You are welcome.  James' surname seems to fluctuate between Davis and Davies in subsequent census records.  I have been looking for George using variations of both Payne and Davis, but haven't had any success as yet.

Best wishes

Geoff,

Is is possible that James and George's surname was Davis?

I have found this entry in the 1881 census and thought that I would post the details and let you decide whether they are your family or not.

12 Double Row, Sunderland, Durham

James Davis               Head          Married      28             Puddler Iron   born Rotherham, Yorks
Betsy Davis                Wife           Married      28                                  born Northwich, Cheshire
Mary E. Davis             Dau                              7                                  born Manchester
Sarah J. Davis            Dau                              4                                  born Manchester
James Davis               Son                              2                                  born Manchester
Samuel Davis             Son                              4 months                       born Preston, Lancashire

I also found the following marriage, which lead me to wonder whether this is the James you are searching for.

Manchester, England, Marriages and Banns 1754-1930

Parish Church in the Parish of Eccles,
10th August 1873
James Payne Davis        Full Age        Bachelor     Puddler    36 Railway Street, Pendleton

Betsy Evans                  Full Age        Spinster                    9 Harding Street, Pendleton
Father John Evans, Painter.
Witnesses  Samuel Balmer, Mary Evans.

I hope that this information is of some use to you, if I can be of any further assistance, please do not hesitate to ask.

I have also signed up to do this course and am really looking forward to it starting.  Like others I would highly recommend the Richard the third course and also the Hadrian's wall course.  Another course which I would recommend is the Agincourt 1415 course and the course which I am currently doing the Exploring English:  Magna Carta.

Hi,

This may also be the burial of their child.

St. Peter's Church, Leeds

5th October 1828 burial of Mary Eskrett aged 13 months.  Daughter of Robert and Hannah Eskrett.  Abode Crown Point.  Grave number not recorded.

I have found a post here on Rootschat from 2012 which states that burials which took place at St. Mary's church (Mabgate) were recorded in the registers of St. Peter's church so Hannah was probably not re-interred at St. Peter's.  Sorry if I have mislead you.

Hi,

I have found this record of the burial of Hannah Eskrett which I think matches the record you have found.

St. Marys (Mabgate) Leeds

16th December 1832 burial of Hannah Eskrett aged 31 years.  Wife of Robert Eskrett.  Abode York Road. No grave number is given.

Leeds Parish Church (St. Peters)

1838 burial of Hannah Eskrett aged 31 years.  Wife of Robert Eskrett.  Abode York Road.  No grave number is given.  Note in register St. Mary's.

I am wondering whether Hannah was originally buried at St. Mary's in 1832 and then re-interred at St. Peters in 1838.

I hope that this information is of some use to you.
