Australia / Cornelius Hurford
« on: Tuesday 29 March 16 02:02 BST (UK)  »
I am researching for a friend and have found Cornelius was speared to death on the Palmer River.
It was noted as being in NSW but I have found a Palmer River in QLD, and at the time of his death in  1874 and being in the center of a gold rush in Cape York I feel this is the area.

I found there was an inquest but it sounds as though I can only get a copy if I buy the result.
Is there any other way to find it?     Not sure if my friend wants to buy any certs.

Any help appreciated,
Annette

Yes Debra you have the right one.

It took some finding but my family - Sinclairs, had been listed as  "Similar". It shows the 3 names, Robert, Eliza and Mary.
This is on the index of Immigrant Ship's Arrivals 1848-1912.
Thanks again,
Annette

Thankyou to all of you.  The Suez Canal information was most interesting.

Gerry you are amazing!!!!!!

Very interesting statistics.

Ros, I look forward to any info.

I have found a picture of the Ship and she looks pretty good.  Although it would be a painting and hence the nice appearance.

The route back then would have been south of Africa and the poor ships would have been battered.

Unfortunately I have no convict in the family for my grandson, we are oh so ordinary and a 3 month sail was the best I could come up with.

Many thanks,
Annette

Gerry, the ship is The Duke Of Athole which sailed from Glasgow 18.12.1881 and arrived in Moreton Bay 16.3.1882.
Unfortunately I do not know why they came out - not for gold I do not think.

The sad part is my grandson is asking lots of questions for a project and I am feeling very stupid.

The conditions on the ship and the hardships are his query.  With a one year old child I should imagine it was difficult.
Many thanks fore your reply.

Would someone please give me an idea of the conditions on the 3 mast full rigged ship in 1881 taking 3 months to travel to Qld.
I presume there  would have been casualties due to the heat In Dec-Mar. Not sure how many passengers the ships would have carried.
Any help appreciated,
Annette

Hi debra,
I have many photos of William Morgan and family. Do you think we may distinguish a resemblance?
I have one of my grandfather Horace Morgan when he was in prison. What a great family! I will compare the faces.
I still feel until this William in Boston is found I  cannot go forward.
It was my Grandfather who was the informant for William Morgan's death certificate.
