The Common Room / Re: probatesearch website

This gets more bizarre.

Yesterday I tried a few dummy orders. The ones that didn't need a Folio No. got to the payment stage. The ones that needed one didn't get that far. I got the same contact administrator message. I tried the same ones today and they got to the payment stage.

I was then able to order the Will that I originally attempted to order.

As for receipts. I received an e-mail saying "order receipt". However you have to follow a link which then tells you to download the actual receipt to your device. The mind boggles.

Either someone is having a laugh that's got out of hand or someone's continued employment or sanity should be seriously questioned.
That is very interesting, Eric - thanks for sharing that! I'm glad that you were able to order the will you've been trying to get originally and it encourages me to think I might be able to get the one I tried weeks and weeks back (if I can remember which one it was  ;D )

However, I'm not ordering anything until I get a reply about the one they claim to have delivered and haven't.

I daren't comment on the way this "upgrade" has been handled as I'm sure I would be breaking the site rules on appropriate user behaviour........

I have been unable to order any wills requiring Folio numbers for some time now. If you emails them on hmctswills@ironmountain.co.uk you MAY get a reply but I usually don't.

I ordered some wills a few weeks ago that went into the system fine but have never turned up. One that claimed to have Grant and Will available had the Grant but not the will and they haven't responded to my query about that either.

I'm sorry to be discouraging Eric but I can only wish you luck ::)

The other annoying thing about the Ancestry declared numbers is that the figure given for "4th cousins or closer" actually, on inspection, appears to consist mainly of matches in the category of "4th to 6th cousin" when listed.  ::)
Not sure what you mean on this - the number I get on the main DNA page (i.e. if I click DNA at the top) matches what I then see if I click the Shared DNA filter at the top and then select the '4th cousin or closer' button?

Sorry about the delay in replying to this, @melba_schmelba.

What I meant by my comment was that, if I click the '4th cousin or closer' button, as you say, I do indeed end up with my second and third cousins in there BUT, the majority of the matches listed  (i.e. all the ones below those) are described in their individual headings as "4th to 6th cousins" and I know from the few of these that I can actually identify, that many of them are actually 5th cousins.

I am puzzled as to why, when selecting 4th cousins or closer, the list clearly includes a majority who are certainly more distant than 4th cousin, and even declared by Ancestry to be so...  ???

That's useful to know, Phil - particularly that they will replace them free of charge.

Others will know more than me about the chemical bases into which you spit or whatever, but my understanding is that everything is pretty inert, so they shouldn't go off at all. Many people seem to hang onto these kits for years before using them (especially if they were given as a present).....

Do LivingDNA take uploads, Phil, or is it one of the companies that you have to take an actual test with?

Yes they do, apart from tests with FindMyPast, because they are done through LivingDNA anyway.

https://support.livingdna.com/hc/en-us/articles/360012509652-Uploading-to-Living-DNA-

However, you have to pay £29 for the "recent ancestry upgrade" to get full ethnicity results on uploads from other providers.

To be honest, I only tested with LivingDNA because my Ancestry samples kept failing processing and I was getting really frustrated. The full LivingDNA test gave me my Y-DNA and mt-DNA haplogroups as well as their ethnicity results.

My 4th test with Ancestry was successful, and I've since uploaded that to LivingDNA as well, but obviously didn't pay to upgrade it. There is no noticeable difference in the autosomal matching between the two tests, but the ethnicity result for my Ancestry upload only shows as 100% European and doesn't give my haplogroups. That should change if I gave them another £29 :D

I combined the two tests on GEDmatch though, which was useful.

Thank you Phil. That's very useful information!

Online trees CAN be useful if they include someone you've never encountered before but only as a possible indicator for doing your own research. I find it is a useful starting place to assume that all on-line trees are wrong unless proved otherwise :D May be a wee bit cynical but avoids an awful lot of wasted time and effort....

The Common Room / Re: Is a DNA test really worthwhile ?

my only dilema is whether to send some envelopes my mother licked and sealed in the 60 & 70s to be tested for her DNA or not

Is that a genuine possibility, Guy?
