Thank you all so much, no wonder I couldn't find Matilda Philbey on the census as she is listed as Philley. Family lore says there was a daughter called Edna I assume that this is in fact the Ada mentioned. Not sure about the Brighton links at the moment. It's a lot to take in all at once. Mummy is concerned that there doesn't seem to be a trace of Matilda marrying Fenn, he is named on Winifreds b/cert 27/7/1902. 1st Husband Fredererick William Philbey was RN and stationed on HMS Malabar when they married in 1874. Clearly she was widowed by 1901 census, Gran (Winifred ) was born July 1902 doesn't leave long for a marriage. I have found another marriage to either Farley or Russell (FreeBMD) Portsmouth 1902 2b 1076 quarter Dec. I am beginning to condider that Mr William Henry Fenn lent his name to Gran Winnifred, unless there was a quick marriage and divorce/death?

18 Garfield Road is the address on the birth certificate 1901/2, still being used at third marriage

Hello everyone I'm impressed with the responce. OK further info

Children of Winifred (fenn) and Ernest, Patrick, Eva  and my mum. Originally Win and Ern were both from Portsea, moving to Dulwich/Camberwell in South London where all the lids were born. Ernest the elder was in the army boxing team but during WWII was a police sergeant at Deptford London.

Wins mother was Matilda Louisa Smith and her father was Henry Fenn. I have Matilda marrying a Fred Wm Philbey in 1894 (portsea 2b 863) and then either Sidney farley or Wm Russell in 1902 again in Portsea. Problem is that Win was born in July 1902 Fenn on b/cert but no trace of marriage and dates are a bit tight.
