Hello all, I have been sorting out a collection of photos I inherited from my granny, and I came across one which I believe is a wedding/engagement photo of my gt grandparents (taken about 1905).  Unfortunately, it looks like it was originally in a frame with a glass frontage, but that the photo has stuck to the glass on the left hand side.  I would really appreciate any tips on how to conserve this photo and whether it is possible for the glass to be removed, and I would also appreciate any attempts to restore the photo so that the glass and other scratches can no longer be seen!

Many thanks in advance,

The Common Room / Collector of Rents
« on: Thursday 13 November 08 21:12 GMT (UK)  »
A distant rellie put the term 'collector of rents' as his profession on the 1871 census.  Does this mean he is a collector in the sense of going from house to house to collect monies owed (hopefully without the use of a baseball bat  :o) or is his income derived from rents?

Thank you in advance for your answers,

The Common Room / Where to go from here?
« on: Saturday 25 October 08 22:19 BST (UK)  »
Hi all,

I hope you can help me get over this stumbling block - there must be a way, but my addled brain can't see it!

I am trying to trace Sarah Ann CARTER.  All I have is her marriage certificate (June 7th 1902) to John Haynes (parish church of Stokesay, Shropshire).  She is 24, a spinster, gives her place of residence as Aldon (Stokesay) and her father is William CARTER, labourer.  The witnesses to the marriage are William Carter and Fanny Carter.

I have looked on 1881, 1891, and 1901 census for Sarah Carter, father William with Fanny as a member of the family but with no luck, and have looked on freebmd for a likely birth for Sarah - but as I don't know where she was born it is not much use!!

Is there anything else I could try?

Thank you in advance for any suggestions,

Spider

The Common Room / 1850's Prussia
« on: Friday 26 September 08 17:55 BST (UK)  »
I have a relation, Thomas Davis that was living in Prussia during the 1850's. Does anyone have any ideas what a working class yorkshireman might be doing in Prussia around this time?

Thanks in advance for any suggestions.

Shropshire / Newbury, Shropshire
« on: Tuesday 29 May 07 15:26 BST (UK)  »
Hi all,

On the 1851 census, we have found an ancestor giving her place of birth as Newbury, Shropshire.  After rummaging through Genuki, we've found Newbury to be

Quote
"NEWBURY, a coal-field on Titterstone Clee Hill, county Salop, 5 miles E. by N. of Ludlow. It is basin shaped, and is about half a mile in length, consisting of several thin strata of coal, ironstone, and clay, resting on limestone, which are worked at Cornbrook and other places."

Does this sound like a place where someone lives?  Does anyone else have ancestors claiming to be from Newbury, Shrops?

Any other suggestions would be gratefully received!
