   East Tuddenham-Nfk

On the 1871 census, he is with his wife and children in Stoke Holy Cross
Stoke Holy Cross
Henry REEVE  33  Miller Journeyman  Honingham
Emily REEVE  31
George REEVE  14  Norwich
Edward REEVE  8  Norwich

He marries his wife, Emily, on 20 Sept 1868 at Heigham, both giving their addresses as Heigham.  Going by dates and ages of children, it seems as if the children were born before their marriage.

If this all sounds familiar, it is because I have asked for help trying to untangle Emily's life before her marriage http://www.rootschat.com/forum/index.php?topic=742598.0

So, in my wish list for anyone who has a magic wand  ;)
1) Where is Henry in 1861?
2) Under what name was Joseph/Edward (bn c. 1862) registered?

I have Susan Reeve on the 1861 census (household of Francis Gunton in Mattishall), but I don't have Jane Reeve after the 1851 census.

Many thanks in advance for any help!

The Common Room / Suicide of great great uncle
« on: Thursday 02 February 17 21:57 GMT (UK)  »
I have just come across a newspaper report of the death of my great great uncle, Leonard William Schmidt, in 1903 (reported 14 March 1903, London Daily News) who was found stabbed in the heart at his butchers shop with a verdict of suicide whilst of unsound mind.  Evidence was given by a Dr Finucane who stated:

deceased consulted him on account of brain trouble.  He complained that the top part of his brain seemed to be asleep.  The brain trouble had increased of later years.  Occasionally he suffered from hallucinations.  A few days ago he visited witness and asked if he could bear a shock, as he had something to communicate.  After begging witness to shut the door, he said "I have been making a profit out of my men for the last 15 years unknowingly and now everything has come out and the shock will kill my wife."

Two queries spring to mind - firstly what sort of mental illness does the above evidence suggest that he might have suffered from, and also where could I find out what/how was he making a profit from?  (the butchers shop was at 12 Strutton Ground, Westminster).

Thank you in advance for any assistance and interest!

Derbyshire Lookup Requests / Eyam/Foolow parish records look up please
« on: Thursday 29 December 16 12:23 GMT (UK)  »
If anyone has access to parish records of Eyam, I would be very grateful for a look up.  My husband's ancestor was Henry Davis bn abt 1784 in Foolow.  He and his brother John (bn abt 1781) moved to Grassington, Yorkshire where they were lead miners and after their death they were commemorated with this rather fabulous story memorial http://www.findagrave.com/cgi-bin/fg.cgi?page=gr&GSln=davis&GSiman=1&GScid=2594708&GRid=159837472&

I would be grateful if anyone does have access to the parish records of Eyam, to let me know if Henry was baptised in Eyam and who his parents were.

Thank you.
