Montgomeryshire / Re: Marriage, [ possible] Churchstoke.
« on: Wednesday 30 May 07 21:22 BST (UK)  »
I wonder if this could be your Martha Ann on the 1841 census:

Church Stoke, Montgomeryshire,
The Rock

William Davies       51       Millwright       Bn this county
Anne Davies          45                             Bn this county
Martha Ann Davies  5                             Bn this county
Thos Lewis             18      Ag lab            Bn this county
Sarah Maund          15      F. S.               Bn this county

I've not found any obvious suspects on the 1851 census, although there is a Martha Davies living with, and married to, an Edward Davies.  If you want I can give you that info??

Shropshire / Re: Newbury, Shropshire

I hadn't thought about it perhaps being a mishearing of Shrewsbury.  I did some further investigating today, and wondered whether Newbury could be a mistranslation of Norbury.

Thank you for your reply, all assistance is greatly appreciated.

More avenues to look down at Shrewsbury record centre!!

Shropshire / Newbury, Shropshire
« on: Tuesday 29 May 07 15:26 BST (UK)  »
Hi all,

On the 1851 census, we have found an ancestor giving her place of birth as Newbury, Shropshire.  After rummaging through Genuki, we've found Newbury to be

Quote
"NEWBURY, a coal-field on Titterstone Clee Hill, county Salop, 5 miles E. by N. of Ludlow. It is basin shaped, and is about half a mile in length, consisting of several thin strata of coal, ironstone, and clay, resting on limestone, which are worked at Cornbrook and other places."

Does this sound like a place where someone lives?  Does anyone else have ancestors claiming to be from Newbury, Shrops?

Any other suggestions would be gratefully received!

I did reply, but it seems to have been lost in the ether..........

The short version of the post was that on the 1881 census, Joseph Gunter is entered as having been born "on board the Allenhope" West Indies.

I presume the Allenhope to be a ship, so perhaps there would be a passenger register with addresses etc?

Montgomeryshire / Re: Dolfor Hall
« on: Monday 16 April 07 22:50 BST (UK)  »
'Scuse me for leaping in - I cam across your posts whilst I was research Benjamin Marsden, with whom William Jenkins was staying on the 1861 census.

Have you tried writing to Dolfor Hall?  According to the OS map Dolfor Hall is still in existence and you never know, there may be a whole stack of archive which they have sitting under the stairs!!
