The Common Room / Re: Image on Ancestry

Golly - that's really weird. I've never seen anything like that. I suppose you haven't had a major update to your operating system recently, have you? Or installed some new software?

How many ways of accessing Ancestry do you use? Just the one or e.g. PC + tablet + smartphone etc...

I had to look up endogamy, so your DNA knowledge is clearly in advance of mine! The only indication of marrying within a specific social group that I have is within my mother's side of the family, where tenant dairymen only married within the same group. I couldn't believe how many 1st cousin marriages there were - it's surprising I don't have two heads  ;D Other than that, no.....

Is it all images, larkspur, or only certain ones? I assume you are starting from the search facility ? I'm not sure what you mean by the Detail box so perhaps it's a particular area of the site?

I am following this with great interest - not that I can contribute much - but I can't find my great grandfather either. He's not with his wife, nor with his new lady and their children. I hope you find yours Liliian66!

Pauline - just wondering - what are your thoughts about his mother's maiden name? Do you think he might have used it as an alias?

This is a bit of a sideways look at Richard's question so please ignore it if you like, but I have a couple of DNA matches who match people on both sides of my tree and I'm really puzzled as to why. I suppose someone else in addition to my parents married from each side but I'm not at all sure how common that would be..... any thoughts?

Added: There are no obvious placenames in common between the two sides so my parents weren't from the same town or anything like that and I haven't found any other links so far....

I'm sorry to ask a stupid question. I understood the whole of the posts above (unfortnately with no new suggestions to add) except for the term MRCA. I assume CA is common ancestor but I haven't guessed the other bit...

The Common Room / Re: probatesearch website

I also got a "not found" despite the entry being completely correct as of the printed document from Ancestry and FindMyPast.

However, when I did finally manage to get the page to display on the Probate websote (by searching only on the first couple of letters and paging tediously through the documents) I noticed that their copy has a "folio number" against it, so I wrote off my previous attempt and resubmitted the request quoting the folio number.

Unfortunately, despite many chase-up emails, nothing has so far emerged....

The Common Room / Re: Shocking behaviour on Ancestry

I must admit I was staggered to get a reply from a message I'd sent on Ancestry a couple of weeks back. Not only were they helpful, they thanked me for the input I gave them that they hadn't already got! Unfortunately some of their information had come from a cousin who was, shall we say, a little less assiduous in checking the sources, but we are now working on that area of our common heritage together and it is very rewarding!

Sometime, just sometimes, an Ancestry contact comes good :D

I share completely what others have said about trees though. I occasionally look at trees when they come up on DNA matches but they are rarely of any use at all. If something on there looks like it actually fits (rare!), I just go off and check everything myself before adding anoyone into my (private) tree.
